Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Q Game Thread - 2 years ago
BearLoverIt’s a net negative because of the same home/road weighting that affects every other team. Cornell will benefit from the same weighting when it goes on the road against Q (or any other team). Because of home/road weighting, all possible outcomes of a home game average out to a net negative. 0.8 of a win is not a net negative -- at least not in the way I'm using the term. Re: Q Game Thread - 2 years ago
Bottom line - it isn't really a "win" as far as Pairwise is concerned. That's why the team dropped. Quinnipiac result was a net negative - just like the Brown win and Alaska wins were. You can partially blame ECAC - including Cornell - for these "rules." ECAC fought hard to have home/road weightings in the RPI because it felt like it was always being hurt in Pairwise by playinby adamw - Hockey
Re: Opponents and Others, 2021-22 - 2 years ago
billhoward The NCAA remains apoplectic that small schools like Union / Clarkson should be allowed in D1, ditto Hopkins in lacrosse. In comparison: "The NCAA" is not apoplectic about it, and "the NCAA" has nothing to do with the choice.by adamw - Hockey
Re: PWR - 2 years ago
upprdeck If you run the pairwise probability matrix on CHN for the rest of the season they move us to 3 and QUin down to 15.. must be something about Quin schedule they dont like. Haven't even begun to run the matrix yet for this season - that's probably 2 years old ... but reminds me I need to hide the link. BTW - discovered a glitch in our Pairwise Customizer that wasn't properly accountinby adamw - Hockey
Re: Yale game postponed - 2 years ago
SwampyImagine what will happen if there aren’t two weekends with open dates, and Brown has to fit in both Colgate and Cornell for games midweek. Princeton and Harvard are currently scheduled to finish the regular season with 3 games in 3 nights - the last one being at 4p Sunday, following 7p games the night before for each. Harvard being the road team.by adamw - Hockey

Jim Hyla adamw have no idea what Jim's point is - I think he's just trying to find a way to criticize me ... ymmv First, tell me where I criticized you. Second, how can you not know what my point was. I said it more than once. What you were writing was opinion, not fact. I wrote it because the comments were implying that it was true that UM called off the game because of PWR. Not that tby adamw - Hockey

upprdeck no idea on how Clarkson is losing to STL/Union/RPI splitting with Alaska/MTech beating Wisc ties with Quin/Canisius/Wisc Still probably on the road the next test we need to pass.. Not as worried about the Goalies as the sloppy D in our own end on plays we have under control. The goalies seem to making save 1 pretty well so far. Re: Red Hot Hockey "Presale" - 2 years ago
Trotsky scoop85North Dakota would seem to fit the bill. Although not a lot of alums in the NY area (presumably), I imagine they would travel in large numbers to NYC for a Thanksgiving weekend.I don't agree. People spend Thanksgiving with their families. Without people in the area nobody comes. Clearly you have never met North Dakota fans 18,000 of them showed up in Nashville. Yes, not Thaby adamw - Hockey

RIT makes the most sense if there is ever a hole that needs to be filled. RIT and Union are on the precipice of being able to give scholarships.by adamw - Hockey
Re: High schools and ages - 2 years ago
It's definitely for security reasons. Not that it helps, and I don't think it's worth the bother - the DOBs are out there, on Elite Prospects, College Hockey News, etc... It's definitely not because anyone is embarrassed about ages. College hockey has been this way forever, to varying degrees, and no one has ever been embarrassed, nor should be.by adamw - Hockey

Re: ECAC Early Departures - 4 years ago
if you were on HOCKEY-L in 1995 and remember the Princeton-Brown series, it's only because of my monumental argument over it - because otherwise it would've been in the void, and no one would've noticed. there's not a lot of excuse for on-bench antics - except to say that it was genuine passion, and not calculated. It also was largely a long time ago. But off the ice, you will never find a beby adamw - Hockey
Re: 2020-21 Schedule - 4 years ago
dbilmes Given the fact that North Dakota does not have a large fan base in the tri-state area, it doesn't make sense for them to play Cornell at MSG. They would probably be more interested in playing a holiday game in a big arena in the Midwest, like in Chicago or Minneapolis. They put 10,000 people in MSG when they played Boston College there. They sold out Vegas vs. Minnesota with almost aby adamw - Hockey
Re: Vote Barron for Hobey - 4 years ago
upprdeck Don't the stats also say all shots are not created equal? Cornell shows the model. limit the quality shots. All shots are definitely not created equal. Unfortunately, in NCAA, we don't have shot location data. So SV% is the best we have.by adamw - Hockey

Dafatone adamw Swayman faces 65% more shots with a save percentage .003 less than McKay's ... We had Swayman 1st Team All-CHN - and I voted for him for the Richter Award. Also - annual reminder that the Hobey Hat Trick is NOT the "final 3 candidates" ... the winner is already known. The 3 represent the top 3 vote getters. There is no further voting. I've never really understood whyby adamw - Hockey

osorojo Ice rinks across the U.S.A., Canada, the World are closed today, and tomorrow, and . . . Current speculations, even those featuring pages of scores, shots, saves etc. have lost whatever relevance they might ever have had. How about some scientific, numerical predictions on the probability of ANY college hockey games next fall? With fans? zero. If colleges come up with solid plans forby adamw - Hockey

Re: Funny opposing fans at games - 4 years ago
TrotskyThere was still a very large Cornell crowd after our Consolation win over Clarkson. We started early in the first period pointing at Cleary and yelling YOUR COACH IS BALD!!! A few minutes later it was to RPI, YOUR COACH IS FAT!!! By the second period we would just point back and forth between the benches, like "goalie, sieve," but just with "BALD! FAT! BALD! FAT!&quoby adamw - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
Looks like 1 million is gonna be light. Announced cases have increased by a factor of 10 in one week since I said that. Most likely, actual cases are 100 times what's known. That gives us less than a week before we hit 1 million. Hope everyone is taking it seriously now. This all sucks. And yes, the federal government effed it upby adamw - Hockey
Re: Uncertainty in KRACH probability estmates (thread drift) - 4 years ago
I'd just like to say - I should've accepted the bet on whether North Dakota, Minnesota State, Cornell would really finish 1-2-3 in the Pairwise. It stayed that way for six weeks, and right to the bitter end. Never budged. (and it wouldn't have budged, either)by adamw - Hockey
Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
semsox For the record, the Ivy League statement said individual institutions will get to decide on Winter sports seasons. Given how near the end is for both the Men's and Women's teams and assuming the NCAA still has the event in some fashion (whether it's in front of empty stadiums, etc.), I very much doubt we'll make the move to end those seasons. I really wouldn't be counting on anything atby adamw - Hockey

KGR11 adamw I'd put the odds of having fans at Lake Placid or any NCAA games at 0.47% math Based on how many Monte Carlo simulations? At least 20,000 in my head - given how it is spinning.by adamw - Hockey

Re: Corona Virus And Playoff Games - 4 years ago
Jim HylaI thought you were a man of math and statistics. Well the statistics say that there aren't 1 million cases worldwide yet. So let's not promote that we could have a million here until we have some data to support the claim. If I were a betting man, I'd bet on the FF being played with no fans, only you in the press will get to enjoy it. But I'd also bet that it won't be that way becauseby adamw - Hockey
