Trostky is just LARPing again. This obviously has no relation to resisting Nazis.

With that being said, if your point is that the victim changed her tune, well, I don't think that has much bearing on whether she was sexually assaulted. She was not aware of the men inviting their entire frat house into the bedroom, and even beyond that there is the question of her consent under the influence of drugs which the frat gave to her.

It does have a bearing on how the investigation was handled and the need for letting the process play out. We should have learned that from the Duke and UVA cases.

We should let the process play out. But just because Jane Doe consented to a threesome with two guys doesn't mean she consented to sex with a host of other guys.

And at the time she was evidently supportive of the two guys, she hadn't realized yet they had summoned the rest of their frat into the bedroom.

I agree that something MUST be done.  You start.  Tear up your hockey tickets and demand to have your name removed from the season ticket list. ::)

Quote from: Trotsky on October 05, 2026, 04:26:50 PMThe point of campus PD is to protect Cornell from liability arising from students' actions.  HR is not there for you.

Maybe what I want is for campus PD to take "PD" out of their names and just be campus security or something, then.
The name was changed from something like Cornell Public Safety to Cornell University Police while I was there in the early 90's.  I believe the idea was to give them more respect and authority.  Someone else on here may remember more details.
This archived article from 2004 notes that CUPD are peace officers, not police officers: Link.

Article from 2006 notes "almost 16 years" after a name change from peace officer to police officer, so 1990: Link.

CUPD now has full police authority, including arrests, as per the most recent annual safety report. However, they are technically still peace officers, from my understanding.

Sometime while I was an undergrad, so 1992-1996, they announced the name change from "Department of Public Safety" to "Cornell University Police Department." The signs changed, new paint jobs on the cars, and (I'm a little hazy on this) the officers were now allowed to carry firearms. They went from being the people who answered the blue light phones to more of a force who showed up at loud parties and wrote a ton more parking tickets.

upprdeck

when did they start writing parking tickets? they have a whole group who does that outside of the police

If you want slam your head repeatedly into a desk until you lose consciousness, read what Megan Kelley had to contribute to this edifying dialog.

tldr: Jane Doe was down for a gang bang because she's not the type who typically attracts guys so it made her feel pretty.

Yes, I wish so much I was making that up.

This is too stupid to respond to, but for the record I have not given a dollar to Cornell in over 20 years.

Rape isn't bad I guess.

You folks are charmers, I'll give you that.  Frat material, I'd say.

The point, for "those of you incapable of understanding" -- A. Mintz, circa 1989: these fine upstanding undergrads are saying "rape is bad, m'kay," and they'll do anything to stop it short of inconveniencing themselves in the slightest.  Evidently they learned these values from parents like the respondents here, since the majority eLF opinion is you fight evil unless you have to go out of your way.

OK, so far so NYT.  I'm sure everyone who so responds also feels they would be the White Rose if they were in Berlin in 1943.  But the truth is: no, you wouldn't.  You are why shit never changes, because while others suffer it is not, after all, an emergency, until it affects you.  This is exactly what Singer was on about when he said we're all monsters.  A paper I wish I'd never read, since then I've never been able to shake it.

So, like the rest of you assholes, I'm a lazy selfish monster too.  But hey, at least, I'm not a hypocrite.

Kids: don't be like us.  And for God's sake don't listen to your elders when they tell you to be sensible in the face of evil.  And yeah, I know, you will.  Cornellians have shall we say a very high frequency of this type of virulence, and it's why nothing will ever get fixed.  But now you've been told, so maybe on your death bed you'll think "I prolly should have listened to that handsome man."

This is a horrific event that's shaken the university. Any discussion about it deserves respect. You're one of the oldest posters here. Stop trying to make everything about you and grow up.

It is a terrible event -- terrible enough to deserves a serious response.  People should approach this with the gravity it deserves and not retreat back to their comfortable hypocrisies which will result in nothing changing.

The threat of rape emanating from frat row was taken as read in the 1980s.  It was already an old saw in the 1950s.  And every year in between.  And nothing happens.  Why is that?

Shelve your tots and pears and address the real issue: there is a subset of young males on our campus who have been socialized that women are their playthings.  Not that they needed it: they took to the message easily enough.  And we all knew these guys going back to high school and even before.  They're a type.  "Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand."  We all knew these douches and gave them a wide berth.  But why were they there at all?  Money?  Jock ability?  They sure as shit weren't students.

Until we decide to blackball them from any more reindeer games, this will keep happening.  It's exactly like flooding society with guns.  What do you expect to happen?

Meanwhile, the bugs are scurrying out from under the stones.

QuoteEarlier this month, a captain on the school's football team posted, "Free the Cornell 7," on Instagram. The "Cornell 7" has been used to describe the seven students accused of gang raping a Cornell University student at a fraternity party in 2024.

More than 200 Piner students staged a walkout Friday to protest the lack of accountability that the student faced for his post.

Plenty more where he came from.  I wonder how they vote...

SSDD.

How come when you report a burglary people believe you, but not a rape?

QuoteIf she really was raped, why didn't she speak up earlier? Why did she get drunk? Why was she wearing such a short skirt? Why did she walk home by herself?

God, it's exhausting, isn't it? Every time a story about a woman being raped becomes headline news, the same pattern repeats without fail. People accuse the woman of asking for it. They question her motives; they scrutinize her looks; they attack her character. And without fail, she is punished for speaking up.

It happened to Christine Blasey Ford when she accused Brett Kavanaugh, then a supreme court nominee, of assaulting her when they were both teenagers in the 1980s. Ford and her family reportedly had to flee their home because of threats and harassment.

According to her lawyers, her email was hacked and she was impersonated online. Her entire life was turned upside down. Meanwhile, Kavanaugh was praised by Donald Trump and now has a lifetime appointment on the supreme court.

It happened with E Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of sexually assaulting her back in 1996. Trump said Carroll was not his "type" and "totally lying". His lawyer asked Carroll why she didn't scream during the alleged attack and why she didn't go to the police at the time. Carroll's life was upended and the Trump administration opened a criminal investigation into her.

Now we're seeing the cycle repeat with the woman known as Jane Doe in the Cornell gang-rape case. According to her attorney, Thomas Giuffra, Doe is receiving threats from people who have discovered her identity and is terrified for her safety. Doe was even the victim of a swatting episode this week, a form of harassment where someone places a false call to emergency services with the goal of sending armed officers to the victim's location. Giuffra told CNN that officers pointed weapons at Doe's family after a fake tip about someone "killing people in the house" on Tuesday evening. "If you had a trigger-happy cop, or somebody had done the wrong thing, somebody could have ended up dead," Giuffra said.

Nobody ended up dead on that particular occasion, but Doe's character is systematically being assassinated. "What attracts women to those parties – late at night, like Jane Doe – to walk alone to a fraternity house and take her chances?" Caitlin Flanagan tut-tutted in the Free Press. "What she's really looking for is a man. And she has no idea how to find a good one." The underlying message here? She should have known better than to go to a frat party. Silly little girl: she was asking for it.

Rightwing commentator Megyn Kelly, who has been vocal about her experience of sexual harassment at Fox News and should really know better, went even further and attacked Doe's looks. "No one will even consider the possibility that this woman made a decision to get it on with four men total, not seven, and enjoyed it because, I'm just going to be honest, she's not the most attractive gal," Kelly said on a recent episode of her podcast. "She's extremely beefy in like her arms and her legs. She has a whole video online talking about her cankles. And she possibly enjoyed being admired. This is how women make these mistakes."
