San Jose's farm teams are the Cleveland Barons (AHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) and Richmond Renegades (ECHL). Excpect to see him with one of them.

This will be interesting.  We have never had a defenseman with a significant NHL career.  I would think Doug has a good shot, but Ratushny also looked great and he got barely a sniff of the bigtime.

Does anybody know the state of SJ's blueline, including their minors?

Doug said SJ has 5 good returning D, and they'll be looking for someone to fill the last spot, so depending on how training camp goes, he's got a shot at it.

If you look at SJs webpage, they list only 5 active defensemen.  You'd have to think those guys are coming back, just like Doug says.  

Unfortunately, 4 of the 5 are left-hand shots, like Doug, so that's one stroke against him making the 6th slot.  Also, if you look at their "developmental" players, it struck me as a disproportionate percentage of defensemen on that list.  

Interestingly, one of them, I forget who, had over 300 PIMs in 75 games with Columbus.  You don't see many D-men with PIMs like that, even in the minors.

The other problem is that SJ has 2 other incoming defensemen who could be right around, if not ahead of, Doug on the depth chart: Christian Ehrhoff, a european player, and Tom Preissing. Here's hoping he can put on a show in training camp, or in the AHL, and get a shot soon.

Yep.  Coming out of college, I would have bet quite a lot that Manderville's and Ratushny's NHL tenures would be reversed.  Kent adapted and became a fantastic defensive player.  Dan did very well in the minors -- I remember picking up a Fort Wayne Komets broadcast one night and the announcers just went on and on about his dominant play -- but he never made it with the big club.  Perhaps there was an injury?

His brother suffered a pretty bad injury, no?  I wonder if that might have an effect on Dan...

As I recall, Dan had injuries to both wrists during his '92 Olympic stint and didn't see much playing time.  I had thought he had similar injuries as a pro but am not sure about that.

And yes, his brother Greg suffered serious, ultimately fatal, injuries in a car accident shortly before he would have been a freshman at Cornell (92-93 season).
