Quint Kessinich has us at No. 7, Stony Brook at No. 14, and says of Cornell: "The Big Red bounced back from their Virginia loss with an excellent Ivy League win at Yale. Cornell travels to Stony Brook on Tuesday in a huge game. Tewaaraton nominee Rob Pannell already has 32 points, but Cornell has been outscored 33-24 in the second half." Of Stony Brook: "The Seawolves were upset by Towson on March 19. Kevin Crowley is netting 4.4 points per game, but the complementary parts aren't clicking. An at-large bid hinges on a Cornell win." Thanks for putting the pressure on, Quint. [edit add: The Quint comment on the at-large bid is about SB's chances of a bid. It's the paragraph about Stony Brook being ranked No. 14.]

This, of course, is nonsense on Quint's part.  Last year Cornell lost two Ivy games (one of those to Dartmouth), to Syracuse, to Virginia, and to Princeton in the Ivy tournament and still received a #7 seed.  A loss to Stony Brook would certainly hurt, but I don't think it's make or break.

Seriously. This is lacrosse. It's not who you beat but who you schedule. ::rolleyes::
I also can't 100% tell if he means an at large for SBU or CU is riding on the game.

Pretty sure he's referring to Stony Brook's chance of an at-large bid.  This is their only other high profile game (the other being an 8-7 loss to Virginia early in the year).  Their schedule is very underwhelming from here on out.

You are not giving him much credit for writing clearly. Why would he say "a Cornell win" to refer to "a win over Cornell"? And does Stony Brook have even the slightest chance at an at-large bid even if they beat Cornell?

I agree it's poorly written, but I have little doubt that he's referring to Stony Brook's chances for an at-large bid, not Cornell's

Especially as it's in Quint's Stony Brook write-up.

The bigger oddity in the polls is Princeton's fall from 7 to 11 to also-got-votes in the first 3 March polls. I think they won't stay that low for long.

Their best player from last year, middie Mike Chanenchuk, Ivy rookie of the year, is out of school. He broke his collarbone in fall ball and withdrew for the year. (I hope he still finished fall semester. That's a lot of tuition money to toss away.) Princeton says he is working to rejoin the team (next season). He also deferred a year before entering Princeton because of a bad back.

Thomas Schreiber, the Inside Lacrosse #2 entering freshman (Chanenchuk's HS teammate), was reported banged up at Penn but did play. He could be the next Rob Pannell. Tyler Fiorito, the All-America goalie, played. It's hard to tell if the Tigers' injury list is worse than normal or just typical for lacrosse this year.

Meanwhile this is a crucial week for Cornell with Stony Brook tonight (on the Guyland) and Saturday hosting Penn (1 pm).

Isn't it better English to say "on Guyland"?::dribble::

I was taught the Lawn part of Lawn Guyland was implied and never spoken. On was not a substitute for Lawn, but I see how it could grown on you. Driftng slightly, I believe the correct pronunciation still has an R at the end of Maria. Good Catholics would say, "Ave Mariar." Also while most living west of the Hudson would seek change for a quarter, in New York City and points east, you'd ask "change of a quarter." Or quartah, loaning the ending R to Maria. Fortunately we all pronounce Screw BU similarly and correctly.

The thought of calling any of this "better English" - mind-boggling.

The Cornell Deskbook, circa 1978, spelled it Lawn-Goy-Lind, and also referred to it as "The Oylind."
