Re: Men's Basketball 22-23 - 1 year ago
Agreed and a bit of irony in that Earl's offense is the type of offense Courtney tried to bring to Cornell. Courtney was a really nice guy but could not coach his way out of a paper bag.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
Agree with the comments on Special Teams. As for the secondary there are a couple of comments to add-Despite criticism of Archer et al I have some praise for Jared Backus who has been the Defensive Coordinator the past few years. I think he gets maximum production out of the talent Cornell has on defense. That said however as they say it comes down to Jimmies and the Joes and not the X and Os.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball 22-23 - 1 year ago
Cornell is not going to beat anyone not even Little Sisters of the Poor going 1 for 22 on field goals like it did in the second half-simple math. Colgate beat SU hitting a record number of 3s in the Dome and they were almost beat by Bryant. Cornell had open looks from 3 that were not going in-thus the game. Thought it was Cornell's best chance of beating them and just did not work out. The anby rss77 - Other Sports

Was told by one of the current players that Syracuse wanted to play Princeton instead of Cornell (Gary Gait's son was on the Princeton team a few years back).by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
Going into the season I thought going 5-5 was about the best case scenario. They did although the finish against Columbia was disappointing. The team is in better shape than it was a few years ago but noticed that especially against Harvard and Yale in terms of on field talent we are still behind. Their guys appeared to be a step quicker and more athletic. Doesn't matter who is coaching at Coby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
Don't think Wang is going anywhere as he has already transferred once. He was at the Air Force Academy preseason camp and walked away. Archer said at one of the sports luncheons last year that he is on a full ride at Cornell because he declared himself emancipated from his parents. Don't forget that Cornell was missing two out of three of their top running backs. I think we saw today what a diby rss77 - Other Sports

Would feel better about Cornell's chances of picking up 2 or 3 more wins if Eddy Tillman was healthy. By the looks of his injury Saturday he may be out for the season. Carruthers run hard but not as quick in getting to the line of scrimmage. Tillman's running was a key to the victory as Wang had trouble finding open receivers against Brown.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
One of the strangest games that I have ever seen. Cornell's defense could not get off the field until their backs were against the wall with Lehigh punting only once (How many 3rd downs did Cornell give up-I lost count). Agreed that the officiating was inexcusable during the game with a number of calls going against Cornell (Roughing, pass interference, etc.). As Bill Parceells used to say: &qby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
Was impressed by Harvard's athletic ability last night. It seemed every time there was opening a Harvard player filled in the gap. Per the offensive line struggles I was told before the season that 3 projected starters for the offensive went down with season-ending injuries so the line is a bit jerry-built. It has lead to the struggles in pass protection where Wang is literally running for hisby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
Kudos to Wang on his game. He is just fun to watch with both his running and passing. Very remindful of Gary Wood back in the day. Like Tillman at the running back position. He has that extra burst of speed to get to the holes the offensive line creates. All the same there is some cleaning up to do with the penalties and mistakes in the run game. The run plays seemed to take too long to devby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell football 2022 - 1 year ago
Cornell was simply outclassed on both sides of the ball. Not blaming the Quarterback Wang for the effort-he barely had time to throw as the Cornell offensive line was unable to keep Yale defenders out of the backfield. Not many positives to take out of this game. On to Colgate in Hamilton.by rss77 - Other Sports
Men's Basketball 22-23 - 1 year ago
Time to start a new thread. I see that the incoming recruiting class is posted. Pretty guard heavy. Was hoping they could bring in some more height. Maybe a player out of this group can pick up the slack for Jordan Jones's scoring punch (Jones went into the Transfer Portal).by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: 2022 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Thread of DESTINY - 1 year ago
Great Effort and am Very proud of this team. I will just say McNaney the Maryland Goalie reminded me of Dan Mackesey who was such a quick and mobile Goalie on those Cornell teams in 1976 and 1977.by rss77 - Other Sports

I think Quint is a pretty decent analyst and never found him anti-Cornell (He backstopped the Hopkins championship over Cornell in 1987). Anish is a little too pro Syracuse and Carc tends to go over the top in overpraising some players is my assessment Ryan Boyle is a much better analyst and IMO the key to being a good analyst is never to refer back "When I played". Hoping for best toby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
The team this year is thin on depth when it comes to scoring. Outside of Kirst and Piatelli there does not seem to be consistent scoring threats coming from elsewhere on the team lately. Ierlan played well enough but lack of support on defense is telling when Brown's offensive players consistently found time and room to shoot similar to last week's game against Army. Thought close defense wasby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
Cornell defense was worn down by Army's dominance at faceoff X. Like any game possession of the ball is everything. We can talk about the Goalie play but Army's offensive players seemed to have time and room on every shot puts too much pressure Ierlan or Brust to make miraculous saves. Sometimes the faceoff strikes me like having a jump ball after every basket, It puts such a premium on oneby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
I thought Knust did an excellent job in Goal but Ierlan had a rough start and would think Buczek would reinsert Chayse at Goal against Army. Piatelli is a Monster out there. I don't recall a Cornell athlete having a better shooting % in a game. Gutsy all around effort and the key was Petrakis held his own against the Syracuse faceoff guy who came in at 59%.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
Credit also the Dartmouth goalie-by stats the top Goalie in the Ivies. He made some incredible stops and the Dartmouth defense was not allowing too much interior passing. Yes the Red to miss Blake and Lombardi but one must readapt and thinking the 2nd midfield line is showing some progress with Wolf, Wirtheim, and Sheehan (Good to see two Central New Yorkers). Adler is incredible.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
With Blake and Lombardi out we need to see if some of the underclassman can step up. There are about 50 on the roster-correct? Was watching the Yale-Princeton game and noted that Shay, the Yale coach, was gradually putting some first year players out there, Concerning faceoffs I believe the rules makers goal is to create 50/50 balls with more wing play but what we are seeing is that no matterby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball 21-22 - 2 years ago
A shame if he goes. Was looking forward to watching him play next year. Patel, Noll, and Dickson have an extra year to use elsewhere also. Am a little concerned about future of Ivies. It is starting to look like a farm system for the bigs. Cornell, Penn, and Brown have been pushing for graduate student eligibility but it just voted down again by the Ivy Prexies (For rules to change it has toby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball 21-22 - 2 years ago
Brown's offensive rebounding was a difference and Cornell's interior defense has been its Achilles Heel all season. Cornell's offense is as good as anyone's in the Ivy League but it gets caught up in trading baskets. Manon is getting better at passing off when he drives but that late game turnover was a killer.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Women's Basketball - 2 years ago
Cornell has also been averse to firing coaches with time left on their contracts. They got drilled at Harvard today 89-47. Princeton Women's basketball program is bringing in two (2) top 100 players next year. Cornell is not recruiting on that levelby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
Interesting news coming from the NCAA Convention-Passed a resolution allowing a number of D3 schools playing D1 sports to offer athletic scholarships. RIT in men's and women's ice hockey, Union in men's and women's ice hockey, MIT (!) in rowing and Hobart in men's lacrosse. Restrictions have been put in because athletes on athletic aid at Hobart can only play lacrosse and cannot play at any otherby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
Not sure what Cornell can do to compete in the League. Maxie Baughan used transfers to upgrade the talent plus some good recruiting. I still think Archer should look at the transfer portal-surely there is some good talent disenchanted with big time football that may be looking for a change. Whatever Cornell has been doing the last 30 years has not worked through a multitude of coaches. John Foxby rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Men's Basketball 21-22 - 2 years ago
Who knows how it will go with COVID but at least the Ivies are trying to play. The way I see it Cornell possesses serious depth over the other Ivies. As we have seen with the Power 5 games it is overall lack of height that is the weak spot. Penn, Brown, Princeton and Harvard (If they get their big men healthy) might pose problems. Have to say that I amazed with the 3 point shooting on the team.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - Sun editorials, op-eds - 2 years ago
As a long time season ticket holder for football attendance has to be a concern. Without parents of players, band members, and maybe cheerleaders there would not be anybody at the games. Low attendance probably also a reason for the tarp. The football team's current state is a factor but looking at attendance for the other Ivy League schools it has to be a concern for the whole league.by rss77 - Other Sports

Re: State of Cornell Athletics - 2 years ago
Let's see over the last 20 or so years: Pendergast, Knowles, Austin, Archer with only 1 winning season between them and 31 years when they last won a championship. I think a lot more than a "savior coach" is needed. I would like to see Cornell do a deep dive study on why they have such limited success in football.by rss77 - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
Back to football. The defense performed really well against Harvard with Backus's leadership as Defensive Coordinator. Found out Harvard's offensive line has two players doing post grad years at Power 5 schools (One at Penn State and the other at LSU). Unfortunately we have an offense that can't get out of its own way-sighby rss77 - Other Sports
