Well, the Yale guy did make a point of skating past his teammates to bang into the Section A glass.

Yeah, that was a dick move.
good lord we spend 60 minutes challenging parentage and casting hexes and they needle back a little and all of a sudden we are concerned with decorum. the whole arena is made of dick moves!

Quote from: The Rancor on November 16, 2025, 12:49:46 PMOverall, a great effort this weekend. I like the plucky, exciting transition game, and the speed. First and second period the Big Red had a relentless fore-check which I loved to see. They gave Yale no quarter.
Stanley hoisting the Yale player with the broken skate blade up by his jersey was hilarious- and that first Yale goal really seemed to piss off Cornell. The third period- as noted by everyone, just wasn't a complete effort, but wasn't terrible either. I'll take any 4 point weekend, even if it's now 6 points.
SO YOU SAW THAT TOO. I wish I had a picture. Was fucking hysterical. Though I thought the guy was hurt, 'cause I don't remember seeing him again.

Quote from: andyw2100 on November 16, 2025, 10:00:21 AMI'm wondering why there needs to be any vinyl that can cause problems if the ice winds up too thin. Why not just go old school and just use paint or dye or whatever it is that used to be used before the vinyl?

For that matter, why not remove all the derp from the ice except the lines, circles, and dots.

Also bring back the perforated red line (for those of us with B&W TVs). I have very very minor sadness to see there's a solid line now, bucking nearly a century of odd but fun trivia.

FWIW I noticed for the first time that Dartmouth had only green on white advertising on their boards. Red and white only at Lynah wouldn't be bad- but blank would be better.

If anything, it proves the crowd is doing its job correctly.

Quote from: Jeff Hopkins '82 on November 15, 2025, 11:43:51 PMTo be fair, it's 50º outside right now and pouring.  So that's going to warm things up inside the rink.  And it was pretty warm inside.  But somebody is going to have to do a serious job of reconditioning the ice in the next week.  Because there are a bunch of things that need work.
Same forecast next weekend pretty much. No women's game though.

I had to wonder from home what the rink air temperature was.  Unless there's some functional problem with the refrigeration system, that must be the biggest factor.
It's really hard for me to imagine that having a game in the afternoon would affect the ice in the evening.  I don't see any complaints about the ice in the evening after the quarterfinal against BU in 2012.  https://cornellbigred.com/news/2012/3/10/WICE_0310121319.aspx

Definitely warm.  Interestingly, partway through the long break, I felt some cold air start blowing on me.  I thought it might have been from the open doors (with all the students leaving), but it was too cold.  Maybe they turned on the air conditioning?

Yeah it's warmer this year than last, I think. My seat is above the tunnel so my understanding is a little warped bc I constantly get air blown on me that's meant for the ice tho. But last year felt worse.

The other thing I was wondering last night was if they thought there was a decent chance that redoing the ice (presumably without scraping) was going to help, when they realized it hadn't helped enough, why not just do that again, and again if necessary? For a long time it looked like they may just throw up their hands and not continue.
1) Vinyl keeps its shape. Especially for sponsorship and league promos, paint would be much more difficult to have "correct" - you'd need someone to painstakingly take the time to paint each item 100% accurately. While it's already cold and icy. And if the ice melts, the paint under it might go as well. Vinyl is much less accident-prone and much more reusable. Now, for example, they might have to rip up the ice (because those black spots are gnarly too), but since it's all vinyl, they just need a few "grunts" to take the vinyl stuff off and put it back on when they fill the ice to an appropriate level. Vs if it was paint, where you'd need a painter to spend hours repainting the Cayuga Health logo.

2) I think the refs really wanted to call it. It definitely felt like they were going to for a while there. But the players and the coaches did not agree to do so, and I assume the ECAC commissioner told the refs they can't call off the game if the players/coaches didn't agree. Interestingly, a bunch of guys went over that exact spot and none of 'em had any issues.

I noticed that, too. And during a stoppage one of the refs skated over it too.

I also wondered when Casey and the Yale coach came out at center ice to chat whether they were considering switching ends mid-period so that neither attacking team would be overly disadvantaged by the bad ice.

The person I was with suggested that maybe the refs had a contract like airline pilots and they exceed their allowable hours.   ;D

"Who are the Chefs?"

Iceberg

Enough has been said about the game but I've been very impressed with Cournoyer. He makes many challenging saves look easy and plays quite technically sound. He also has the best puck playing skills of any goaltender since Mitch Gillam, which helps immensely against forecheckers. That said, I think he's even better in that regard and I would be very surprised if he doesn't get a few assists this season or even an empty net goal.

As for the ice issues, I hope they're fully resolved sooner rather than later. Almost all men's games in January are at Lynah and there is a weekend with two consecutive men and women doubleheaders.

ugarte

Putting stats aside, and not trying to jinx anything, Cournoyer already seems like the goalie with the most raw skill since LeNeveu and we've had an embarrassment of riches at the position.
