Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Hahvahd vs. Maine - 22 years ago
Age writes: If I hear someone use the words play, paper, and ice in a sentence again I'm going to go postal. I think that if Cornell plays UNH, the game should be decided by having the team captains and coaches play rock-paper-scissors at center ice. Sorry Age, I couldn't resist.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Help! Directions FROM Placid TO NJ/PA - 22 years ago
JY3, that's not so bad, but traffic is more likely up there, and the Turnpike is probably still faster to PA. 206 is awful and not really on the way, and Edison is where all the nutcases hang out (no offense if that's where you're actually from). If I took 287 I'd probably take Easton ave to Cedar Grove and backroads to my house, which also is a bit out of the way (unless I'm going from Ithaca)by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Help! Directions FROM Placid TO NJ/PA - 22 years ago
Thanks for the help guys! Strictly speaking, I'm not going to New Brunswick. I'd be going to Kendall Park (if I go home before heading to my Grandmother's house), so 287 isn't *such* a great option. However, if someone is going to New Brunswick or Princeton and needs a ride I'd consider that to be "on my way" since I can take Route 1 (as Neil pointed out) down to 95 - Sunday afteby tml5 - Hockey
Help! Directions FROM Placid TO NJ/PA - 22 years ago
So, I'm going to one of two places: Either West Chester, PA, or Kendall Park (near Rutgers and Princeton) NJ (partly depending on what ungodly hour of the morning I motivate to leave on Sunday). The mapquest directions indicate that getting to West Chester involves going through NJ anyway. Does anyone wish to refute this information? Also, I'm looking for the best route to NJ from LP. Re: ECAC picks Grady - 22 years ago
Not only is it cold and windy in winter, but winter is pretty freakin long, too. And not *all* great schools are built on hills. From what I understand Ann Arbor is pretty much flat. I've never been there, and I'm going on the word of a Cornell alum, so maybe it's just flat compared to Cornell.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Poll on Arthur - 22 years ago
But that's a time-honored comedy central tradition, isn't it? Cut to commercial mid-scene for no apparent reason, then fail to put a commercial in at the original break point. Even so, I love comedy central, although I wish they'd kept the rights to MST3K.by tml5 - Hockey
Moy/Blaeser this week - 22 years ago
FWIW, they weighed in on the fast/slow question: Fact or fiction: The Big Red are slow. Fact or fiction: The Big Red will have trouble on the Olympic ice sheet because they are slow. Fact or fiction: Someone is making this all up The first two are fiction, the last is fact. And that's a fact. Left coast types can discuss. I'm going to bed.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: The Big Sheet - 22 years ago
Bâby is not really a hitter. As someone pointed out on the USCHO boards, he's a playmaker. He's big, he sees the ice very well, he has decent hands for someone his size, and as you would expect from someone with good ice sense he stays in position. Not a great skater, not a big hitter, but a top quality defensive forward nonetheless. McMeekin has just been amazing all year. Murray mighby tml5 - Hockey
Re: The Big Sheet - 22 years ago
Damn. I knew there was a drawback somewhere. Stupid charging penalties. . . But hey, there's still less of a chance of a Game DQ for hitting from behind. . . that's gotta count for something, right?by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Directions to LP - 22 years ago
Thanks so much Jim! I was just about to post a request for the best (i.e. not exactly the mapquest) directions from Ithaca.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Biting Sun Article - 22 years ago
I think it's partly dramatic license, but it might have been spurred by a recent article about changing admissions practices for athletes. I can't find the article now, but I believe it came from Harvard and talked about a motion at a meeting of Ivy League presidents (or something) to admit fewer athletes and/or give less consideration to athletic performance as an admissions factor. The link tby tml5 - Hockey
Re: The Big Sheet - 22 years ago
Cornell is faster this year than last, and last year was faster than the year before that. The thing about Cornell is that the skaters are in good position and don't have as far to go, so you don't see so much of the wild power skating. Also, big people look slower than they really are, and fast people look smaller than they really are. Figure that one out, and why it's important, and you'll bby tml5 - Hockey
Re: More new recruits (2003) - 22 years ago
Hornby's got some pretty good scoring moves, but I definitely see your point, Age. Opposing teams probably don't fear #16 for his scoring touch. . .by tml5 - Hockey
Re: More new recruits (2003) - 22 years ago
I can hear the Lethal Weapon chants already. . . Of course, they'd make more sense if the guy was actually a sniper. . . maybe he'll start scoring in bunches in college. OTOH, making sense was never a prerequisite for a chant.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell presence at Thursday's game - 22 years ago
I agree that RPI is just as dangerous, if not moreso, than Dartmouth. I think Cornell matches up a little bit better with RPI in terms of skaters, but Marsters is generally better than anyone Dartmouth has in net. Of course, if Dartmouth wins the PIG and Gaudet goes with Boucher, all bets are off - it'll either be impossible to score or Boucher will give up 2 soft goals early and get yanked. Hby tml5 - Hockey
Re: LP weather - 22 years ago
According to weather.com, it's been just as wacky as Ithaca, but consistently colder. Since Ithaca was 20s yesterday and 30s today, that puts Placid at teens yesterday and 20s today (or thereabouts). Weather.com says that it's going to warm up and then get cold again, but what the heck do they know? Wear lots of layers. That way, if it's cold you'll be warm, and if it's warm you can easilyby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Teams Under Consideration - 22 years ago
That's exactly my point. As long as Cornell wins, who really cares? Bring on Denver! But only if Cornell wins. . .by tml5 - Hockey
Re: PWR after Saturday - 22 years ago
Cornell-Harvard would be nice, but only if Cornell wins and Niagara takes the CHA tournament. If *everything* goes right (including an ECAC title) Cornell could sneak into the top 4 in the PWR, although I doubt it'd result in a bye. One of the things involved in that "everything" is that Cornell beats 2 TUCs at Placid (not Harvard), and/or if Niagara finshes as a TUC. Maybe Harvardby tml5 - Hockey
Re: PWR after Saturday - 22 years ago
I don't think UAH can help Cornell. If Huntsville wins the CHA tourney, then that's nice and all, but since there's no CHA auto-bid to the NCAAs the TUC status of UAH does not change. Only teams that finish at or above .500, or receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney, qualify as TUCs for the selection criteria. At least, that's what I've always been led to believe. If this was next seasoby tml5 - Hockey

Are you insinuating that the poll has been rigged?!?! What is this world coming to?!?!?!by tml5 - Hockey
Poll on Arthur - 22 years ago
Even though I've never met Arthur and I'm sure he's a perfectly nice man, how could I vote for anything *but* crotchety old fart in that poll? Legendary is winning in a landslide, so no harm done. Great work on the polls, Age. They crack me up.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: sun article 03/05/02 - 22 years ago
For heaven's sake Apple, calm down! ) Sorry, that was way too easy, so of course I just had to do it.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: sun article 03/05/02 - 22 years ago
I suspect that the Sun author, knowingly or unknowingly, was referencing an earlier article on the Harvard game written by an outside source (USCHO, maybe?) that refers to Arthur Mintz as "legendary." It's not just Cornell fans, although he's obviously pretty legendary among rabid fans of the Big Red, too.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: pwr question - 22 years ago
Actually, it has Cornell tied for first by virtue of losing the comparison to BU, but for seeding purposes Cornell would win the comparison with UNH, which would make the Big Red the likely #1 seed in the NCAAs. Yikes! Who would've guessed that those two games could be so big? I suspect that this is all because of the bunching at the top of the PWR. If you look at the current Pairwise, therby tml5 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Player of the Week - 22 years ago
I could've sworn that Murray had 2 goals and 3 assists, but I guess either I misheard or one of them got changed. Or maybe the ECAC screwed up. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that happened.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Clarkson fight clip @ eLynah - 22 years ago
The player in front of the net trading slashes with Cook was *definitely* O'Flaherty. If you can manage to keep an eye on him, you may see whether or not he was the one that threw the extra punches, but from the pressbox angle it's tough to tell who's throwing punches and who's just pushing and shoving. I have also seen worse altercations that didn't result in DQs (see the Harvard game), butby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Clarkson fight clip @ eLynah - 22 years ago
Well, the big clip looked quite good. A bit dark perhaps, but much much better than I'd expected it to be, and certainly clear enough to get an idea of what was going on. I should probably point out that this is the first time I've viewed a clip on ELynah in about 2 years. Very impressive. Well done, Age! Thanks again!by tml5 - Hockey
Re: When should you get in line? - 22 years ago
Keep in mind that last season home ice wasn't a sure thing until the last game. This season announcements about playoff tickets were made at the last two home games, so there may be more demand. Either way, I doubt that the tickets will sell out before mid to late afternoon on day that they go on sale to those without season tickets, if the games sell out at all. In fact, I know several peopleby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Retired Numbers - 22 years ago
I've seen several teams this season that did not line up in number order. one of Dartmouth/UVM, both of Princeton/Yale, UAH (I think, it was awhile ago), Harvard, and maybe Brown didn't, at least as far as I remember. That's the only reason I noted it as something that Cornell does.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Retired Numbers - 22 years ago
Actually, another neat numbers thing that I noticed this season is lining up in numerical order for the national anthems. I haven't noticed very many other teams doing this. Anybody know if there's some particular reason for it - has it been going on for a long time, or is it just a quirk of Schafer's and/or the team's?by tml5 - Hockey
