Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: RPI/Union - 22 years ago
I hate the capital district. That is all. Ok, seriously - Cornell has always (well, maybe that's extreme, but at least since I've been here) had trouble with the capital district trip. Something about Achilles, and we all know about RPI and the associated unpredictability. I'm hoping that Cornell can get two wins, but I think a split is far more likely, and a 0 or 1 point weekend is certaby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
RichS - I recently said this to one of the Cornell posters on this board regarding Clarkson hockey, and now I'm going to say it to you. Don't stereotype. Just because there's one idiot who decided to throw an empty plastic bottle at Coach Morris, and one or two idiots who have thrown bottles in the past, does NOT mean that Cornell's fans as a whole are classless, nor does it mean that such beby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
Well, I wasn't on top of the McMeekin play, so I'm not sure exactly what went on. From where I was sitting, it looked like McMeekin was hooked, held, and then bodyslammed. If he hit Schwan first, or last, or in the middle, then sure he deserved a penalty, but there was no way to see it at that distance. You were in a better position to see the play than I was, if you were in section O (I guessby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
There's nothing wrong with having a healthy respect for the alma mater, but I think there's also nothing wrong with some friendly heckling that involves a school's alma mater. Playing over it - bad. Having an entire student section turn its back to the band - bad. Lighters? That's kinda funny, actually. Maybe I'm just a jerk.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
You know, I was wondering about that. Having a lighter on for all 6 verses of the Alma Mater must not be too pleasant. If nothing else, maybe they melted the top of the lighter.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: USA vs. Canada Gold Medal Game (SPOILERS) - 22 years ago
What a game! I think Richter actually got his stick on the Lemieux missed opportunity and deflected it wide and high. At least that's the way the replay of the goal looked, although it wasn't the best angle. It didn't matter anyway, Canada still won. Kudos to Canada on a game well played. It was nice to see all the emotion on the Canadian team when time expired. I thought Brodeur was goingby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
Here we go again. . . Al, Rich, stop it. Seriously. Or should we resurrect the sandbox thread? As for the lighters - it's something of a tradition. Cornell plays the Alma Mater, the Clarkson band stands and waves lighters. They've done it for several years now, and as evidenced by the fact that several Clarkson bandies applauded politely when it was done it's nothing more than good-natured rby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
And the classless Clarkson band, how dare they applaud politely after our Alma Mater! Oh, wait. . . Don't stereotype. I highly doubt that the Clarkson hockey program, as a whole, would condone intentionally firing a puck at an opposing coach.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Game DQ for Palahicky - 22 years ago
Morris (I think it was Morris) went over to talk to Kotyra after the game, and a plastic watter bottle sailed over the glass and landed at his feet. Classless buffoonery on the part of one individual, I'd say. I think the game DQs were based on a strict interpretation of the rules. Three players clearly threw punches, all three (not necessarily the *same* three, I guess - I didn't catch the nuby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
Poapst is a bit dirty. Last year he cost Clarkson the game with two or three penalties in the same period (I believe it was the third, too). The fight cost Clarkson Poapst and O'Flaherty, while Cornell lost a *very* angry Shane Palahicky. I saw O'Flaherty and Cook trading slashes. O'Flaherty got Cook behind the knee on one, but it wasn't a vicious cut - Cook turned around and whacked him on thby tml5 - Hockey

Re: CHAMPIONS! - 22 years ago
Only 15 out of 40 top seeds have won the ECAC tourney (provided I can count, which I can't), but I think the numbers from before the final five format won't matter as much, due to the various flaws in the final five system that stack the deck in favor of the top seed. Since the final five was instituted, 2 out of 4 #1 seeds have won the ECAC title. However, 3 of 4 #1 seeds at Placid have gone oby tml5 - Hockey
Re: US-Canada Women's Final (spoilers) - 22 years ago
Actually, Age, if you watched the ECAC women you'd feel even worse. The head ref in that game is/was an ECAC official. Presumably she's the best and/or most experienced that the league has to offer. I've seen mixed reviews on the officiating, although I wasn't able to see the game (grrrr). I heard it was *very* physical, even for the Olympic teams, so that might have something to do with theby tml5 - Hockey

Melissa, for a second there I thought you were talking about the Japanese place on Dryden, which isn't particularly good (it's about as good as Kayuga, for what that's worth) and is certainly not cheap (although it's marginally cheaper than Kayuga). Suffice it to say that I was *very* confused. . .by tml5 - Hockey
Re: v-neck sweater guy - 22 years ago
What about red-headed stepchild? If it makes you feel any better, UAH got beaten like a red-headed stepchild at the start of the season. What makes me feel bad is that the Chargers got swept by Air Force last weekend, which definitely hurts Cornell's chances of adding those two wins to the TUC comparison.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: v-neck sweater guy - 22 years ago
Hey, Cornell *did* get beaten like a rented mule! 6-3, SLU, and I think Graham's right about Burt getting yanked after 1. The game probably wasn't quite as close as the score, although I do remember Cornell staging something of a comeback. Heck, last season 3 goals was a veritable offensive explosion. The 3-2 game was at Appleton. All score information stolen from TBRW? and reprinted withoby tml5 - Hockey

I thought he was funny more than anything, actually, and it's fun to see someone (a la Supermom) be vocal and take on an entire rink full of people by him/herself. Of course, the student sections found him to be a royal pain in the neck, but that might be due to the fact that SLU beat Cornell like a rented mule that night. Re: Everything But Anchovies - 22 years ago
I'm not sure if they still have the mini-bowling game, but since I usually go there after a tournament I'm more interested in the food. Good cheap fare, and lots of it, plus a *fantastic* view of the lake. And yes, the Pines is on 89. Look for the "legal beverages" sign, and be warned - the bridge is (was?) under construction so the parking entrance is a bit weird.by tml5 - Hockey

Note to vegetarians (since Ithaca breeds such folks) - apparently Purity contains gelatin. It's not a big deal for me, but it matters to a lot of people around these parts.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Everything But Anchovies - 22 years ago
I hate to say this, but I think being so close to Binghamton and Syracuse (aka Binghamton North) counts as two strikes against Ithaca. . . Bistro Q is good. The food was fantastic the one time I went there, and we tried a whole bunch of stuff from the menu. I remember it being more than $8-14, but I think we managed to average more than one entree per person, too. Neat design on the psuedo-by tml5 - Hockey

the moderately better stats at Lynah during the regular season balance the moderately worse stats at Lynah during the playoffs Careful, you're counting those PS games twice. I know it seems like he played at Harvard forever, but in 4 years he can only play 4 RS games at Lynah, not 8. So you can't "average" his PS stats with the @Lynah stats posted above, since the @Lynah stats must iby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Perspective - 22 years ago
It seems to me that Murray has been getting progressively slower since his freshman year. However, it may be that the team is getting faster around him, or that he's a little bit hurt, or that he's pinching deeper and has more ground to make up, or I could be just crazy. So, basically, I have no idea - although I do think he has been pinching much more, and much further, than he used to.by tml5 - Hockey

Watching Cornell hockey (men's and women's, at least for me) ranks closely behind Ultimate and road-tripping to see concerts as one of the defining experiences I've had in college (and grad school). Oh, right, there were those pesky classes and shaping my academic future and becoming a well-rounded person and all of that, too. ) Enjoy college, Eric!by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Vermont, Feb 16 - 22 years ago
I think they were upset with losing the Dartmouth game. Based on the huge lead in the first it sounds like the team didn't let it get them down. Losing can do two things: provide motivation or break a team's spirit. I doubt that Cornell, ranked in the top 10, would be broken by a single loss, so I suspect the team as a whole was dejected over the loss and will be super-motivated down the streby tml5 - Hockey
Re: PWR Today, 2-17-02 - 22 years ago
Eric - A few years ago, before the MAAC autobid, there was an automatic berth to the NCAA's for the RS *and* the Tourney champions in the ECAC. If a team should win both the regular season and the tournament titles, that team would receive a first round bye in the NCAA tournament. Now, there are 5 autobids for 12 spots. So instead of giving 2 to each conference, the NCAA only gives one automby tml5 - Hockey
