And somehow Cornell still couldn't come away with a win

Of course. They're getting ready for the fall.

Would be nice to have a decent football team this year.
It's the Ivies.  None of us have had a decent football team since the 60s.

To me, decent means being competitive in the Ivy and Patriot Leagues.  A low bar, to be sure.

Pretty spot on. Dartmouth went 9-0 in 1970, won the Lambert Trophy as the best football team (any size) in the Northeast, and was ranked 14th in the final AP poll.

As of the 1982 season, the Ivies were relegated to Division I-AA, now known as the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). There have been a number of years when the best Ivy team would have fared well in the FCS playoffs if only the Ivy presidents hadn't picked football as the one NCAA sport where the team can't take part in the playoff system.

That's what I meant: competitive in the Ivy League, fun to watch, etc.

That's what I hope to see. A better offense, and a defense that doesn't collapse late in the games, and less dumb penalites as has been the norm for the last decade under Archer.  I realize the new staff will need some time to recruit the players for their new system though.

Tough audience.:-D
We still have the Ivies' best homecoming fireworks. Friday 9/27 before the Yale game. Maybe I'll stream The Miracle Worker to get in a positive mood.

Sorry, but I just don't understand the fireworks show. I've gone to a lot of homecoming weekends, and I've never had a desire to go to that. Maybe save the money they literally set on fire and save it for a Schoellkopf renovation that's being discussed in another thread.

I had the same complaint and thought, but was told the fireworks are funded by a private donation specifically for that use. I have no way of knowing if this is true.

It's fall. No exams or papers due yet. The weather may be warm. Women in tank tops. Guys with lingering summer tans. Circa 9 pm no one is yet falling-down drunk. What's not to love? And families and kids love it, too. Ditto alums who remember the feeling of being free of academic burdens for another week or two. Plus the picnic-party-rides next day in the Schoellkopf parking lot, alumni tailgates and (they put the rest of us to shame) the CBAA tailgate.

If you want to be gloomy and borderline suicidal, one should accept the offer from Chicago or Columbia.

Local Motion

Speaking of Cornell football...............I spoke with some players during the Cornell vs. Penn lax game on Friday evening and they seemed super excited about the new Coach Dan Swanstrom.   Did any posters watch the spring game this past weekend and any take away regarding the team, new offense, defense, etc.?

Poor last paragraph.

What's not to love? Herding people into a stadium to watch a 15 minute explosion. Meh. Not fun to me. How about having a couple bands play music on the Arts or Ag quad? Much more communal and more open for opportunities for mingling, running into old friends (or old horn-dudes like you ogling students in tank/crop tops, apparently).

I love fireworks. It's been a minute since I've seen the homecoming ones but if you get out to a Syracuse Mets or Binghamton rumbleponies game on a Friday or Saturday night you'll see a ridiculous fireworks show and there's no better way to spend a warm evening.

Has anyone reading this ever bought commercial fireworks on the order of what is used (blown away) at the Syracuse Mets or whatever minor league team?  I have often wondered why it is done there as it wouldn't seem to sell many tickets and can't be less than a thousand dollars or so.  I guess those teams have money to burn.  Does Cornell buy a carbon offset when they blow things up like this? ::whistle::

upprdeck

1K  more like 100K for  a show like that

Image if that private entity put that money towards a donation pool to renovate Schoellkopf to modern standards rather than a mass of gunpowder that goes up in smoke.

There used to be a homecoming parade, too. Surely that's cheaper and more participatory and engaging in the student community.

The Lehigh Valley Ironpigs also have weekend fireworks.  It does actually seem to get butts into the seats.  So I'd have to think it's cost effective.

The Tri-City Valley Cats also use fireworks as a draw and I'd love to know their cost for semi-regular fireworks for the season.  I agree that they must think it puts more butts in the seats.  I just don't see it.
