And I won't do any hugging, so if you see me at Lynah DO NOT try to scam a hug out of me. My sister is much more of a loose canon but she's an adult, so.

I hereby pledge that if I post a positive comment about the team, even if it's: "those away uniforms are really red," I will make sure it is surrounded by plenty of screeds about how the team sucks.

And Bearlover, for all your negativity, you make insightful comments about hockey, so thanks for that.

The women's team is making me super excited too! Not a fan of lax (yet) but I do have a discount code from the Boulevard event to burn... should probably go watch a lacrosse game and see how it goes.

Yes you should. I saw my first lacrosse game when I was a Cornell undergraduate and wound up playing intercollegiate lacrosse on a club team in graduate school. Besides being great fun, getting me into the best shape of my life, and teaching me so much about teamwork, lacrosse taught me much about other sports because it combines elements from so many: basketball, hockey, & soccer to name a few.

I'll have to check when I've got free weekends then. Any intel on which home game(s) would be the best to watch?

Team's awful, we're never going to be good again, everyone sucks, and if the team doesn't win 15-0 they're a blight upon humanity. Of course.

At some point, what does the complaining give you? Genuinely. If you're going to go on longwinded rants every single week about some twenty-somethings underperforming in the sharp shoes on ice sport and saying how much you hate the team and how you've given up... what does it change?

You're not going to win every year. You're not going to go undefeated every year Because Cornell or Because Schafer or whatever. Maybe last year was an overperformance that set the bar too high. Maybe this year is uniquely bad because goaltending or injuries or sickness or defense or limp powerplay or whatever it is. It's probably a bit of both. We can't predict the future and whether we'll be terrible next season. There are reasons we might be (Shane leaving with no succession plan) and reasons we might not (the resurgence of the skaters). Even if we're bottom of the ECAC, I'll be at Lynah every home weekend, rooting for my guys and hoping they do win.

I'm not asking for a "hugbox". I think there's definitely room to have open debates and discuss things and be more pessimistic or more optimistic. But sometimes I read these posts and I genuinely wonder whether some of us are still fans of the team or if they just like to watch the team fail so they can gloat that they were "right" about something. It's like the wins mean nothing and the losses mean everything.

I could complain. There are definitely reasons to complain! I just choose not to, because... no offense, I have better things to worry about than whether Castagna is washed or something (even though it feels like he takes a big knock every single weekend and I would be surprised if he was playing at even 90% prior to the injury on Saturday).

I watch hockey to escape from my problems for a few hours. Not to give myself more of them. I watch hockey to get out of the house and talk to people who share a common interest and cheer for my school and my team. To see my hockey players make crazy plays and sometimes score, to remind the other goalie that he is in fact a sieve, to enjoy myself on weekend nights before I go back to wanting to cry over Pennoyer v Neff.

Life is miserable. Hockey doesn't have to be. If that doesn't make me a real fan, then so be it, I guess.

It goes beyond that. The best sports stories aren't about how some team got all the best draft picks, never made a mistake, and cruised to a trophy. They're about overcoming adversity and beating the odds. It's about how, no matter how down you are, there is a chance things will be better tomorrow if you keep putting the effort in. Because sometimes, just sometimes, that Hail Mary pass works.

I know we all had high hopes for this season, and I know that Schafer's retirement has amplified the loss. There's plenty to criticize and be frustrated about. But this has gone way past misery loving company. It's now just wallowing in despair.

The sad thing is, we're all supposed to be on the same side. We complain when the guys on the ice can't work together as a team, but then we take out our frustration by sniping at each other. Can we really expect a bunch of 18-22 year olds to outdo us in maturity?

Funny.  I was thinking the same about you.

Why can't you take the distaff posters' sage advice?  Even when you're dealing with the most self-important Pick Me dingleberry with delusions of urbanity barely slip-covering his eggshell narcissism, we are all Faithful and we should 69 in the common love of Our Brave Lads.

This is sad.  There's nothing wrong with criticism, and being glum, annoyed, frustrated at high hopes being dashed.  I have felt it all myself.  It's the self-delusional preening, the proclamations of "I/he was right" when "he" wasn't, the smug assertions of "proof" where none exists, the bombast -- I could go on.  At best, I'm just going to assume some people have no clue they act that way.

I didn't recall if that was the plan.  This is how the season played out. It wasn't clear to me that Howe was the guy.  It wasn't until Shane got his chance that they ran with someone.

I know this (and many of your other posts) are thinly veiled swipes at me. Pretty tiring at this point TBH. Also hypocritical, given the only person who asserted things matter-of-factly and dismissively was you. I'm over this argument, but if you're going to pop back in every few days and take another swipe at me then I'm gonna respond. So maybe just don't do that, and we can finally put this to bed.
