Re: Yale Game Thread - 2 years ago
Trotsky Somebody kill a bandy every time they play Chelsea Dagger or Sweet Caroline. Fuck Chicago / Fuck Boston. I have trained my entire family to chant "Boston sucks" at the bom-bom-bom part of Sweet Caroline.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Yale Game Thread - 2 years ago
billhoward New cheer -- "Five point weeeekend!" Did they actually chant that? I was thinking it, but I'm impressed if the students were on the ball enough to do it.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

LGR14 CU2007 Students. Sing the Gary glitter song after the band stops. It’s fantastic. Gonna keep beating this drum Not a student anymore, but the band started playing it earlier, so now they finish the two verses before the refs drop the puck. It sucks. Re: Interesting news about Harvard admissions - 2 years ago
David Harding 50+ years ago a Harvard alumnus visited my high school to talk with anyone who showed up and I came away with a few good lines. Someone asked about study abroad and the rep said that Harvard doesn't support study abroad. "We bring the best scholars in the world to Harvard, so there is no reason to go anywhere else." I would suspect that hasn't been true for a while, sinby jtwcornell91 - Other Sports
Re: Womens hockey 21 - 2 years ago
Weder The NCAA tournament will expand to 11 teams (yes, 11) either this season or next season. I really wonder what they were thinking going with 11 and not 12. 11 apparently gives them the same fraction as the men of teams in the tournament (27%), but was there some sort of regulation that said they couldn't go over by one?by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Game thread - 2 years ago
Scersk '97 Really, everything is fantastic, including the interplay between play-by-play and color that already sounds like it's been going on for years. If you had told me in 2005 that we would have every Cornell hockey game streaming via ESPN on the internet, with Grady doing the play-by-play for the games at Lynah, you would have had to get out the smelling salts to revive me before gettingby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: No Shots On Goal Display At Lynah - 2 years ago
Scersk '97 DafatoneThere was an experience at Schoellkopf? Once upon a time, it was pretty pleasant, actually. The band was IMNSHO entertaining, there were cheerleaders, the team sometimes won. Heck, there were even stands on the west side of the field! Moving the students to Crescent was an admission of the beginning of the end, in retrospect. Re: Dartmouth Game - 2 years ago
Rita Chris H82 Side note - did anyone else notice just how ugly Dartmouth's uniforms were? It seems we were playing against a bunch of guys in convict gear. Almost as ugly as the old Seattle Metropolitans jerseys from 100+ years ago (I'm sure the Kraken will wear something like that for a throwback night....) my brother is a die-hard fan of Celtic FC of the Scottish Premiership and Dartmouth'sby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Trotsky I am fine* with these stripes because they have a connection with history -- stripes were common in the early days of college hockey (rugby transplant maybe)? * Occasionally. And never in the pros where thirds are just another way to milk the suckers. This may be why I hate center stripes on hockey helmets so much (PSU, OSU, etc) since their only connection is to football.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Al DeFlorio Give My Regards billhoward Not clear if "input" means they actually vote. I strongly suspect that a lot of them don't. I suspect "input" means that someone, not necessarily the coach, but someone who is (or may not be) affiliated with the team and who has time for such things sends the vote in. Re: 3-on-3 overtime and the RPI & PWR - 2 years ago
Jim Hyla If you don't want to say undefeated, then come up with a different word, but don't change the meaning of the word for that season, when the powers can again change the giving of points for this season. Presumably the accurate phrase would be "perfect record". But you're right, "undefeated" typically also includes teams with ties, but in soccer three ties is equivalby jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Re: 3-on-3 overtime and the RPI & PWR - 2 years ago
ursusminor upprdeck on the flip side since hockey is also a fan sport.. Talked with kids at multiple schools the last few days and they love the 3x3 and shootout. Most fans do and there are far more casual fans than hardcore. if you remove the PWR issues it is fun to watch for many people. I think that is the logic, namely that they are trying to please kids and those who are not hardcore fans.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey

Al DeFlorio marty Al DeFlorio marty jtwcornell91 In the name of eliminating ties, the NCAA has actually caused more games to be counted more or less as ties. This! Thank you. This happens when you lose sight of the forest. The only games where you can justify extreme measures to ensure a winner are tournament games. Re: Alaska Post Mortem - 2 years ago
upprdeck considering the layoff and Alaska had multiple games under their belt not sure it was a bad result.. Maybe in 3-4 weeks we are still struggling to score, but dont give up hope. We didnt generate a ton of odd man rushes, but still there were more than enough quality shots that were saved or missed the net. If we had won 4-2/3-1 in regulation would people feel better? Re: Lynah now at full capacity - 2 years ago
marty Dafatone What does it count as for RPI? The pairwise is practically just RPI with the occasional wrinkle. Looks like a tie to me, or maybe the same 55% stuff. Good fodder for JTW's students, but not so much for my vintage brain.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Lynah now at full capacity - 2 years ago
ursusminor CU2007 scoop85 Jeff Hopkins '82 CU2007 Decent attendance. So does that count as a win or a tie for pairwise stuff? What was the score? None of the uscho or CHN pages are showing it. 3-2 in OT. Counts as .55% of a win in Pairwise Damn. And here I was thinking “well we escaped with the win and that’s all that matters” and then I guess we only sorta did but also kinda didn’t. .55by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
Re: Cornell Football 2021 - 2 years ago
margolism If the offense can only score more points than the defense gives up, I think we can have a successful program. I remember back in the Dan Fouts "Air Coryell" era, one wise commentator observing that the San Diego Chargers' defense was so bad that they only way they could win was by scoring more points than the other team.by jtwcornell91 - Other Sports

CU2007 scoop85 With Yale’s scoreless tie against Penn, we are now alone in 2nd place behind 4-0 Princeton. We play the Tigers next Saturday in Jersey in the battle for 1st place. If Cornell prevails we’d then have Ivy also-fans Dartmouth and Columbia to finish out the season, so next week could be for all the marbles. dbilmes I was at the game at Yale today. We were definitely the better team, but that døesn't always mean a win in soccer. We had sø many quality chances that didn't pan out. In the first half, there was a sequence following a Cornell corner kick where twice we beat the goalie only to have a Yale defender head the ball off the goal line. We had a shot go off the crossbar in the second half, and tby jtwcornell91 - Other Sports

French Rage Maybe it's just me but who the hell eats at a sporting event anyways. Eat beforehand. I'm too busy yelling and jumping and such to consider eating a meal at that moment. But that may be just me. For people whose natural dinnertime is around 8pm, not being able to eat between 6:45 and 9:30 is kind of inconvenient.by jtwcornell91 - Hockey
