Yale head coach Tom Williams resigned today over his misrepresentation on his application that he was a Rhodes scholar. He never actually applied...

There's a point where the punishment and forgiveness lines cross on the graph.

I wish he had offered his resignation with a full apology, and Yale had rejected the former and accepted the latter.

The article also mentions that he claimed to have participated in a 49'ers training camp.  That too was false.  It's possible that there are more serious issues not being shared with the media in exchange for a quiet departure.

The football coach is a faculty member. Fudge the resume and you're shown the door.

This faculty member was 0-3 vs. Harvard and 2 games above .500 in his three years in New Haven.

I don't understand how people think they can get away with this kind of fabrication.  Haven't they ever heard of fact-checking?

Tim Taylor coached Yale for exactly eleventy-seven years.

It was actually more than just the Rhodes issue....he also pumped up his time with the 49ers, stating he was on the practice squad....it was right in the Cornell program of two years ago when Yale came in for Austin's home debut....and Williams, in his resignation statement, also "qualified" that aspect of his resume.....

If it were just the Rhodes Scholar issue, he may have been able to finesse it because what exactly is a "Rhodes Scholar candidate?"  You could probably claim that being told by your school to apply -- if that was actually true -- is enough to be a candidate.  Sloppy and embarassing, but maybe not fatal.

Throw in the flat out incorrect statement about the Niners and you lose any benefit of the doubt.

It took three years before anyone bothered to check the facts.

Blame it on Witt.....if he wasn't a real Rhodes scholar candidate Williams would probably still be cruising along.....Williams' resume should have read "Almost Rhodes Scholar Candidate" and "Almost San Francisco 49er"

Williams did, however, invent the Internet, didn't he?
