Enough with the, "See ya, ass-goos!"

I'm not going to get into the whole discussion of whether profanity should be allowed in the rink, or who originally started "You goon!", or how ridiculous it is that some clown thought Section B was saying "You lose!" and the bastardization spread throughout the Cornell crowd...  Instead, can we just agree on SOMETHING, and stick with it?  I could think of a couple suggestions for what we should say, but I figure I'll leave that to everyone else to start out with.  Then, after we've all talked about it, we can put it up for a vote (like the ones at the top of the page), and try to make it the standard at the games.

I do just want to add that even though the word "asshole" can be heard on cable (Comedy Central), it's probably not yet widely accepted in polite company and will continue to get people tossed from the games.  It's happened at every home game thus far this season, so I figure that if they're going to toss us for saying it, it might be a good time to chalk that one up as a loss and ixnay it from the Lynah Vocabulary.

Again, I'm not pushing any one saying over another (although I don't really understand what the opposing thug has "lost" when he takes a seat in the sin bin), but I'm just saying that the current melange of sayings upon a penalty to an opposing player is uncoordinated and ineffective and could probably use a little fixing up.

Interested in hearing anyone's thoughts.

It is "you goon" and it has always been "you goon" and it will always be "you goon". It's not gonna change. People are just plain dumb if they insist on "you lose". We're not changing anything.

Ciao!

on that note...  i'm getting really sick of the dumb-asses who think Mckee is trying to get the crowd started by slapping his stick to let HIS TEAM-MATES know that the power play is over!!!  In fact the clapping that ensues is actually counter productive in that it drowns out McKee and the other warning device from giving the head's up to the defensemen!!!  PLEASE STOP IT STUPID!!!

Actually, what about making up some flyers to pass out at the games, with the correct cheers on them (without the profanity of course)...  Because the sad truth is, that most everyone logging into ELF already knows it's "goon", and the mass of people saying "lose" will never know their follies unless something is done to tell them...

Greg Berge

It has not always been "you goon."  The first few years it was just "see ya," a la Michigan.    "You goon" began with one particular miscreant who deserved it, then the parrots decided to do it all the time.

Things change.  Just because something was a certain way freshman year doesn't mean it's immortal.

When McKee starts to tap his stick to alert the team that the power play is coming to an end, the clapping that ensues is a great cheer in my opinion. Especially when it's countered by us yelling "shut up!" to the opponent's sieve when he does the same for them. There's no way that it "drowns out" the signal. I'm sure the players have enough hockey sense to realize what's going on and to take our clapping as a signal that the power play is over. And Brekke (the assistant coach) can really whistle pretty loud too.

So next time, before you apply the word "dumbass" to the fans trying to make the place a little louder, think about what you say. I think it'd be better to devote your energy into reforming the cheers into teaching the fans in sections D-E some rhythmic clapping skills.

At least just yelling "aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhSEEYA!" with no tag doesn't add to the chaos as people yell different things over it.

that reminds me of part of the evolution of michigans version of the see ya cheer. they have been trying to cut out the profanity now too but when i was there for a game a few years a go it was a year after wildfang (colgate?) came to visit yost. because of his dirty play they added "wildfang, douchebag." just thought that was funny :)

i vote for "you, goon!" since that is how it has always been and it makes sense...
i do: " see ya ____, you goon!" - i just hum while people say asshole ;)

Aside from the issue of whether clapping drowns out the signal (which I'm not convinced it does--I think the only way to be sure would be to hear an answer from a player or coach), I've never been able to understand why people apparently want to celebrate the fact that we've just had an unsuccessful power play.  If anything, it would make more sense to me to applaud a successful penalty kill by the Big Red.

Does that mean we've stopped doing "Ohio State returns to full strength ... and THEY STILL SUCK!"?  (A "suck" cheer which I like, BTW.)

Shorts, it's for the same reason, we -- led by the pep band -- start up an immediate "Let's Go Red!" chant right after the opposition has scored.  Is it in celebration of the other team scoring a goal?  Obviously not.  It's to lend encouragement to the team and maybe get the crowd back into it a little bit.  Same reason for the clap, and starting it in unison with the goalie's tapping of the stick is no crime.

On a more general note, it's embarrassing how much nitpicking about cheers there has been in the opening weeks and months of this season.  Sure it always happens, but it seems there's a lot more "What are those stupid fans doing?  They're not cheering the right way!" type of criticisms and attacks going on.  I guess when the team is 3-2-3 and you're not allowed to criticism the players at all (not that I'm looking for us to), some folks have to turn to "holier than thou" fan arguments.  If somebody next to me wants to say "You lose!" instead of "You goon!" sure I may tell him/her that the line was originally "you goon", and that it may make more sense that way in the context of just having taken a penalty, but if they want to say "you lose," fine.

I know these arguments have probably festered ever since cheers have been created and passed down, but I think in my 4 years here, this is the most cross-fan criticism that I've seen.

Hopefully a few wins will get everyone a little un-wired and we can concentrate on the hockey team a little more.

P.S.  There is one wrong cheer, I guess.  "Dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" ::smashfreak::

I can't recall the last time we've done that cheer at Lynah.  In fact, I'm not sure we've ever done that cheer since I started my time on the hill (since the '99-'00 season).

Is next year here yet?

We did that chant several times during Friday's tie with Bowling Green in Section B.  It was only a couple of us and it didn't seem to catch on.  The problem is, half the people in the section don't seem to know any other cheer aside from "Let's Go Red", which they insist on constantly repeating.  We really have to work on the variety.  Are we UNH or something with the mono-cheer???

DeltaOne81

Okay, okay... let's all calm down and talk about this. I think there's a difference betwen when/how/whether to do a cheer, which is certainly worth discussing... versus simply doing a cheer 'wrong.'

For the latter... Now, if there were people out there who knew the cheer was 'goon' and wanted to do 'lose', that's their choice, but does anyone here actually think that's the case? Isn't it just more likely that they have no idea that a good portion of the crowd has corrupted the words?

Now, if you have an opinion on another cheer, how it's done... you're welcome to discuss it and share your opinion, but let's not be a jackass right off the bat:

You think the people on this board don't know why he taps his stick? You think you can make productive headway by calling us "dumbasses", "counter-productive" and "stupid" in the same paragraph?

I completely agree with Jordan - it's the same idea as starting a "Let's Go Red" after the other team scores. It's to keep the team in it and get ourselve back into it, and let them know that no matter what the results, we're there to cheer them on. Ryan could have just as easily come in saying "I never quite got that. Why are we cheering then? Don't you think it drowns out the point of the tapping?", and we could have had an intelligent discussion instead of a lot of yelling. Everyone watch their tempers. You may think you know a lot about hockey, but that's no real to assume you know everything and that your initial thoughts are always absolutely correct.

Also, I liked the "____ returns to full strength, THEY STILL SUCK" this weekend. You're right it didn't catch on, but give it time. I sure as hell joined in and I think it's worth continuing to try it for a while more.

Lastly, Shahar, were you the one that yelled at everyone to stop chanting 'Let's Go Red', cause if you were, the response of "Let's Go Red..." was perfect :-P. You're right that variety is a good thing, but there's nothing wrong with several rounds of a hearty LGR! Especially when not too much positive is going on in the game yet. If you want some variety, then go ahead and add some. Start something else, make something else up, I don't care... variety is great, but don't yell at your fellow fans and then not contribute something yourself. If you want variety, make it.
