Re: Cornell Basketball Recruiting War - 16 years ago
I hear you, CF. I was only responding to someone higher up who made a comment about Rutgers and academics. Being a Temple guy now, I've become kind of sensitive to that stuff. Maybe oversensitive.by Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Basketball Recruiting War - 16 years ago
I have a big problem with the assumption that choosing Rutgers (or almost any other school) over Cornell implies that a prospective student doesn't value academics. There are many reasons why a student -- recruited athlete or not -- might make that choice. Rutgers has several departments and programs that are superior to Cornell's equivalents (or that Cornell lacks entirely). The student bodyby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports

Al DeFlorioI know it's still early in the season, but I never expected to see this: Holy crap, that's amazing. Thanks, Al. It's great to see how many of Cornell's past and future opponents are doing well in the ratings percentage index. There will be big changes in the coming weeks, for sure, but for now Syracuse seems entrenched in the 1-5 zone, Army and Navy are in the 6-10 zone, and somehowby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: The Remaining Schedule - 16 years ago
DeltaOne81The offense definitely lost it for about half the game on Saturday. Question though, did Yale change their defense after going down 4-0? Did they just execute better? Or was it more an issue of our guys pressing irresponsibly and making stupid mistakes? I'm not enough of a lax expert to notice a defensive shift in strategy, so to me it looked like we were making rash plays, but they couby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: The Remaining Schedule - 16 years ago
TimVI think Syracuse will do better than implied here - an OT loss to UVa is not bad. The question is if we have a prayer to get a Quality win at Orange expense. The way the D looked against UNC I'd say "Not a prayer" but if that can firm up, maybe. I'm anticipating that Navy will have a strong year, so that's one that's in the bag already. Army will be a big test this Sat. Dude, thby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports
Re: Cornell on TV and away internet games, redone 2/23 - 16 years ago
sah67CN8 will pick up the championship game on 3/22 for those of you on Comcast. Just to clarify, there are several versions of CN8 -- including one in New England, one in the Philadelphia area, another in the DC area. Many times they'll have completely different sports programming. However, this time it appears that most (all?) versions of CN8 are set to televise the ECAC championship liveby Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Re: Tipoff Time? - 16 years ago
BeeeejOkay, that all makes sense. But then why does CBS Sportsline list it at 4:40 and CSTV at 5? Rita's right. I'm sure the reason that CBS Sportsline is alone in listing the tip-off time as 4:40 p.m. is because they want you to tune in to the broadcast early enough to catch wall-to-wall between-game advertising interrupted by wee snippets of highlights -- a broadcast which, of course, is oby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports

Re: [Lax] Cornell many vs. Denver few @ Dallas, Texas - 16 years ago
Denver has been a big disappointment this season. Lots of folks, me included, had picked 'em to finish in the lower reaches of the top 10 or 12. It's a shame, because this win likely won't help Cornell's at-large-bid argument much. Cornell's offense is built to exploit teams like Denver that extend their defense. It also helped that Denver's defenders tried all kinds of bullshit high-risk sticby Hillel Hoffmann - Other Sports

Syracuse came back to beat Georgetown yesterday at the Dome. Nice to see a future Cornell opponent win a big game for a change. A few observers on various message boards have noted Syracuse midfielder Brendan Loftus' breakout four-goal performance against the Hoyas. Interesting lax-on-tv note: Saturday's Virginia at Princeton game will be televised live on ESPN at noon. Yes, that's right: the Mother Ship, not the the Deuce or the Yooce. I think it's the first live ESPN broadcast of a regular season college lacrosse game, but I might be wrong. Jim HylaI'd like to think that we're similar to West Genny, but to misquote a famous saying, "I know West Genny and Cornell, you're not yet West Genny". I hope that you're right and that's the path we're on, but to me the closest college analogy to them was the Syracuse teams of the prior 25 years. Recruit, reload, repeat. I hope we get there. Call it the Stickcheck Heard 'Round the World. With less than a minute left in overtime in last year's NCAA quarterfinal, Albany goalie Brett Queener bolted from his cage to scoop a ground ball. Two passes later, the rock ended up in the crosse of Albany defensive midfielder Tyler Endres with nothing but 50 yards of FieldTurf between him and the Cornell crease. ithacatThe US HS A-As list is out and it looks like a down year for Cornell recruiting. If there ever was an illustration of how exhausting faceoffs are, it was watching John Glynn trying to get off the field after each fourth quarter faceoff in the semifinal. What a heroic, selfless effort. Cornell's roster, like most college rosters, is loaded with guys who were great faceoff men in high school: Schmicker, Kirwan, Seibald, Glynn, Boykin.
