Coach Schafer's Three Goals

Schafer set three goals when he took over as coach in 1995:

1. Beat Harvard
2. Secure Home Ice
3. Pack Lynah Rink

So, how have we been doing over the past couple years?

1. 1-4 record against Harvard, including two losses on the last night of the regular season and a semifinal loss in Albany.

2. Backed into the #4 slot in 2007, which didn't prevent Cornell from being swept at home by Quinnipiac. In 2008, had the chance to secure a bye with a win over Harvard in the final weekend.

3. Looks very good on paper, with Lynah at 98% of capacity for the season, but probably more like 90% when you factor in lackluster student attendance.

There's no doubt that Schafer has done great things for Cornell hockey, but maybe we should renew our focus on these goals from 13 years ago. I'm tired of losing to Harvard.

scored from the crease, eh?  I know I never scored on the ice, either.

The forecast calls for rain on Saturday.  Maybe there will be some post season excitement at the rink after all.

The Ceremony

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's 202nd Commencement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. at the Harkness Field.
In the event of severe weather, the ceremony will be moved inside the Houston Field House. Please note that the campus video sites will not be open unless the ceremony is moved inside.

Um, how about winning the NCAA?  I don't care about Harvard, since it's not a mutual rivalry (i.e., the average member of the Harvard community couldn't give less of a damn about beating Cornell in hockey).  It takes two to tango, but we're the only one on the dance floor.  I'd take three losses to Harvard and an NCAA championship any day of the week.

We've shown that we can win the conference. Been there, done that. Time to set our sights higher. And Schafer is the man to take us there.

And as far as that goes, Schafer can't do that all by himself. He first would need a little less incompetence on the part of the Athletic Department in terms of making the games fun for students again. I'm sure that we've been over this topic time and again, but making it so hard for people to watch the games with their friends certainly can't help. For A, B, D, and E (and perhaps F and G?), go to general admission, perhaps by section. Early arrivers would be rewarded, and latecomers punished.  Overall, loosen the rules a bit to make it seem less of a late 1930s Germany atmosphere.

Just from personal experience (saw both sides of the series this year), the rivalry against Clarkson seems to have more life to it. But somehow a rivalry with an ivy league leader sounds sexier than one with an almost-Canadian former tech school.

you'd be surprised how far away Canada is from Potsdam with the way they are at the Border now.

And from the CCT side of things Cornell makes a better rival than SLU for many reasons. Small School vs. Large School. Focused School with one or two areas of excellence vs. a school with everything. Middle of nowhere vs. somewhere. Blue Collar vs. White Collar. not even to mention the different styles of play as of late, balanced offense and defense vs. smothering defense.

not to mention you get to hear the two best pep bands in the ECACH.
