Lacrosse previews - 15 years ago
Cornell Athletics has posted men's and women's lacrosse previews. Here's a link to the men's version: Not too many surprises. It confirms some of the changes that have been foreshadowed elsewhere: 1. Former short-stick defensive midfielder George Calvert is being converted into an old-school, two-way midfielder (see also quote about shift in midfield philosophy below). 2. Freshman Rob Pby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Lacrosse season approaching - 15 years ago
ithacatNow, if JT can lock up Torin Varn... Sadly, not gonna happen. Reports are that Varn is heading to Hofstra. It's a good match, I think. Best of luck to him and all Ithaca players hoping to play intercollegiate lacrosse.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Also on Fox College Sports Central - 15 years ago
The match is also being carried live by Fox College Sports Central (FCSC), one of the three Fox College Sports regional sports network aggregator channels that are available to some cable and satellite subscribers. Here in Philadelphia, for example, FCSC is available on Comcast's digital sports tier at channel 263.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: (!) - 15 years ago
Here's another reason for liking a post-season tournament that's just hitting me. A shallow, selfish, short-term reason. As a Cornell fan, I like that it starts in 2010, the first year of the post-Seibald/Glynn/Moyer era. That could be a tough, transitional season. To get an NCAA tournament bid, Cornell might need a conference tournament more than any season since Tambroni became head coach.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
(!) - 15 years ago
Holy shit. That's ginormous. It's such a shock I don't even know what to think. Gut reaction good: Increases chances of future tournament bids for Cornell. Increases chances for watching Cornell lacrosse live and on TV. Improves Ivy teams' recruiting pitches. Gut reaction bad: As a card-carrying old-school crankpot, I have always hated conference tournaments. Hated.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: POLES...not polls - 15 years ago
Agreed. There's so much to playing good defense. Quick feet. Understanding space and slides. Consistent technique. Teamwork and listening. Courage (blocking shots). But I do think we should be concerned about the physical thing. Like you say, size isn't all there is to it. It's more about having a physical presence and attitude. Being willing and able to dish out punishment when necessary withby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: POLES...not polls - 15 years ago
That's a good question. It's kind of scary. If you believe the positions listed at the official Cornell Athletics site(not always advisable), here are the players on the current roster who are most likely to play with six-foot sticks. Baker Decker Derkac Feely Gilbert Howe Kamedulski Livadas MacDonald Moyer Weyl No matter how you distribute them among the four available startinby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Historic win over Hahvahd - 15 years ago
A huge win for a very young, up-and-coming team. The rise of the squash program is one of the best emergent sports stories at Cornell -- potentially on a par with the ascent of basketball for rags-to-riches warm-n-fuzziness. Please note all the Philly area guys.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Men's lax to play UVA - 15 years ago
Al DeFlorioBack problems force Gradinger and Dorne to "retire" from lacrosse. Defense takes a real hit. Yes, a big hit indeed. They'll be missed. This team already lacked depth at close defense. I don't know about Dorne's situation, but I understand that Gradinger had been wrestling with chronic problems for years (a plague on Schoellkopf's old artificial turf). The fact that he plby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball Schedule is Released - 15 years ago
This is good stuff. Love all the new Philadelphia opponents, especially the road game at St. Joe's. Adding Atlantic 10 teams seems like a sustainable and convenient way to improve the schedule and increase alumni exposure at the same time.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Schoellkopf Field's new artificial turf [no, not Lehman's 2004 graduation speech] - 15 years ago
Josh '99I dunno. As an accent color (not as a primary color), I don't have a problem with it. Simple test: Imagine the Cornell hockey sweater with black accents. If that seems like a crime to you (and I hope it does), then consider that us geezers felt that same sense of violation of tradition when other Cornell teams adopted jerseys with black accents.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Schoellkopf Field's new artificial turf [no, not Lehman's 2004 graduation speech] - 15 years ago
There are so many reasons to be happy about this FieldTurf installation. Looks much better. Will help recruiting. No friggin' huggy bear. No more feeling like Cornell is being left behind by the competition. One less set of lines as a distraction (field hockey). Nice "C" at the 50 yard line. But I still feel kind of sad every time I look at the pictures. I'll never be comfortable witby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Men's lax to play UVA - 15 years ago
ithacat...and tidbits on SU and an extension for JT. This is unfrigginbelievable. Seriously. I never thought I'd see the day when one of the established southern lacrosse superpowers would dare to play Cornell in a fair, home-and-home series again. My first thought was that this was the first such series since Cornell played Maryland a while back, but a far more knowledgable source said thaby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Lacrosse conferences born - 15 years ago
After years of rumors, a Big East lacrosse conference will be announced this week. The seven member teams will be Georgetown (formerly of the ECAC), Notre Dame (GWLL), Providence (MAAC), Rutgers (ECAC), St. John's (ECAC), Syracuse (ending years of playing as an independent) and Villanova (CAA). Syracuse is expected to continue its annual game with Cornell. To those who care about the overall healby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Cornell vs. OSU Postgame - 16 years ago
That was one of the worst losses in Cornell lacrosse history. One of those epic losses that sometimes signal a paradigm shift in a program. Maybe the best response is a list. CORNELL LACROSSE'S MOST CATASTROPHIC, PORTENTOUS LOSSES (post-Ned, pre-2008) (blowouts only; no close games or expected losses) 6. Lax: NCAA 1st round vs. Ohio State (pre-game) - 16 years ago
Ohio State is loads of fun. Not as entertaining as Albany 2007, but if you dig fast-paced offense and aggressive defense, then the Buckeyes are the team to watch in this year's tournament. It's a shame that Great Western Lacrosse League teams aren't on TV more. With three GWLL teams in the NCAA tournament and all eight of this weekend's first-round games on ESPNU, at least they'll get a brief momby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Lacrosse bracketology - 16 years ago
Duke got a terrible draw. As a reward for earning the top seed, they get a pretty dangerous Loyola team in the first round. If they win, they get the longest road trip of any seeded team to their quarterfinal venue, where (if the seeded teams hold serve) they'll play the No. 8 seed at the lower seed's home stadium.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports

Re: Hobart Trustees - Lacrosse STAYS AT DIV 1 - 16 years ago
I forgot to add this to the long list of intangible factors favoring Hobart: The Hobart players may have some extra juice because they think they're playing their last game under Coach Matt Kerwick, who is rumored to be on his way out after the season.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Hobart Trustees - Lacrosse STAYS AT DIV 1 - 16 years ago
Josh '99RichHCongrats to the Hobart Lax community. Very glad to have you staying. Now please roll over for us tonight. Hard to imagine that happening. The stars and planets seem to be aligning for Hobart. They're playing the first-ever night game at their infamous traditional home venue, Boswell Field, after years of playing home games at their smaller and more sterile turf facility. Anyone able to record this game? - 16 years ago
Lots to talk about with this game, but first things first: Anyone here with good connections who can arrange to move Passover? I'm pissed that the game time was moved to the late afternoon (4 p.m.); there's no chance I can go to Princeton or watch it live on television. On top of that, I don't get ESPNU, so I can't record it. Given that Passover isn't likely to up and move, I'm hoping thatby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: The Swami is a ... - 16 years ago
No need to get bent out of shape about this or anything else the Swami writes. In this case, the whole ambulance-chasing lawyer thing is part of a long-running joke/tease bit between Swami and Ivyman, a Cornell alumnus. Re: [Lax] Cornell 13 @ Penn 5 (Final) - 16 years ago
What a great day. All the sloppy play in the second half couldn't ruin my post-buttkicking buzz. Other than beating Harvard in hockey, is there anything more satisfying than throttling Penn at La Franklestra for the Cornell fan? So many horrible things have happened to Cornell football, lacrosse and basketball on 33rd Street over the years. It also was a pleasure to finally meet Fred and thby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports

Follow-up question for people who understand the New York City cable television habitat: I'll be in New York this weekend. Is CN8 available on most Manhattan cable systems? Or maybe the better question to ask is: Is New York a Comcast town?by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: [LAX] Cornell-Harvard at Gillette Stadium - 16 years ago
Harvard's program has a lot of Cornell connections. I knew about Tillman, but I didn't know that Harvard captain Scholl was a Cornell legacy until I read this morning's piece in the Crimson: Wish I could be there.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports

DeltaOne81Btw, anyone want to give me a low down on parking near Franklin Field? And directions from the NYC area (NJTurnpike to 295 to 76 over the Walt Wittman to South Street is basically what Google says)? I could get there on my own, but if there's any inside tips to know - esp about parking - I'd appreciate it. I would trust Jeff Hopkins on the driving tips.
