According to a tweet from @CornellSports that my daughter forwarded to me, this is the first time both teams have been ranked number one at the same time.

Not exactly:

Cornell is No. 1 in both USCHO Division I men's and women's polls. The last time that happened was back on Oct. 27, 2014, when Minnesota was first in both polls.

For all schools that play hockey, I suspect an event like this is rarer than hen's teeth.

Agreed.  Roughly half (33) of the men's D1 schools have women's teams.  And I'd bet that most of them haven't even had a sniff at #1.

I have found a great deal of correlation between ice temperature at a specific point in a game* and the success of certain teams. This information will not come cheap, let alone free, since it's based on physical evidence and hard data.
* it also factors in the amount of rocker and bevel in the skate blades of key skaters.

I've always wondered about this possibility, since it seems certain rinks seem to have a hold over us. That said, I find it hard to believe it's not something already measured or somehow taken into consideration.

From "The Poison Ivy in the Ivy League," Jan. 2, 1967

Harkness' boys at RPI tended to be slower than a lot of other teams, and it seemed that whenever a really fast-skating team came up to Troy the arena would get terribly warm, so warm that the ice often became soft and slushy. At RPI they said it was probably only coincidence or a faulty thermostat, but the soft ice did serve wonderfully well to slow fast skaters down to RPI speed. (There were a few smiles visible at rinkside this year when Cornell's fast-skating outfit played its second game of the season against RPI at Troy and Visiting Coach Harkness complained about the excessive heat.)
