Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Season's Over - 3 years ago
Stop your whining. The first year I attended Cornell Men's Varsity hockey games at Lynah the Big Red went 2 and 19.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Article choosing among candidates for the Richter Award - 3 years ago
Ken: Concur! Baseball is a marvelous game for statisticians and their efforts DO yield results, but the pace and the strategies of these two games are galaxies apart. Until hockey coaches can stop a breakaway by a left-handed shooter with a weak backhand on a right-handed goalie with a strong glove hand and replace either or both players before play resumes statisticians won't help anybody very mby osorojo - Hockey
Re: Article choosing among candidates for the Richter Award - 3 years ago
I trust the eyes and opinions of people who play the game more than I trust the subjective conclusions of those who only watch the game. Their figures not significant. If they were, they would be cleaning up in Vegas, not parsing six or eight pages of decimal points.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Article choosing among candidates for the Richter Award - 3 years ago
It seems the opposition skaters on the ice who shot at various goalies would have a more credible opinion than say, an observer in the rink or - worse- an observer on T.V. - Are the MVP Goalie voters statisticians or are they players and observers of the games?by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Vote Barron for Hobey - 4 years ago
As for GAA as a measure of excellence in tending goal what do the goalies themselves think about it being a critical measure of talent in goal?by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Season's Over - 4 years ago
Urgate - I suspect this 'shtick' -"What makes Cornell hockey interesting to you?" interests me for many of the same reasons it interests you - except for the regrettable ad-hominem.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Season's Over - 4 years ago
I dislike name dropping , costumes, cute demonstrations at hockey games, and lengthy postmortems of hockey games -especially those involving long columns of numbers and blizzards of decimal points. I get a kick out of watching athletic skill, winning strategies, persistence, resilience, and teamwork. Booklets of page upon page of numerical game exegesis do not interest me in the least and alwaysby osorojo - Hockey

The soul of sports is the pursuit of excellence. The 19-20 C.U. Men's Hockey Team pursued excellence and damn near caught it. Be happy.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: ECAC Early Departures - 4 years ago
Back on track. Protracted worrying about something you have no control over is the definition of "onanistic". Ask around.by osorojo - Hockey

BORED!! A guy from Toronto wants to be a Newfie, can't figure how to do it, goes to a doctor. The doctor says, "I'll have to remove one tenth of your brain to do that." Toronto guy says, "Do it!" Later the surgeon rushes into the recovery room and says to the patient, "Sir, I'm so sorry, we misread the instructions on your operation directions. Instead of removing one tenby osorojo - Hockey

Hockey season is truly over now. Defending government incompetence in The U.S.A. by attacking the honesty of the Chinese leaders sounds like something they do at Harvard. I'm sure the dolts in attendance there accept this as whole cloth.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
Ice rinks across the U.S.A., Canada, the World are closed today, and tomorrow, and . . . Current speculations, even those featuring pages of scores, shots, saves etc. have lost whatever relevance they might ever have had. How about some scientific, numerical predictions on the probability of ANY college hockey games next fall?by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Trotsky's Fantasy Post-Season - 4 years ago
The USCHO virtual simulation of the imaginary quarter-finals shows B.C.men defeating Cornell men. This is SO wrong. Somebody ought to publish a rebuttal, with at least five pages of statistics and arithmatec carried out to the 4th decimal place!by osorojo - Hockey
Re: 2020-21 Schedule - 4 years ago
The 2020-2021 hockey season is only six months away. I read pandemics usually display a second spike in contagion rate, particularly in the fall. What are the odds we will have a full college hockey schedule next year?by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Vote Barron for Hobey - 4 years ago
These kinds of articles pop up a lot when players are negotiating contracts. The articles usually aren't signed.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Trotsky's Fantasy Post-Season - 4 years ago
I just read the computer-generated results of a hypothetical next round in the 2020 NCAA division I men's National Ice Hockey Championship at USCHO online. It was unconvincing and deadly boring. The only numbers were predicted final scores. However, if the results had included six or eight pages of computer-generated numbers which parsed statistics of previous games the pain of the short seasonby osorojo - Hockey
Re: Funny opposing fans at games - 4 years ago
A long time ago, in the Harkness days, my wife-to-be and I were seated in the east end of Lynah. We noticed some bozos sitting two rows behind us had smuggled in two big packages. We figured it was beer, but were disabused of this conclusion when shortly after the opening drop of the puck a god-awful loud "HONK!!!" blasted the back of our heads. A car battery and a truck horn had been sby osorojo - Hockey
Re: Season's Over - 4 years ago
Grim reality: Reputable sources all predict a 1 to 1-1/2 year wait before an effective inoculation against coronavirus is available to the public. On the bright side, Cornellians would be able to make a reasonable claim their women's and men's ice hockey teams were both national champions for two consecutive years.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Season's Over - 4 years ago
How about compiling all the performance statistics of top-rated teams accurately (to the third decimal place) and entering them into your favorite program to determine the winner of the D-1 men's and women's college ice hockey championships? Please share your results, and be willing to defend them!by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
Proud? I'm pleased, not proud - since I had no influence upon this team to be proud of. I watched my first men's Cornell hockey game in Lynah Rink in 1959 and have followed the team closely ever since. I love the game, support the team and my alma mater, and rejoice when they excel. I'm old and cranky and don't appreciate multi-page attempts to turn athletic competition into a binary enterprise -by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
The pursuit of excellence is the motive for a love of sports. I detest attempts to digitize excellence in life, women or sports. Turn off your computers and watch the GAME! And when it's over don't digitalize it, chop it into little pieces, rearrange them, and spit them back out.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
Yeah, but am I dumber than the guy who did NOTHING to deal with the coronavirus for three whole months, right up to a week ago?by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
I just read a revered expert's proclamation from a week ago that the coronavirus is less virulent than the Asian Flu of some years back, and the college hockey playoffs during the Asian Flu epidemic went on uninterrupted. This proposed cancelation is sounding like a liberal con-job.by osorojo - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
It appears that controlling your environment: the people you encounter, the duration of your encounter, and the distance of your encounter - are the critical factors in transmission of the coronavirus. These are factors for which statisticians can provide credible and useful information for hockey playoff schedulers (?!!) and hockey fans.by osorojo - Hockey

Suggest Those who dismiss the severity and risk of coronavirus in hockey arenas or in general read Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death".by osorojo - Hockey

Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
It's not hard to imagine lawsuits arising from people who attended a sporting event and within 14 days tested positive for coronavirus. BIG $!Sports venues are certain to be considering this fact while they decide whether or not to open to the public.by osorojo - Hockey
