Re: 1983 Harvard game question - 19 years ago
All of that is more or less correct (although for confirmation, you should check Greg Berge's fabulous TBRW Web site for a box score ... I bet it will posted here in minutes). The only bit that's off is the bare head. Schafer did indeed break his stick over his head during pre-game introductions, but he was wearing his helmet. Praise for Iggulden - 19 years ago
I just returned from Princeton. Every time I see this cohort of Cornell players, I leave with the same feeling: After more than three decades of following Cornell hockey, I have never seen one player improve more over the course of a college career than Mike Iggulden. The guy I remember as an awkward, unpoised, indecisive underclassman is now (arguably) one of the most valuable players on a teamby Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Cornell-Clarkson highlights available at cstv page - 19 years ago
A video highlights package of the Clarkson-Cornell game is now up at CSTV's Web site. Go to collegesports.com, click on "VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS," and then find "Cornell Rolls at Home." Nice.by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Philadelphia? - 19 years ago
Anyone have suggestions for Philadelphia-area viewers? I won't be able to get myself in front of a TV until the third period, but I'm still eager to find a place. I know that the Cornell Club of Greater Philadelphia isn't running an event, and the Clarkson alumni folks just cancelled a Philly-area gathering.by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey

CSTV - 19 years ago
I'm in complete agreement with Ivyman. Sure, the fact that Cornell lacrosse is not gonna be on CSTV in 2005 is irritating. But any serious lacrosse fan would acknowledge that the Dartmouth-Princeton women's game has had -- and likely will have -- national implications that exceed those of the Cornell-Princeton men's game. Nor do I have a problem with them choosing to broadcast the LeMoyne-Adelphiby Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey

Re: Everblades on TV - 19 years ago
Yes, when Comcast offers CSTV, it's only available as a pricey add-on. (The same is true for DirecTV customers, who have to pay a lot extra for the "sports pack" in order to get CSTV.) Although that's irritating, it's not what really pisses me off. My reason du jour for hating Comcast is that in many parts of the country where Comcast has service -- including Philadelphia, the company'sby Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Re: Everblades on TV - 19 years ago
The irony is that while a handful of select CSTV games are available ex post facto on Comcast's "On Demand" service in Philly, CSTV is NOT available as a channel to Comcast's Philadelphia customers (even though it's available to millions of Comcast customers in other regions). I hate Comcast. And now they're gonna build that fugly skyscraper in Center City.by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey

I believe the provenance for Cornell's base version of the post-goal "sieve, sieve, sieve" taunt also traces back to Wisconsin fans ... perhaps at the '72 Final Four? I think it's safe to say that Wisconsin's fans are the Typhoid Maries for much of what NCAA hockey followers consider standard crowd-participation behavior.by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey

The 1978 Penn transfer windfall - 19 years ago
I was glad to see that the uscho.com piece on the demise of Penn hockey mentioned Cornell's 1978 transfer windfall. Those four Penn refugees -- Whitehead, Roeszler, Berk, and Strawman -- ended up playing major roles in a transitional period for the program. Whitehead, an excellent forward, was the only upperclassman in the bunch, so he only played a season. Roeszler, Berk, and Strawman cameby Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Update: Penn came back - 19 years ago
I wish 'twas so, Al. Pennsylvania got a late touchdown to win it. Their streak is alive. Edit: We just moved to Philadelphia. Gonna have to get used to this. Gag me. Penn's new turf field is nice. Looking forward to lax Final Fours here. ***by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey

Oops. Did I really write "Tom"? That's Mark Allen, of course, CU HOF QB who was younger than Big Ed but may have overlapped some. Same helmets, no icky lump (as I recall).by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Re: New uniforms - 19 years ago
Yes, those Tom-Allen-period uniforms were the best ever, and I don't it's just because of happy associations. I especially dug the helmet with the vertically compressed C. In general, I like simple too. But I gotta admit that some of the quirky excess of traditional Ivy opponents' uniforms gives me the warm-n-fuzzies too, like those goofy stripes on Princeton's sleeves (and Penn's too, once upby Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
New uniforms - 19 years ago
Excellent new uniforms. Their retro-badassness (minimal decoration, over-the-shoulder stripes, monochrome white pants) is enhanced by the black shoes thang. Glad they didn't mess with the helmets. I don't think this particular old-school look is a faithful recreation of any real Cornell look from the past, but I like anyway.by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey
Re: Schedule update: Army replaces Stony Brook? - 19 years ago
A quick update on the 2005 Cornell lacrosse schedule: The conflict on March 12 that was reported earlier appears to have been resolved. According to the Cornell Athletics website, Cornell will be playing the US Military Academy that afternoon at West Point, NY. A game against Stony Brook no longer appears on the schedule. Oops - 19 years ago
After taking a closer look at the schedule, I see that I missed something important: There is indeed a new opponent on the schedule: Notre Dame. The Irish come to Schoellkopf to open the season. Not a bad addition, but certainly not an adequate replacement for Georgetown, either from a strength-of-schedule or recruiting perspective. Don't know how I missed that.by Hillel Hoffmann - Hockey

The Cornell men's lacrosse 2005 schedule has been released. You can see it at the official Cornell Athletics website. (Sorry, I don't know how to post it here without makin' it fugly.) Only 12 games, after 14 were scheduled last year. No February games--the regular season starts a week later in 2005. Hofstra and Georgetown are gone, as expected.
