Quote from: wolcomaFirst game and kind of what I expected against Albany.   While our defense played very well, it was pretty much a lackluster offensive effort, with the exception of the TD catch by Kurtz near the end of the game.

While I like Swanstrom, he pretty much ignores the running game and that was the reason why Albany won and we didn't.  The Albany running back rushed for 126 yards.   In comparison, Cornell's running backs combined for a total of 47 yards on the ground. The other yards came from QB scrambles.    Year after year it's "Rinse and Repeat", whether it's Swanstrom, Archer, Austin, etc.   Cornell will never be competitive in the Ivy League without a strong running game. Ithaca is not Florida where you can spread out your receivers and pass for 300 yards every game.   When I was at the Columbia game last November their running back rushed for  166 yards and our running backs ran for a "combined" 75 yards.   Even though Wang scrambled for 100 yards, we still lost the game.   It ain't rocket science but modern coaches want to pretend they are Clemson or LSU.   Go Big Red!

Same feeling here. I'm hoping we see some of the young RBs they brought as the season progresses to start and develop a more balanced offense,

Yale has a much better offense than Albany and Cornell will be hard pressed to keep the game within reach.  Cornell's offense has to score more than a couple TDs if they want any chance.  I hope we see some of the freshman RBs get some playing time this season.  With Pope's size he is more of a gadget 3rd down back, but not the type of RB that can run between the tackles and keep Cornell's defense off the field.

Missing their best offensive weapon in WR Sam Musungu is a huge blow to the Cornell offense.

That's the ballgame.

At least they weren't shut-out on their first game. I don't see much chance against a strong Yale team next week.

Quote from: rss77Execution on offense is lacking tonight

I'm not a fan of alternating QBs.  No continuity.

Quote from: ugarteQB draw to the 7, 1st and Goal... defense holds but the FG is good. Cornell cuts it to 6-3.

Should mention that Cornell is playing Lang and Bass-Sulpezio at QB on alternating drives. Bass-Sulpezio was under center for the scoring drive.

Devin Page.

Quote from: ugarteCompletions of 13, 12 and 6 and Cornell is knocking on the door...

Wasted opportunity to score a TD settling for a FG is not going to get it done in this game.

Quote from: mike1960Any optimism for this season? Will we improve on our 4-6 record from last year?

I don't think the quality depth is there yet.  It's possible they take a set back this season having to replace Wang at QB.  Another recruiting class like this years will really help the program.  My forecast is anywhere from 2-7 to 5-5 at best.

Quote from: CASWonder if the weights have been updated - Swanstrom has talked about the big gains the team made in size & strength during the offseason.

That's a good point.

Quote from: CornellLonghornI rather have guys that are undersized as a center 6'7-6'9 but filled out and can guard 4's and 5's and transfers out after 1-2 years than 6'10+ that don't play for 3-4 years and never get to fill out. When Jeff Foote led the 2010 team to the Sweet 16 he was 7'0 245lbs. Don't think Cornell has had a big like that since. Rather play at a slower pace with the shooting Cornell has between Noard and Fiegan with a filled out big than with guys who can move faster paced but can't rebound/score.

Cornell has never had a center with the size of Jeff Foote before or after him.  It was a nice run while he was here.

Quote from: CASCornell's game notes with the two-deep were  posted yesterday.

Not sure you caught it on the two deep, but Cornell's starting DL is especially small this year in weight.  Hopefully they are very active and can swarm to the ball on run defense.  Whether they can apply enough pressure to the QB on passing plays is another question mark.

Quote from: underskillWouldn't those big guys already be going to bigger programs at that point?

There will also be the risk as in any position, to lose them to bigger programs as happened with Yale losing center Danny Wolf to Michigan.

Quote from: Ken711Cornell receives a  2026 basketball commitment. Trey Williams, Loyola Academy IL, 6'3 180lbs PG.

We're goid at finding guards, not as successful with big men.

Agreed, that's been the case for a long time. Hopefully, they are targeting a few in this class.

Hope I'm wrong, however with Cornell breaking in a new QB, their star WR out with an injury, and the inevitable first game mistakes, probably means a first game loss.
