OK, if this is really in the book, can you point me to the page?  Doesn't seem to make sense if Strunk and White didn't title it with the damn "!" .
"When we came off, [Bitz] said, 'Thank God you scored that goal,'" Moulson said. "He would've killed me if I didn't."

The most relevant section that I can find is on page 36 of my copy, in Chapter III, "A few Matters of Form:"
[q]When a quotation is followed by an attributive phrase, the comma is enclosed within the quotation marks.

     "I can't attend," she said.

Typographical usage dictates that the comma be inside the marks, though logically it often seems not to belong there.[/q]
Another approach would be to make use of the Typographical capabilities offered here beyond those of a simple typewriter:  Damn you, Elements of Style!  ::rolleyes::

Speaking of OT - hey Rich, which team do you coach at the Ice Vault?  My kid is on the Mahwah Mites (just moved to Sportorama this season, which stinks) but I'm thinking about putting him on the Bandits.
