Also agreed that part of why Huggy Bear is out of favor is because of the great logo it replaced.  I don't think Huggy Bear is all that good, though, partly because my first (and lasting) impression of it was not, "Grrrowl!  I'm a fierce bear with a C around me," it was "Grrrowl!  I'm stuck in a big red vice!"
Agreed. The angular insides of the 'C' make a big difference as well.
I think my problem with the Cornell logo is not that its bad. Huggy Bear really isn't a bad logo..

But that it replaced Leaning mean bear. The most awesome logo of all time.
I agree.  Smug bear was a unique logo in that it expressed confidence instead of snarling violence.

We are talking about logos and design - that is exactly the kind of thing I'd have wanted someone to point out.

Now that it is pointed out, I prefer the C in Huggy Bear but the bear in Leaning Bear. And the bear is much more important.

What would the weights of C importance and bear importance relative to each other be?

Seeing as how the bear is the unofficial mascot and a lot of uniforms and playing surfaces still just feature the elegant, simple 'C'? 90 percent to the C, 10 percent to the bear.

Not exactly unique.  Yale retired their pissed off bulldog - but who copied who?  Sorry that I couldn't find a pristine PO'd bulldog.  Here's a kids puzzle version of their old logo.

"When we came off, [Bitz] said, 'Thank God you scored that goal,'" Moulson said. "He would've killed me if I didn't."

But Bulldogs always look pissed off, they can't help their facial muscles.

A bear exuding cool, calm, collected confidence? Now that's unique.

I gather you've never seen a Bulldog smile?  To a doglover, it's quite a pleasant sight.  :-D

Oh, and my HS mascot was a bulldog.

I think I have some kuna left if you feel inspired to do a Flickertails logo in anticipation of Saturday's final.  (Or possibly some forint.  I unfortunately don't have any zloty to spare after being ripped off by an unlicensed cab en route to the Warsaw airport.)
