Syracuse Article on Riley Nash

An interesting article in today's Post-Standard on Riley and his try-out for Canada's juniors. Most interesting to me is his take on what it might take for him to be successful in the NHL

Nash isn't trying to outshine anyone. He just wants to look dirtier than everyone else. As in,doing the grunge work that gets him a job as a defensive specialist on the prestigious squad's checking line.


"I don't think I have to change a whole lot," said the 6-foot-1, 178-pound Nash. "They have a lot of offensive guys going into camp. If they need me as a checker, that's what I'll be. I'll just try to play the way I've been playing here."

and maybe why he likes being at Cornell for now.

But at a young age Nash, who grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia, figured out his game needed something of an insurance policy for the time when he would be measured against players even flashier than him.


"I really enjoyed scoring goals when I was younger. When I grew up, I realized I'm not going to score three, four goals a game," he said. "You have to shut them (opponents) down. I keep my feet moving, wait until he makes a mistake and attack. A lot of people don't approach it (defense) the right way. They won't take the body. You can't get deterred by anything."

It leaves me very hopeful.

I enjoyed this part:

During an informal preseason practice, Brendon didn't appreciate Riley's aggressiveness. One thing led to another, brothers will be brothers, and, well, the two of them went at it just as they did several times as youngsters.

"I bumped into him. He slashed me. I wasn't a big fan of what he did," Riley said. "It was just one of those things. There's definitely a time you want to land a few blows. But you don't want to hurt him. We had a few laughs later.

"It's a tough answer," Nash said. "I'm not going to go just when they (the Oilers) ask me to go. I don't feel I need to go and bounce around in the minors for a few years. Cornell is a nice place to be."

This seems in line with what I heard from an inside source that told me that Riley would most likely leave when his brother graduated (which would mean we'd get one more year of both Nash brothers).

I bet the bonus worked well for him...unless he invested it in AIG or Legg Mason Value Trust.
