Re: nieuwendyk retire?? - 20 years ago
Unfortunately, Selanne blew past the rookie goal-scoring record a few years later ... 1993 I believe.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk - 21 years ago
Keith, I think you're right. Just 2 strikes - not 1 or 2. Still strange that the batters are handled in a different manner than the pitchers - but that's the rule.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk - 21 years ago
Greg is half right on the answer. For some reason, what he says is correct for batters ... but for pitchers, it's determined by whether it's a "hitter's count" or "pitcher's count" at the time of entry. For example, a 2-1 count to the batter - the new batter takes over and strikes out. Strike out goes to the first batter. 2-1, 1-1, 3-1, 2-2, 1-2, 3-2 -- doesn't matter. Soby adamw - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk - 21 years ago
BRA ... you were correct. A pitcher must pitch to a full batter, or retire the side (caught stealing, pickoff, etc...) Anyone care to take a crack at the scoring rules for who gets credited with strikeout/walk when a batter/pitcher is replaced in mid at-bat? Consider it a quiz.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Nieuwendyk - 21 years ago
Regarding the rule for keeping a streak alive ... Whether anyone believes it makes sense or not, it's the rule. But, if you insist, don't take my word for it: GUIDELINES FOR CUMULATIVE PERFORMANCE RECORDS 10.24 It's the last item of the entire rule book (except, I suppose, the index). It may not make sense semantically -- the pinch hitter being pinch hit for being credited with a game plaby adamw - Hockey

The (practically) verbatim wording of the consecutive games played rule is ... the player must have at least one plate appearance, or play at least one half inning in the field.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Central Scouting Final Ranking - 21 years ago
You no longer forfeit your NCAA eligibility by opting-into the draft PRIOR to enrolling in college. This only happens if you are already enrolled in college (a la Michigan goalie Al Montoya). This was part of the NCAA pre-enrollment amateurism de-regulation package that originally could've led to Major Junior players being eligible for college hockey without penalty. The final watered down verby adamw - Hockey

I don't know how you saw this so fast. I literally posted it on USCHO, came over here, and then posted the news on ELF ... and in that span, you posted yours. Does your PC have a buzzer that goes off every time USCHO is updatedby adamw - Hockey
Re: Midget - 21 years ago
Rich, You are correct. I had my years slightly mixed up. He was signed by Ottawa with the intention of him being in the NHL. They really liked him, he was a local guy, etc... But he had a poor training camp and was sent to Grand Rapids. Late in the season, he got a chance to come up because of injuries, and was impressive. So they gave him another shot the next year, and he never looked backby adamw - Hockey
Re: Midget - 21 years ago
St. Louis was at least 23 when the 1997 draft happened. Not eligible whatsoever. Nobody even wanted him out of college. He actually signed first as a free agent with Cleveland of the IHL, along with Perrin, together. St. Louis then got signed by Calgary after that first year, and was sent to Saint John of the AHL. He tore up the AHL - but Calgary never gave him more than a cup of coffee.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Midget - 21 years ago
I used to call them the Rugrats ... and yes, they did do all sorts of showboating after goals ... but, after a while, I forgave them. I'm giving away a whole paragraph of an upcoming column ... but ... best moment I remember is, '96 NCAA game against Lake Superior. The entire West was unconvinced those guys were any good (where have we heard that before) ... So ... opening faceoff, Perrin getsby adamw - Hockey

You could see signs of it back at Vermont - which is why many believed he could play in the NHL, while Eric Perrin would struggle - among other reasons.by adamw - Hockey

The most enjoyable player to watch in 15 years of covering college hockey, and, as a result, my favorite NHL player (along with Todd White and Jeff Halpern).by adamw - Hockey

Re: OT: CSTV - 21 years ago
CSTV went on the air Monday, April 7. Thursday and Saturday, we did pre- and post-game segments from the FF. Saturday's pre-game was 30 minutes. Bob Daniels was the analyst on Thursday. Taylor on Saturday. CSTV promises to have a lot of college hockey stuff down the road.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Todd White - 21 years ago
I always thought he was 2nd ... Maybe Drury was 2nd. I'm sure if I'm wrong, you'll find it soon enough in the hockey-L archivesby adamw - Hockey

Todd White was runner up to Brendan Morrison for the 1997 Hobey.by adamw - Hockey

DiPietro wasn't much older or more experienced. He was barely 19 when he played in the NHL, after 1 season at BU.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Sportscenter - 21 years ago
Don't forget the Ithaca College alums, most of whom - like myself - got hooked on Cornell hockey while there. Karl Ravech is the most prominent one - Chris Moore does ESPN Radio. The director of the selection show was an IC alum ... and there are at least a dozen more behind the scenes.by adamw - Hockey
Re: Frozen Four - 21 years ago
Couple notes: Sean McDonough and Bob Norton are calling the FF on ESPN, with Mike Richter, perhaps. Also ... as for tickets. Cornell fans should not give up. Do not resign yourselves to not being able to get tickets. There are almost always ways of getting tickets, and it's usually not that hard, despite the sellout. Last year, there were 18,000 Minnesota fans in the building, and I guarantby adamw - Hockey

I'm saying that I'd rather not make any predictions, and just root like heck (inside).by adamw - Hockey
Re: adam picks BC to win it all - 21 years ago
Folks ... please don't take those picks seriously. I didn't even realize this was a topic of controversy until I just got home. I never, ever make public predictions. I was forced to - and basically, was trying not to be biased, and not to put the whammy on. It's just a cockamamie bracket. It means nothing - and I've explained that to the coaches and players. I never make predictions, becauby adamw - Hockey

Re: Adam W. on internet show 2/26 - 21 years ago
This show was actually 9-11 - even though it's advertised otherwise (not a great web site) - and I was on at 9:15. It is archived, if anyone's interested ... but don't get your hopes up ... I had nothing too thrilling to say. ... I'm just surprised anyone even heard this was happening. I thought this was something 6 kids listened to, but those guys say it's 10,000/week - so who knows.by adamw - Hockey
