Re: Where are our Alumni Playing Now - 6 years ago
I use CapFriendly - yes, Angello is a 2-way deal; $70 k in the minors. I think a fair amount of the decision-making process in these situations (leaving early) is the liklihood of being able to step straight into an NHL role as opposed to spending time in the miniors.by redGrinch - Hockey
Re: Where are our Alumni Playing Now - 6 years ago
Drafted players are really pushed by the NHL clubs to sign before their senior year. The teams fear that if they play out their senior year, they're only 4 months from being a free agent and being able to go to the highest bidder (a la Vesey). Such players are being paid well over what their junior hockey peers would get in similar draft rounds. Angello got $925k from the Pens - the Caps gave Sby redGrinch - Hockey
Re: Bracketology Starts - 6 years ago
I remember reading somewhee that OSU at Allentown saved a plane ride because Columbus<-->Allentown <500 miles. whereas Notre Dame was >500 miles to all the eastern sites, so it doesn't really matter where they go. For Cornell, while drawing BU sucks... on the plus side they put us with the weakest #2 seed, by the PWR.by redGrinch - Hockey
Re: Bracketology Starts - 6 years ago
Might be a bigger risk if DU wins and gets a 1 seed. neither DU or SCSU can plan North Dakota. So would they send Notre Dame there? even still, I can't imagine the NCAA sending the only #1 seed that can bus to a regional out west.by redGrinch - Hockey

Liz98 I was astonished to see the sports section cover story in the Post. Even more astonished to find John Feinstein's article inside. I had to share ... attached is an image of today's sports section. maybe someone lost a bet inside the sports dept. seriously - Maryland game was a late game... and compared to Thursday, the Cornell game was the top hoops story of the day. Alumni in the Pros - May 2009 - 14 years ago
Sasha Pokulok's been activated again and is playing for South Carolina in the ECHL playoffs. It'll be interesting to see what the Caps do w/ him in the offseason; he's a restricted free agent.... I'm not sure if they'd tender the standard current+10% offer; the driving factor is not so much the money, but the depth they've got at D both at the NHL-level and at Hershey, and they're also up againby redGrinch - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Bemidji NCAA regionals postgame - 15 years ago
One of the things that was driving me crazy during the game was Cornell winning all the wall battles and cycling well in the offensive zone... which is great... that's the way Cornell had to use its size to win this game. But there was almost never a passing option in the slot or someone driving to the net to turn the successful cycle into a scoring opportunity. And no, I don't necessarily counby redGrinch - Hockey
Re: NC$$ games Saturday 3/28/09 - 15 years ago
what's also interesting about the instant replay rule... is that if it had occurred during the regulation game... the 6 (or 2) minutes would've been replayed... even if it was the end of regulation by the time there was a whistle. I don't know the specifics in the NCAA, but I think in the NHL, the video review booth says there will be a review... it's not up to the on-ice refs.by redGrinch - Hockey

Robinhow much penalty time did ND have this evening? 5 minors, 10 minutes - only 4 during the critical parts - 2 hookings and 2 interference.... see box scoreby redGrinch - Hockey

$2.5 mil per? wow! Congrats to Murray of course. But looking from a salary growth standpoint for the NHL, that's an awful lot for a guy who's got 2 career NHL goals and 14 assists. when guys like Braydon Coburn are at $1.3 mil; Shaone Morrison at $1.9 mil; even guys like Kronwall at $3 mil and Ryan Suter at $3.5 mil....by redGrinch - Hockey

Josh '99Murray was ejected from Sweden's 3-2 loss to Russia on Saturday. “It was perfectly clean”, says Murray. "Maybe it could have been an interference call but that’s it. It was a clean shoulder, not even close to be from behind” And the take from the Russians, specifically Ovechkin... Re: Lynah Faithful Reference - 16 years ago
During the Caps playoff games, we were having "red-outs", which did look very impressive in person and on TV ... during the national anthem in game 7, there was a faint rumbling of "RED" at the appropriate time. I think my goal next season is to have that be an actual cry and to phase out the stupid "O" (for those out of the area, Baltimore chants "O" forby redGrinch - Hockey

Re: Game time on Thursday? - 16 years ago
There's usually 3 afternoon slots and 2 evening slots for the games. The evening slots are about 730pm (EDT) and 10pm (EDT)... give or take about 20 minutes. The afternoon slots start about noon, 230pm and 5pm EDT; again give or take 20 minutes. The west coast games get the later slots. Game times won't get decided until CBS decided who it wants to feature at which times.by redGrinch - Other Sports
Re: Alumni in the Pros - March 2008 - 16 years ago
Thomas started... got lifted after the 4th goal... then came back and played the 2nd period and about half of the 3rd before giving way to Auld again. On a similar Caps note, Sasha Pokulok was left off of Hershey's clear list... meaning unless there's some type of roster change (i.e. call-ups to the Caps or injuries), he's ineligible for the playoffs... and if I read it correctly, also the resby redGrinch - Hockey

Re: Duke players get extra year of eligibility - 16 years ago
I sort of understand the media (during the NCAA tournament, for instance) doing the pro-Duke thing to make up for all the negativity last year that they helped stirred up... maybe. But the NCAA, iirc, did not over-react to anything... didn't pressure Duke to cancel its season, or anything. So for the NCAA to take corrective action is a bit odd. Anyone know what happens to players that transfby redGrinch - Other Sports

Re: NHL Rules / Detroit - San Jose - 16 years ago
It's only a penalty if the person who puts it off the ice is (a) in his defensive zone, (b) it goes over the high glass (i.e. if it's just the benches it's not a penalty, but if it's over the glass behing the benches, it is a penalty), (c) it goes over w/o going off the glass first or being otherwise tipped. this rule doesn't irk me at all - and there's not much discretion with the call so it'by redGrinch - Other Sports

Roy 82redGrinchI was at the game... I did not notice Murray all that much (which for a D-man, I usually consider a good thing)... i thought he maybe got 10-12 minutes.. but checking the scoresheet I see he had 18! he kept it simple getting rid of the pucks and was engaging Caps in front of the net. Doesn't have the speed to keep up at times, but seemed to make up for it with good positioning. Aby redGrinch - Hockey
