If you know of any other Mac afficionados named Mark Anbinder, I want to hear about 'em! Otherwise... yeah, that's me. The author called me this morning for a comment. I've also been quoted several times by the New York Post on Macintosh and related topics, and in addition to 13 years of stuff in TidBITS, I've had several pieces published in Macworld. Re: Friday Webcam - 21 years ago
Apparently some Windows browsers, but not others, show the video at half the specified size. If you open the video in QuickTime Player instead of using the web browser, you can then resize it. Anyway, in one of those "Why now?" moments, eCornell's QuickTime Streaming Server went down early this evening. Luckily, I caught my contact by cell phone on his way out of town, and he ran backby mha - Hockey

If you're watching Beeeej, that must be because you're using the wrong URL! It'll probably work, but might as well use the real one. And... Beeeej is probably "streaming" at about 60 mph right now.by mha - Hockey
Re: It's official...RPI-Cornell on TV Saturday - 21 years ago
The ECAC finally got back to Athletics today. They'll permit us to netcast Friday, but not Saturday because of the TV coverage, and again Sunday if there's a third game. Since this is not a Cornell athletic event, but an ECAC tournament event, they're the ones who get to make the decision. Of course, we made it clear that no one who could watch the telecast would be silly enough to watch the netby mha - Hockey
Five all-Ivy slots for Big Red - 21 years ago
Dave LeNeveu is player of the year, and earned unanimous first-team honors on the All-Ivy League men's hockey team. Ryan Vesce and Doug Murray are also on the first team, and Mark McRae gets second-team honors while Stephen Bâby earns an honorable mention.by mha - Hockey
Re: Webcam on for Princeton game? - 21 years ago
Yup, the online audio feed is just the radio feed, digitized. The radio feed is coming back to Ithaca by telephone, using Comrex equipment that does a little digital compression so the sound quality can be better than raw phone audio. It's simple, portable gear, and it can be hooked to any ol' phone line, which almost every college sports facility has. (Exceptions include Hoy Field and Niemand-Roby mha - Hockey

NESN is also available on DISH Network, channel 434. I think it's part of the larger packages, but it may also be on the regional sports package. Unfortunately, NESN is about five seconds behind the radio coverage, so I had to turn the radio off. Bob Norton is no Adam Wodon...by mha - Hockey

Harvard Law has given Dave Winer a fellowship to head up the new "Blogs at Harvard Initiative." "Ultimately it's going to be a basic skill like e-mail or using a word processor. It's going to be like writing, and that's why I'm at a university now." OK, Dave.by mha - Hockey

Grady on Ithaca radio again - 21 years ago
If you've missed hearing Grady Whittenburg's voice on the air in Ithaca this season, you have a chance to hear him this week... in a Binghamton Senators radio commercial on WVBR promoting their upcoming games! For those who don't want to listen all day to hear it, I've gotten Grady's permission to put the commercial online for your listening pleasure...by mha - Hockey

It's not so off topic. The news that Rawlings was to step down broke while we were in Lake Placid. I actually posted the "breaking news" bulletin in 14850 Today from the press room at the 1980 Olympic Arena. A bit better facilities at my disposal to post today's piece.by mha - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Clarkson on TV - 21 years ago
DISH Network and DirecTV often have the regional sports channels that tend to carry these games. I actually added the multi-region Fox Sports package to my DISH Network lineup last fall early in the first game at BU, so I could watch both of those via Fox Sports New England. If the game's on TV, but not on a channel you get, someone with a full-size ("real" satellite dish can often pullby mha - Hockey

That article says the games will be broadcast on "the cable station." I read the thing a few times and couldn't find anything more specific. "Greater Syracuse area" includes us, at least from Time Warner's perspective. Anyone know what channel they're talking about? Will we get it? How to get their attention... - 21 years ago
Got some feedback today from a friend of a friend of a friend who happens to work in fundraising at, of all places, BU. (Never mind who the intervening friends are.) Her attention had been drawn to my letter as posted on eLF, and she had some suggestions to share. * We'll have the biggest impact if a lot of people actually stop donating (whether to Athletics or the University as a whole) or sayby mha - Hockey

Re: As if we didn't already hate CornellPass - 21 years ago
Yep, a phone call is often all it takes. For a small charge, the credit card company will usually just say "OK" and clear the charge from your account, pulling the money back from the merchant. For larger disputed charges, the credit card company will ask you to follow up in writing. If the merchant will cancel the charge, the written follow-up becomes unnecessary. Re: Why I said - 21 years ago
Actually, Graham, Athletics has already been told that I, and others, would help them get netcasting up and running for all four of the sports that are broadcast on the radio. It's no harder to accomplish for four than it is for one. Y'see, I'm the one who first set up audio streaming for a Big Red sports broadcast, back in 1997, when WVBR broadcast the football season. I reinvented WVBR's strby mha - Hockey
Re: Why I said "No" to the Cornell Fund - 21 years ago
Yes, for now, I chose not to, because I'm that disillusioned with the way Athletics is treating alumni. If one person making such a decision and telling the right people about it can focus enough attention that a resolution can eventually be reached, then it was worth it. Remember, I'm one of the paying customers who decided it was worth coming up with $6.95 a month for Cornell SportsPass, andby mha - Hockey
