Cornell-Ohio State pregame - 19 years ago
Seeing all the penalties called in the Friday NCAA first round games has a lot of people wondering how that will impact Cornell. That and the ice surface raise questions. - Cornell is big and physical. - Cornell is disciplined. This part doesn't get considered a lot outside Ithaca. - The 200x100 big sheet of ice could be problematic for Cornell if the defense is used to having its waby billhoward - Hockey
Re: BC vs. Mercyhurst Game Thread - Kudos to which goalie? - 19 years ago
Announcers made reference to the Colorado College - Colgate game and one point noted how Colgate may well have the best goalie in the nation. At another point they noted how Colgate has a lot to prove because they won the ECAC championship last year but didn't get to the NCAAs. That must be the Clarkson-favorite championship: regular season.by billhoward - Hockey
Re: OT: Cornell-UNC Lax - 19 years ago
If UNC appears better than No. 19, Cornell appears a more variable team than its No. 10 ranking would indicate. Or is this another year when Cornell finishes well but can't make up for early season miscues? We saw No. 16 Rutgers play last weekend vs. No. 7 Army and even though the score was close, Army by 8-6, there was an immense difference in poise, passing ability, and resistance to dumb miby billhoward - Hockey

Reminding the other team of our superior SAT scores may have a rebound effect. The opponent may decide the last act of retribution possible, before having to work for the likes of Cornell and Harvard grads, is to kick the living snot out of the Ivy Leaguers on the ice.by billhoward - Hockey

Golden Topher is good, very good. Neutral Ice My Ass is good to but to what end - if we're winning it doesn't matter, if we're losing it's sour grapes, and do we know if the rink guardians think more along the lines of not Carlin's Seven but Twenty-One dirty words that get the sign kicked out? Re: Ticket question (no woofing intended) - 19 years ago
Too bad the NCAA doesn't authorize a ticket re-sale program through its auspices. Say a ticket goes for $50, the NCAA buys it back (on consignment) for $35 and resells it for $50. Since most arenas have bar-code scans of tickets, you wouldn't need to have the original ticket in hand, just a printout with the barcode. Re: 2005 Florida College Classic - revive MSG Tournament? - 19 years ago
A holiday tournament in Lake Placid is one of those ideas that's brilliant on paper. There is the wee small problem of the town and environs being booked solid during the holiday week and if you can get a room, the hotel may demand a one-week stay. All those rooms for competitors at the 1980 Olympics - they're gone now or turned into prisons. If the Everblades Classic ever goes bust - and leby billhoward - Hockey
Re: 2005 Florida College Classic - 19 years ago
In addition to wanting regional representation, the tournament also wanted schools with big alumni populations who also had big now-living-in-Florida populations. That made the December 2003 tournament great with Ohio State and Notre Dame along with Cornell and Maine. For the players themselves, the tournament is not a week on the beach. The first time it was funny. By the third time it was sad. Assuming it was not a psych-out-the-opponents stunt (Mike Schafer's cracking a pre-sawn stick over his head), he's got some real serious issues to deal with. Conventional Wisdom says Cornell's defense will be hurt by the Olympic surface. OTOH, we are pretty darn good moving the puck around on PP so maybe we'll run (T)OSU ragged trying to catch Topher and Matt. In any one game, 25% PP vs 22% PP effectiveness isn't as meaningful as say 80% vs. 70% free throw shooting. Interesting concept. And the following two years the NCAA first round has sites in Albany and then in Rochester. That's when it would really be worth - assuming we were not a high enough #1 seed - offering to drop down to a the second band of seeds (4-6-7-8) if it allowed us to stay in the region, if such an option were to exist.
