Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Cornell 3 Union 0 ECAC championship 2010 photo recap - 14 years ago
Great photos Bill. Glad you made it back in time for the title game!by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Union - 14 years ago
This has to be as dominating a league postseason as any team and goalie has had. In four games, we never trailed and gave up just one goal (in the first period of the first game). As Scrivens said after Friday's game, "kudos" to the Big Red!by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Albany Roll Call - 14 years ago
I'll be there, both for the hoops at the Bayou and of course, the hockey games! Not looking forward to trekking to the Boardwalk in future years.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Harvard 0 at Cornell 3 Game 2 Postgame - 14 years ago
Great quote by Scrivens in Monday's Ithaca Journal: "I'm going to be able to call these guys up in 20 years and say 'Hey remember that last game we played at home and how crazy the fans were?' We're not going to remember the score. We're not going to remember who scored, but we're going to remember the rink and the fans and the atmosphere which is what it's all about, I think."by dbilmes - Hockey

billhoward Harvard Crimson as of Monday morning has the game one story posted, only. The Crimson story also has Riley Nash listed as a freshman. We wish!by dbilmes - Hockey
Special time for Big Red - 14 years ago
As I was driving back from Cornell on Sunday, I was thinking what an extraordinary time this is for Cornell sports. Our women's hockey team is the ECAC champions and is in the Frozen Four. Our men's hockey team is the favorite to win the ECACs this weekend, and barring a collapse, should also make it to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. Our men's basketball team has won three straby dbilmes - Other Sports

Speaking of Yale's goalie, I listened to the Yale game on their student radio station, and the announcers were horrible. They referred to the Yale goalie as "Billy" throughout, while all the other players were referred to by their last names. And most of the time they didn't bother telling you which team had the puck, they just called out the names of the players who had it and you wereby dbilmes - Hockey
Re: The New Cowbell Guy - 14 years ago
Jeff Hopkins '82 Good luck, Robert. Looking forward to hearing you in Albany. I believe Elie will handle the cowbell duties for the next six games. Robert will take over starting next season. But Elie made the announcement last night because it was the final home game of the season.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Basketball - 14 years ago
YankeeLobo Guesses at what seed we'll get? I've heard everything from a 10 to a 13. John Feinstein on NPR Monday morning said we could be as high as a 9 seed!by dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Other Scores, Saturday 3/6 - 14 years ago
It sounds like a fun night Saturday night at Q. Two of their defensemen are injured, including their best one, and they had to move a forward back to the blue line. And their goalie cleared the puck onto a Dartmouth player's stick to set up Dartmouth's first goal.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Brown basketball - 14 years ago
Impressive performance by Cornell in Yale tonight. Few signs of a letdown after clinching Ivy title the night before. We also had to overcome some terrible foul calls on Foote by one of the refs, who called three fouls on him in the second half from the opposite side of the court after the two refs with a better view didn't call anything. Dale carried us for a while, and Wittman got hot for a whiby dbilmes - Other Sports

Perhaps Rebecca Johnston knew that Dave the Zamboni driver at Lynah nearly lost his job, and wants to be ready in case the position opens again.by dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Cornell 4 at Dartmouth 5 - 14 years ago
This was a terrible loss. The easy thing to do is to blame the basketball pep band. When they came into the hockey rink after the basketball game, we were ahead 4-2 midway through the third period, and everything fell apart after that. But being a former high school band member, I'm not going to make them the scapegoat! Even though we were up 4-2 at that point, we hadn't played well most of theby dbilmes - Hockey

If you thought parking was a mess in Princeton on Saturday, wait until you see what it's going to be like at Sucks this Friday. Both the basketball and hockey games are sold out, and the parking is a mess around Sucks' rink when there's just a hockey game going on. I can't imagine how bad it's going to be with both sold-out games. I'm hoping to get there by 6:15, which should give me a shot at geby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Just out......#25 in basketball - 14 years ago
Today's Cornell Daily Sun has a photo of Penn fans storming the court after their victory over Cornell on Friday. This may have been the first time in history that opposing fans stormed the court after defeating Cornell in basketball. That's not something we're going to see too often! As painful as it is to see, it's a statement about where our program currently stands.by dbilmes - Other Sports
Harvard tickets available - 14 years ago
I just got off the phone with the Harvard ticket office. They have tickets available, apparently ones the Harvard fans aren't using. If you're still looking for tickets, or know anyone who is, give them a call. My tickets are in Section 9, the corner in the Harvard section, but there isn't much difference between the Harvard and Cornell sections in Lynah East.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 Quinnipiac 0, post game - 14 years ago
I've never seen an arena clear out so quickly by fans of a team which was only trailing by two goals. Fortunately, the fans directly behind me, who pounded their thundersticks non-stop throughout the entire first period in what appeared to be an obnoxious attmept to annoy us, left after the first period. Most of the Q fans left steadily throughout the third period, including nearly the entire stuby dbilmes - Hockey

YankeeLobo If Harvard beat us in Cambridge, would the one-game playoff be played at a neutral site or are there other tie breakers to determine where the playoff is held? Ivy League playoffs are always held at a neutral site. As exciting as that would be, let's hope we don't have to worry about it this year!by dbilmes - Other Sports
Quinnipiac roll call - 14 years ago
I'll be there plus five. Just a reminder that the game begins at 8. Also, the first 1,500 fans receive a free thunderstick, so make sure you get there early if you want your own thunderstick. Seriously, you do want to get there fairly early, since once the parking areas get filled up, you have to park a few miles away on campus and take a shuttle bus to the arena. Hopefully, the pep band will beby dbilmes - Hockey
Re: WSJ Article 1/27/2010 - 14 years ago
Meanwhile, this week's Sports Illustrated has a huge, glowing article on Harvard and its star point guard, Jeremy Lin. It makes it sound like we're the underdog on Saturday night. In any case, I hope we can taunt him without resulting to racial slurs. According to the article, he was met with racist taunts at every road game last season.by dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: New Cornell football coach: Kent Austin (first impressions) - 14 years ago
billhoward I'm dying to know . . . why Andy Noel talked so much about him being a dedicated recruiter in the wake of Mississippi papers saying it's not his strong suit. What else is Andy Noel supposed to say? If he's not a good recruiter, he's not going to say it (it also means he shouldn't have hired him -- but that's another story that only time will tell). As much as I'd love to see usby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Review of Lynah Rink - 14 years ago
Reading his mention of the fans waving newspapers during the introductions reminds me that the current issue of Sports Illustrated has a feature story on the Northern Iowa men's basketball team, and in one photo, the Northern Iowa fans are standing and holding newspapers in front of their faces. They're not shaking them, though.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Latest Cornell football candidates - 14 years ago
billhoward This is a discussion in a vacuum. Shuttering the football program isn't going to happen. I know full well Cornell isn't going to drop its football program, even if few people really care about it. But it's always fun to get people riled up -- especially on eLynah, where it doesn't take much to do so! Perhaps I'm jaded because the football team got off to a 3-0-1 start my freshmaby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Latest Cornell football candidates - 14 years ago
Lauren '06 Are there really people out there who would adjust their giving based on the success of the football team? (Other than, perhaps, football alumni who matriculate in these hypothetical boom times and had a better time on campus because they weren't deeply demoralized every Saturday?) Lauren's on the right track here. We should just drop football. It's got to be costing much more moneyby dbilmes - Other Sports

Who scored our goals? How did we play? I didn't get a chance to listen or watch the game online, and was hoping to at least see a game thread.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Re:RPI @ Princeton - 14 years ago
Rita RPI wins 4-1 at Hobey Baker rink. I watched some of the game on TV and was wondering why the announcer kept referring to the "great rivalry between these two schools." Does he know something we don't know about the storied rivalry between Princeton and RPI?by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Poll: What is the most useless stat in hockey? - 14 years ago
Plus-minus is a useless stat because a player on a checking line may be an excellent defensive forward, but have a terrible plus-minus number because he's usually matched against the opposition's No. 1 line. I used to cover the Hartford Whalers (remember them?) for a local paper and never put much stock in that statistic. Re: Cornell 2 at UNH 2 (end of 2nd) - 14 years ago
As poorly as we played in Florida, we played well today. Even with UNH coming off a long break, they still had the home ice advantage and the Olympic size rink, and a hot goaltender. The oft-criticized B. Nash played a solid game, and this was the best cycling in the offensive zone I've seen us have all year, especially that one shift with Scali's line in the third period. This was the Cornell teby dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Cornell 2 at UNH 2 (end of 2nd) - 14 years ago
Barry Melrose just called Cornell the best team he's seen this season. He also made a comment earlier: "Cornell has a lot of Canadians . . . a lot." As for the game, if we lose it, it will because we dominated the first two periods, but as usual, couldn't finish our chances. It looks like we may be held to 2 goals for the third straight game, and we're not going to win many games scoriby dbilmes - Hockey
