Note to Hockey Gods: Judy also likes to enjoy the day after her birthday.

(Hockey Gods can be quite literal, you know.  9pm start, maybe an overtime or two...)

Why don't we make it "I'd like to have a great birthday and the next 3.5-4 weeks?" That should cover it, right?

I'd be fine if the hockey gods allowed her to enjoy the entirety of her birthday weekend, Friday-Sunday.
I celebrate Judy's birthday too, if the hockey gods care about that sort of thing.

So, we're all celebrating Judy's birthday.

Are there any Michigan-specific chants/taunt that the Faithful have coined during our six games against Michigan for the less important event on Judy's birthday? They will be good both for Green Bay and The Garden (fingers crossed).

Our Pep Band has played the Michigan fight song for Notre Dame in the past.  I would expect that to be reversed at Green Bay.  More importantly, is the Pep Band trip being organized?
As far as cheers, I expect our contingent to be very small.  Mostly we'll need to make sure the Big Red know we are there.  If we do any taunting cheers, the Michigan fans will likely think we're doing Michigan cheers anyway, since we taught them how to cheer.  CCHA droputs?

Actually, the whole "play the rival fight song" thing began at the famous 1991 NCAA series at Michigan.  I happen to know the guy who was the Pep Band's Head Manager back then.  The way I remember him telling it was that the day after the Game 1 comeback victory, they were hanging around in Ann Arbor, bored waiting for the game to start, when some of them wandered into a local music shop.  They found an arrangement to Michigan State's fight song and bought it out-of-pocket and played it that night for Game 2.  They were nearly booed out of Yost.

Yes, the band will be there.

I like it, but I'm not sure that has quite the requisite zing or sarcasm considering that Michigan admits that they stole them from Cornell in 1991. They laugh about it, acknowledge it, and have screened shirts that read "Michigan Hockey: Cheers invented at Cornell, Perfected at Michigan."

When we played Wisconsin in the basketball tournament 2 years ago, a band member arranged the music to the Minnesota fight song.  I'm pretty sure the same guy arranged the Wisconsin fight song for the women's game against Minnesota.  He is probably going to Green Bay, so I assume we can expect similar shenanigans.

I like the idea of Notre Dame's or Ohio State's fight song over Michigan State's fight song. Notre Dame's has the added bonus of being recognizable to most fans. Michigan State is a rival of Michigan, but Wolverines do not harbor the same level of vitriol toward Michigan State as they do against Notre Dame or Ohio State.

Love that! We could respond to "ugly parents" (what they chant at the opposing team's fans after the opposition scores a goal), "ugly girlfriends." It plays off the intra-Big Ten joke that nine out of ten Big Ten girls are attractive, the tenth goes to Michigan. Most other retorts to that have too many syllables.

I think it would be great if the pep band played Ohio State's Across the Field when Michigan takes the ice when/if Cornell plays Michigan at The Garden, if not Friday. The line "Let's win that old conference now" is most commonly changed to "let's beat Michigan now."

We could have used that against Union.

I think Without a Peer characterizes Union's one chant well: "[silence] [silence] U!"

Maybe for certain other sports.  For football, yeah, few things are better than Michigan-Ohio State.  Hockey is different.  The fact is that Ohio State and Notre Dame, other than blips in the past decade, have never been good enough to challenge Michigan's regional supremacy in hockey.  Michigan State has.  There's a reason that those two schools have played to record-setting crowds not once, but twice.

Need further evidence about the hockey rivalry?

QuoteLuke Moffatt didn't mince words when talking about the Michigan hockey team's rivalry with Michigan State.

"You want to kill them," the sophomore forward said bluntly on Monday. "You hate them."

Those sentiments might be a little extreme. But all of the Wolverines take the underlying meaning of Moffatt's words to heart: the game against the school down the highway is circled in red on the calendar every year. It's a big deal.

I realize. I am a student currently at a Big Ten institution, so I understand the intraconference rivalries and to which sports they pertain generally. However, the newest generation of Children of Yost, I know a few, state that Michigan State hockey is "more cute than something to loathe." The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry was particularly big back in the 1990s when Cornell played at Yost because it was before that era that Michigan State had dominated the rivalry. Michigan was often embarrassed with hordes from East Lansing being able to sell out Yost and have the Wolverines play before a crowd donned in green. I will agree that Ohio State might not be the wisest choice for hockey because other than when Ryan Kesler was there, Ohio State hockey has been basically irrelevant. Most current Michigan fans forget the recent era in modern hockey history when Michigan State, not Michigan, was the dominant hockey program in the state. My comment was one merely that we should consider the importance that our opponent currently gives to a given rival. Also, is Michigan State's fight song that recognizable? I know to Wolverine ears it will be, but will our fans get the joke?
