Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: poor grades? - 21 years ago
Just to add a piece of info to the mix, honors at Cornell is determined by each department (or maybe school if the departments are lazy). In ECE it's a a Junior Year Honors Seminary, Is it just me, or do the vows required at most seminaries seem unduly harsh for an honors program? Sorry, couldn't resist, even though I'm sure it's just a typo.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Around D-I tonight - 21 years ago
Criterion ties within an individual comparison are not broken. If Cornell and NoDak have the same TUC record, then neither team receives a comparison point. If the total number of comparison points are tied, RPI (the rating system) is used as the tiebreaker, which makes RPI worth effectively 1.5 comparison points. As far as I know it's always been this way. For example, if Cornell and NoDak hby tml5 - Hockey
Koronis and the Campus Store - 21 years ago
Er, sorry, the "Cornell Store" - hey, am I allowed to say that here, or am I infringing on a copyright? Anyway, the campus store is now selling the Koronis replicas for about $90. Maybe $85. So if you abhor ordering stuff online, or just can't wait to get your jersey, or if you just want to look at them, there they are. Non-Ithacans are stuck, I'm afraid. Hey, Age, do you think theby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Murray. . . - 21 years ago
Well, I would certainly move, but now you know why I'm not an elite level hockey player. Ok, that and the skating/size/ability thing. I don't disagree that throwing in a few more wristers could be more effective, I just disagree with those railing against Murray's shot selection - IMO it's not really that bad. I guess my previous post was mostly pointing out that it might actually be harderby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Murray. . . - 21 years ago
Hey, Murray's slapshot is only 95, so fear shouldn't be a factor. ) I agree that hitting the net is better than missing it, and if a wrister will be more effective it should be used a little bit more. Maybe the coaches, and/or Murray himself, don't think that a wrister is so effective from up high, hence the slapshots. Or maybe he feels like he hit the net plenty last year, so it's only a maby tml5 - Hockey
Re: 2 North Country Wins - 21 years ago
I hate to butt in on the Murray bashing, but I think the complaints about Murray's shots being predictable and his woes on the point are a bit off base. Cornell runs an umbrella style power play, which, as far as I know, is predicated on working the puck around the perimeter to set up quick shots from the points to get rebounds and deflections, or passes to the weak side, depending on which oneby tml5 - Hockey
Re: "Kicked In" Goal - 21 years ago
As I said on the day of the game, it definitely went off of the Cornell player's skate, and he definitely was in the act of sweeping his foot towards the net when he made contact with the puck (which was trickling wide until it hit Moulson's skate). Mind you, I don't believe that he was intentionally kicking at the puck. I don't even believe that he knew where the puck was, at least not well enby tml5 - Hockey
Re: World Junior Championships - 21 years ago
Damn you, Whelan! You did this while I was responding to the BU-CU thread. I doubt any coach would begrudge a player taking this opportunity, if for no other reason than it might hurt recruiting and the coach's relationship with a player who is obviously top-notch. As for the universities, see my post on the BU-CU thread. Cornell probably encourages this from its student-athletes as well -by tml5 - Hockey
Re: LeNeveu - 21 years ago
Bill, one thing you're missing here is that Cornell (the institution, not the hockey team) encourages its athletes to take these opportunities. It's good for the school in terms of name recognition, prestige for the athletic department, and alumni donations. I would argue that by playing for the Canadian team, LeNeveu might be doing *more* for the university than he would have by passing on theby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Saturday BU updates - 21 years ago
The kick was definitely a Cornell player. It was definitely off of a skate. There was definitely a movement of the leg towards the goal. The Cornell player was turing around and in doing so swept his leg towards the goal mouth. The puck happened to be under his skate, and went from trickling wide of the net to accelerating into the goal. It was probably unintentional, but when you're on iceby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Farewell to tshirts - 21 years ago
Yeah, I especially liked the tiger costume. The only thing is that the lettering was too small to be read from the student sections. But why am I complaining? Nice work!by tml5 - Hockey
Re: cornell @ dartmouth 11/16/02 - updates - 21 years ago
So there's a French guy on WHCU right now. Is this same guy coming through the pay per view netcast? If so, so much for improved listening experiences. . . Edit - weird. Must be atmospheric conditions. The game's on.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: College Hockey Travel Guide - 21 years ago
I prefer just about every restaurant in town to Moosewood because it's overpriced, bland, and coasting on a reputation built by the sales of admittedly excellent cookbooks. Lost Dog and Maxies are excellent variety when compared with the Chappy, which does serve nachos and stuff, the Hot Truck, and that overpriced burger joint. . . er. . . Ruloffs. I'll look through the digital images that I'veby tml5 - Hockey
Re: College Hockey Travel Guide - 21 years ago
While we're being picky about the food choices, I would suggest Maxies or the Lost Dog over Moosewoods any day of the week. I prefer Maxies, but vegetarians will find slim pickings there. I also wouldn't suggest Purity, just because they only do ice cream and you can get it at pretty much all of the aforementioned restaurants. Just be sure to warn your vegetarian friends to stay away from it (by tml5 - Hockey
Re: Travel to Burlington - 21 years ago
The only time I went to Burlington I took the following route from Albany (79-206-88 is the best way from Ithaca to Albany. You pick up 88 in Bainbridge, and 206 in Whitney Point). These directions came from a Vermont resident, but they may have been the easiest as opposed to the fastest. Get on I-87 and head north to exit 20. You want to get on rt. 149 east, but this means taking a left offby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Andy Noel - 21 years ago
That's a good point, Al. It also reeks of bureaucratic stupidity. Someone was probably assigned the task of exploring other avenues, and that someone never considered talking to the fans for whatever reason. Then Athletics made this regrettable decision, probably expecting every other school on OCSN (and there are a lot of them) to do the same, and it backfired. Now they're all about defendinby tml5 - Hockey
Re: copyrights - 21 years ago
Another option might be to replace the official school names with non-copyrighted nicknames. You might even be able to get away with Red @ Crimson. Cornell is known as The Big Red Tape for a reason - although I don't know whether or not they'll deny your request, I *do* know that the ultimate team had some trouble getting "Cornell Ultimate" shirts (just shirts for sale, as opposed toby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Yale v. NoDak recap - 21 years ago
Personally, I'm bummed that Higgins is out for two reasons: 1) I'd like to see him play - could be the only chance I get this year, and maybe the only chance I get before he jumps to the pros. 2) Beating a severely crippled opponent is much less satisfying than beating a team that's at full speed. OTOH, beating a crippled opponent is better than losing, hence the joy. But don't be too joyfulby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Another new "feature" - 21 years ago
Yeah, it happens periodically on IE 5.5 with win2k, but I suspect it'll clear right up if/when I ever get around to updating to IE6. I'd go Mozilla but there are other irritating bugs, like the lack of back/forward buttons at random times (I haven't figured out the pattern, but sometimes they just don't appear - and no, it's not from opening a new browser window).by tml5 - Hockey
Aurora 3, Cornell 2 (women) - 21 years ago
So I went to Lynah to pick up my skates this afternoon, and there was a women's hockey game going on. Didn't see it on the schedule the last time I checked. It was an exhibition against a university team from Canada. When I got there it was 1-1 with about 15 minutes left in the third. Aurora scored with less than 10 minutes left, and Cornell answered to even it up at around the 5 minute markby tml5 - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. York, 10/27 - 21 years ago
When you say "skating ok" I suspect you mean Knoepfli, who looked ok after taking that hit up high (well, once he got up, that is). Probably just got his bell rung. I didn't see Moulson put his right foot on the ice after taking that trip, although he was flexing the knee a bit. The York player got 5 and a game DQ, while Paolini got 5 and a game misconduct. Important distinction, thby tml5 - Hockey

Re: tix on sale... - 21 years ago
I bought single game tickets at around 10:15, and the line was huge. It's probably still there, if there are any tickets left. Harvard sold out and Brown was down to single seats by the time I got to the window. From what I could see on the seating chart there were less than 100 tickets left for each of the other games, although there's no way of knowing whether or not all of the games willby tml5 - Hockey
Re: The Red and White Game - 21 years ago
The sign at Lynah says that tickets will be available at the door, and the game is Friday the 18th at 7:00.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: The Red and White Game - 21 years ago
Well, for those of you on campus I remember seeing a flyer on the entrance to Lynah - the one next to the zamboni garage door, where you go in for public skating and pick-up hockey. It gave the date, time, and ticket price for the red/white game, but I didn't pay much attention to it. I'll try to remember to look at it the next time I go there, but I can't promise that I'll make it before thisby tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: To Mac or not to Mac - 21 years ago
Huh. I guess I was only looking at the ones that had it built in. Live and learn. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that if I eventually decide to go out and buy one of these things.by tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: To Mac or not to Mac - 21 years ago
I'm no guru on the names of Mac hardware, but I believe the AirPort card is a wireless card. If I'm right, then it lets you access a LAN or the internet (in appropriate locations) via a wireless connection. Wasn't the AirPort what Apple was calling wireless connections? The Powerbooks have it built in. Standard. If you want built in wireless in a PC laptop you have to make sure it's listedby tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: To Mac or not to Mac - 21 years ago
That's a good point about the ibooks. Personally, for my usage needs, I was *only* looking at the powerbook, so that's why I focused on it. What do the iBooks weigh? Average battery life? Full-sized keyboard? Greg's friend might be interested in that stuff, although the apple website probably tells you. No need for a discussion on the relative merits of Win2k vs. OS X. Most users won't notby tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: To Mac or not to Mac - 21 years ago
This is coming from a PC user, but I'll tell you what I know. This is based on personal research (I was thinking about buying a laptop myself, but lack of funds stopped me) and friends' experiences. The G4 powerbook (sleek titanium. . . mmmm. . .) with OS X works like a dream, is fairly light (5 or 6 pounds) has a big screen and full-size keyboard, a long lasting battery, and lots of great netwby tml5 - Hockey
Re: OT: Baseball scoring - 21 years ago
I'm such a sucker - The error on the foul ball is scored because the batter gets to continue hitting. If the batter then reaches base, it's an indirect result of the error on the foul ball. As for the assist with no out - I imagine that an error on the first baseman might be scored as such. Say the shortstop makes a brilliant play and the first baseman just misses the ball. Is that an assisby tml5 - Hockey
