Quote from: David Harding on January 05, 2026, 04:18:48 PMThanks for the compilation.  I'll check back the next time I'm in town.  A few comments:
The Heights is about 20 minutes from Myron Taylor by TCAT, but it's not on the way to anything except Lansing.
Purity is still in business.  We had lunch there in July.  Many people prefer its ice cream to others in town.
I'll have to check out Cayuga Creamery.  The DeWitt building was my junior high school 1962-1965, and I've patronized many of it establishments over the years since it was repurposed, including Moosewood and Cafe DeWitt.
We've had some good meals at the Strand Cafe, just east of Restaurant Row, over the last few years.

Cayuga's good. Recommend it.

Looking at the Heights and wow is it expensive. Unfortunately I don't know if my palate is refined enough to enjoy anything on the menu there... or at least, all of it looks Suspicious enough and while I eat out a lot, I don't have the budget to drop $50 on an entree I don't think I'll like... would have to go with someone who knows how to eat fancy fancy and doesn't mind finishing a plate :')

Strand is fancy, but edible fancy. I always figured it was only for Canopy people though. Will have to drop by.
You questioned whether there were any $$$$$ restaurants in Ithaca. :D  Many years ago a Sun review of a restaurant that closed a while ago said that it was the kind of place that you asked your parents to take you to when they were in town and wanted to give you a treat.
We've been drawn to the Strand a couple of times on Mondays when most of the restaurants on the Commons or Restaurant Row are closed.

It's been on the list to try for a bit now.

I hit up Village Taqueria in Dryden yesterday, finally (the TCAT...) and it was honestly disappointing. Need to mark it down in the spreadsheet.

Also taking suggestions for places to eat that aren't in Ithaca proper, now that I have some spare time to make long bus trips.

I know you said you are a pizza snob, but when they are on top of their game NY Pizzeria in Tburg is quite good. I also like the pizza at Salt Point in Lansing.

And not sure if there is a bus stop nearby, but State Eatery in Newfield is pretty decent, though it looks like they are closed for the season.

I don't like pizza all that much AND I was raised in Jersey... perfect storm. But I'll add it to the list. Still haven't "officially" tried the pizzerias in town (probably have had most of them at catered law school events though). Heard good things about Franco's in Ithaca. But adding the Trumansburg spot to the list of stuff to try :)

Sorry, was editing my post to add a couple more. Franco's is good IMO and it's easier than going up to Tburg if you just want a quick slice.

All good! I'm mostly kinda just missing Geneva where I'd get on a bus and go like 45 minutes between cities for groceries and stuff. Since I have some time before classes start, I want to see if I can hit a few spots that I wouldn't usually be able to get to.

Salt Point I have heard very good stuff about too. Need to peek at the menu...

The Inn at Taughannock Falls has historically been extraordinary (and accordingly expensive), maybe the one place in the area I would've considered genuine fine dining (Heights never quite got there for me, either). Haven't been there in literally decades though, so YMMV. I hope it's just as good as I remember it.

Went there for my daughter's graduation in 2017 and I recall that we enjoyed it. Still probably has the best charm of any place in the Ithaca area.

Can you get by bus from Ithaca to Corning? There are a couple places in their little downtown that are what Ithaca restaurants should strive to be.

The problem is, if I do not leave Corning by 1.40 PM (to get to Ithaca by 4.30 PM), I'm stuck there overnight. That means I need to leave Ithaca at 7.18 AM to get to Corning by 9.30 AM...

I was thinking about doing a Corning run because of the Museum of Glass, but... it's just too damn risky, plus means I have to be ready to go by 7 AM, plus means I'd probably only be able to do lunch in Corning, and if I get sick on the way home I'm screwed.

So it's really only viable if I have someone with a car. Which... law students are a little too uptight to go on random all-day adventures like that.

And speaking of food, the Downtown Alliance is doing a Comfort Food Trail from Jan 16 to Feb 1 where by going to certain places and eating certain dishes, you'll be able to enter for chances to win gift cards :) Will give me an excuse to try some new stuff!

We had a quite good meal at The Inn at Taughannock Falls last July.  It's certainly an interesting venue.  Unfortunately, I don't think you can get closer by public transportation than an hour's hike away.

I've lost count of how many times I've been to the Corning Glass Museum -- it was where we took out-of-town visitors when I was a kid -- but it's worth a visit if you find someone willing to drive. You might be able to use the shops to persuade someone to go with you?

why not just rent a car and skip the bus and save time?
