Re: OT: Baseball scoring - 21 years ago
IIRC, an HBP is not scored as a walk. So, is a perfect game still a perfect game if there's an HBP? What is the exact requirement - is it no walks, no hits, or is it all 27 batters retired in order? I thought it was the latter, which leaves the question - what do you call a no hitter with no walks and an HBP? Just a no-hitter? Can it be a no-hitter if you hit someone?by tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: Baseball scoring - 21 years ago
Thanks JTW. That was the exception that I was thinking of. I knew about the "hard play" exception, but I really can't see anyone turning the double play successfully *and* being obvious about intentionally booting the ball. Still, it's worth noting.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: Baseball scoring - 21 years ago
>If the runner were going on the pitch then he would get an SB (obviously). Is that true? Are you sure it can't be fielder indifference? Say the pitch is in the dirt but the catcher blocks it, and bobbles it for long enough that the hitter gets out of the box without getting tagged. The catcher might have a play at the plate. Now, why the catcher would choose to throw to first in this siby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Student season ticket sales - 21 years ago
Well this sucks. Someone tell me why they always do this on a tournament weekend? Ah, for it to be last fall when I was too gimpy. . . no, wait, I take that back. (Relatively) non-gimpy is good. Think I can get top of section G if I go in on Monday morning?by tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: Baseball scoring - 21 years ago
It's a flyout with the runner advancing on the play. Different people note this in different ways, but it is neither a fielder's choice nor a sac fly. I believe it's socred the same way as a ground ball where the runner advances and the batter is out. IIRC, that is not a fielder's choice because the batter does not reach safely. How about this one - how would you score a triple play where a sby tml5 - Hockey
Re: My brain hurts... - 22 years ago
Sorry, I was assuming some kind of memory function. I guess I didn't make that clear. It's way too early (um, late?), and I won't get to more of this until sometime this weekend, which is roughly when I plan to get out of bed. I'll give it a better go then. Edit - I have no idea what I'm talking about. Your memory function is totally different from what I was thinking of. Ugh.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: My brain hurts... - 22 years ago
An irresistable puzzle. I hate you. ) (note - flow charts I can do, but you're on your own for writing/debugging the actual code, since I can't actually program) Just to make sure I've got this straight: You want to know the number of skaters for each team on the ice. This means you need a flow chart of sorts that incorporates rules for the following: (Cornell number on left in all cby tml5 - Hockey

Re: 2003 FF - 22 years ago
I'm planning on it, although affordability is a big issue. Still, I figure with Buffalo in 2003 and Boston in 2004, I can at least potentially hit two FFs.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: [Lax] Who's going to Princeton (4/20) - 22 years ago
For anyone going to Princeton, particularly starving student types, I suggest getting a big sandwich at Hoagie Haven and then walking down the block to Thomas Sweet for ice cream. The ice cream will probably cost more than the sandwich, but it's worth it.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: [Lax] Dartmouth @ C.U. (Sat., 4/13) - 22 years ago
And Greenhalgh just set the record for goals by a rookie, too - or at least that's what the announcement sounded like.by tml5 - Hockey

Sounds like Cornell's pressuring. Cornell scores on a Dartmouth giveaway. 5-3 Red. Grady's fun to listen to.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: weather - 22 years ago
Thanks, Keith, that's exactly the point I was trying to make. Can't play hockey without ice, and ice is more likely to become unplayable. Hell, the ice at the Whale became unplayable last year, and that's an indoor facility! )by tml5 - Hockey
Re: WANT TO HAVE SOME FUN? - 22 years ago
No, but for entirely different reasons. Extreme weather conditions and unplayable surfaces are far more common in outdoor, uncovered, open air hockey rinks than they are in outdoor, uncovered, open air fall and spring sporting venues (particularly with turf, which I think is always unplayable, but that's a different argument). Rain, wind, and generally crappy weather are a part of football, ultby tml5 - Hockey
women's hockey - 22 years ago
Rumor has it that there are some good recruits coming in. Also, Bestwick and Murao - two of the top scorers - return. The sophomores (soon to be juniors) greatly improved this year, particularly Allyson Simpson and Anita Khar. The current freshmen, Neremberg and Hannah in particular, are solid, gritty forwards that do a lot of little things right. The big issue down the line is in net. Nby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Notes on the Frozen Four (long) - 22 years ago
Yeah, all, er, both of us women's hockey fans are dying to know. Seriously - it'd be interesting to see what she has to say about both the men's and the women's teams. The women improved tremendously over the course of this past season, which was a nice change from the past couple of seasons. The big key for the women's team next year will be recruiting. Can they find people to fill the bigby tml5 - Hockey
Re: [Lax] Syracuse @ Cornell, 4/9 - 22 years ago
One question - anyone know what happened on the Cornell offsides that wasn't? I had no idea what was going on, but all of a sudden Cornell had the ball and the Syracuse coach was going ballistic.by tml5 - Hockey
And a new lax fan is born. . . - 22 years ago
In case anyone cares: I'd been meaning to go to a lax game for years, and just never got around to it. Hey, I had a sport of my own to worry about in the spring. Anyway, one of my students is on the team, and he emailed me about missing class last week for a road game, and told me to go check out the game. On his assertion that "it's gonna be great," and the fact that it's #1 Syraby tml5 - Hockey
Re: April Fools! - 22 years ago
Pelletier was hardly a star during his time here, and he was still basically backing up Elliott when he left (although I suppose it's possible that if he had stayed he could've won the starting job). A damn good backup, certainly, and capable of starting on a lot of other teams, but a backup all the same.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Off-Topic: NHL Hockey, not College Hockey - 22 years ago
That's exactly what I mean. Also, I keep forgetting that Lindros got to the NHL at a relatively young age, so I think he's older than he is (and, in all likelihood, that I think Hlavac and co are slightly younger than they are). I think you're generous giving Lindros 2-3 years, too.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Off-Topic: NHL Hockey, not College Hockey - 22 years ago
I agree that the coach is a huge problem. I don't agree with many of the moves that Sather has been making (as if that isn't obvious by now). He had success in Edmonton with limited resources. Now that he's got resources, he's building a team that lacks chemistry, leadership, defense, and special teams. He's giving up solid young talent for guys who won't be around in 2-3 years, and guys whoby tml5 - Hockey

Re: Off-Topic: NHL Hockey, not College Hockey - 22 years ago
The Bure trade was a real coup, since the Rangers gave up effectively nothing for him. Still, despite his speed he is NOT a great two-way player. Anyone else watch Bertuzzi five-hole him on the way to the goal in his first game with New York? Is he better defensively than he was 6 years ago? Maybe, but what does that really say? He's on the PK? Great. Wasn't Jurassic Mark on the PK until hby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Off-Topic: NHL Hockey, not College Hockey - 22 years ago
Where was the defense last night? Probably the same place it's been all season - not in New York. The Bure pickup and the York trade were perfect Ranger deals. A high-priced forward with surgically repaired knees who thinks the world ends at his own blueline, followed immediately by a trade shipping away their only true two-way forward for yet another mediocre offenseman in Poti. Oh, but I foby tml5 - Hockey

Twinkies used to taste great back in the day because you were a kid then. I'm convinced that the flavor of Twinkies hasn't changed a lick since my Dad was a kid, except that they've been getting progressively more stale. In fact, I'm convinced that the current twinkies were made in the same batch as the ones that were sold when my Dad was a kid. At any rate, a lot of the Twinkies tasting lby tml5 - Hockey
Re: NCAA Game 2: UNH - 22 years ago
The goal was scored five hole, based on what I saw on the replay. Under the stick, right through the pads, and into the net. At full speed I also thought it went in because Underhill didn't really seal off the post, just under the arm or possibly just outside of his left pad. The replay surprised me, and everyone else I was with, since none of us thought it had gone in *through* Underhill. Unby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Really, REALLY off-topic: Pepsi - 22 years ago
Strictly speaking, the ice at Placid *is* the official standard. NCAA rulebook goes by the Olympic sheet, unless I'm much mistaken. However, the NCAA rulebook provides that caveat that the ice should be "as close as possible" to the measurements given, and it's interesting that the tourney games are all held on NHL sized surfaces.by tml5 - Hockey
