Inside Lacrosse just republished this look back at the 1976 championship game between Cornell and Maryland, calling it "the greatest championship game of all time." I was in the stands in Providence that day and would have to agree!

The 1976 game was also excellent because overtime then was a pair of four-minute overtimes, not first-goal-wins. This is the more sensible way to settle a lacrosse match. Not just because Maryland got the first OT goal yet Cornell won by three.

My fondest recall, other than coming back from that early deficit, was the final (I believe) OT goal where French and McEneaney both broke in on the Maryland goalie after French knocked down Frank Urso, one of the game's best middies ever and built like a tall fire hydrant. Cornell's French Connection ran pretty much unmolested toward the goal, McEneaney faked a shot, flipped to French, who buried it.

I still want the OT rule changed, and not just because of Syracuse 15 years ago in the title game. It'd be insane to say first OT bucket wins in basketball. Even the NFL is changing playoff games so both teams get a shot at the ball. So why not lacrosse in playoff overtime?

AFAIK there is no push for that in lax circles.

Biggest current issue is penalties for head contact, like the one on Cascadden that cost us the PSU game.

Agreed.  Lacrosse isn't hockey where goals are relatively few.  In lax, win the face off and you have a good chance of winning the game.

Totally agree with this--I hate sudden death overtime for lacrosse. It makes it harder to sell lacrosse as a "high scoring game" to new fans.

Why in the world did they change it?  Dumb.

Maryland 6, Syracuse 1 midway in Q2 and the announcers just said McCool is keeping Syracuse in it.

Cuse looking lackadaisical early on, UMD sharp.

8-1 now. Maryland and Syracuse are not playing the same game.

Is it wrong I'm pulling for Syracuse?

Nothing wrong with it, but I can't do it. I just want whoever wins to be gassed.

Some guy sat down next to me early in the SU-MD game and asked me who I was rooting for. My reply? "A long overtime game".
"What... is your favorite color?"  "Blue. No, yel--auuuuugh!"
