"...Nieuwendyk, who plans to continue living in South Florida with his wife, Tina, and their three children..."  (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/hockey/panthers/sfl-sppanspec07dec07,0,7677299.story?coll=sfla-sports-panthers)

Ithaca Journal article:

http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061207/SPORTS/612070353

Quote from: Ithaca JournalHe, his wife, Tina, and their three children have a home in Ithaca.

So, they have a home here...the Sun Sentinel says they intend to live in Florida.  Maybe they'll spend significant time here, though with kids, if they "live in" Florida they'll likely be there during the school year and not much available for informal assistant coaching.

The Sun-Times says that they are going to live in Florida. The Journal implies that they are going to live in Ithaca. I think the only thing we know is that they don't want to pull their kids out of school in the middle of the school year.

My impression is that they had a lake house in the Ithaca area that they went to just during the offseason.  An NHL all-star can probably afford to keep more than one home.  And the family of an NHL all-star most likely wouldn't be too pleased at choosing to spend winters in Ithaca, NY.  All the Journal said was that they "have a home in Ithaca."

Perhaps they'll live in Ithaca during the habitable month(s?), and then head south for the school year.

Or maybe it was theoretical... "He'll always have a home here [in our hearts]."

The Rancor

he is THE reason i played hockey as a kid. i'll miss him in the NHL. I'll love him in the Hall Of Fame.

Circumstances of his retirement are very similar to those that caused Dave Taylor's retirement.

Both were great players and terrific leaders both on and off th eice.

And among the best pros the ECAC has produced.

I always liked Joe and rooted for him except when he played for the dreaded Devils.  :-/

Not scary...smart!  :-D

Interesting, I know somebody that has adjacent property to Joe and they go hunting together from time to time.  So it begs the question, what are you referring to when you mention off-season?

I never got to meet Joey, and due to needing sleep more than 6 am pick-up hockey, missed a chance to play with him at the Rink during one of the summer pick-up times. The only time I got to see him play live was at a few of the Alumni games in the early 90's. Everything I have heard and read emphasizes what a classy guy he is. I wish him the best as he transitions into retirement.

I've met him half a dozen times.  Extremely nice, classy guy, not at all ruffled or pompous from the acclaim he got from the Faithful.

After looking into his profile, I am a little confused. I know he left Cornell in '87, but did he graduate? Some sources suggest that he did not, and others refer to him as '88. Just curious.
