I've met Jim several times. He's an awfully nice guy and seemed to have some traction turning the program around his first year or two, but all that momentum seems to be lost now...by CUontheslopes - Other Sports

Re: Walking Wounded - 14 years ago
I thought Birch and D'Agastino looked solid last night. Miller and Axell are the real deal. Miller ripped as hard a slap shot as I've seen in college hockey last night - an absolute cannon. I think we'll se Axell and Miller on the 3rd or checking lines before the season's through.by CUontheslopes - Hockey

RichH CUontheslopes Personally, I think he doesn't play with a lot of heart. Oh, OK. Heart. Well, maybe he should make a visit to The Wizard then, and get some of that and everything will be A-OK and he'll stop making any mistakes. And what is it visually that has led you to make that diagnosis about his blood-pumping organ? Sorry for the sarcasm, but the topic of "Intangibles"by CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
Josh '99 HockeyMan Josh '99 Agreed. Nobody gets to this level without being tremendously motivated and working extremely hard. Huh? All kinds of players get to this level without working quite as hard all the time as their peers. Is there a more oft-stated line by a coach than "So and so is maybe the hardest worker on this team," or "He's very talented but he sometimes he doby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
Jim Hyla CUontheslopes It's amazing how two people can watch the same game and come away with completely different takes! Guess that's why sportscasters and commentators can make a living.Wow, two people can see the same thing and learn from each other, who'd have thunk that. I guess listening to the broadcast during the game can teach one something. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. For those who dby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs. Niagara Postgame - 14 years ago
HockeyMan CUontheslopes On the whole, I thought CU looked a lot better for this point in the year than other years. Riley Nash made more great passes in one night than I've seen in a long time. He constantly finds the open man and his passes are not just the standard around the perimeter passes. He's putting the puck through the interior of the defense and finding open guys. redice Al DeFlorio Related to this item, interesting sentence in today's Ithaca Journal: Scrivens stopped 28 shots, but Schafer said he wasn't pleased with the first goal -- even though he felt Scrivens was interfered with -- and other things that Scrivens did. And, how about that second period play where he flipped the puck in the air from his glove and attempted to swat it out of the air wby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell - Niagara Pre-game - 14 years ago
I assume Scrivens will start. I haven't heard anything to imply otherwise. Look out for the two freshmen d-men, Birch and D'Agastino. Both looked older than their age last weekend and Birch just looks like he wants to hit someone. Another freshman to watch is Esposito - he really can fly, a little out of control still, but FLIES. Should be a good test tonight. Niagara has lost 3 one goal gby CUontheslopes - Hockey

Re: ECAC's moving to Atlantic City in 2011 - 14 years ago
I grew up in NJ also and have to say I was of the same opinion on AC until I went there for the first time in also about 15 years this July. The town has really made a nice comeback. It's not the AC I knew as a little kid. Of course, I was there in midsummer when everything was going on, but still, there's nice, new infrastructure, casinos that looked decidedly less tacky, etc. Personally, I loveby CUontheslopes - Hockey
NCAA Men's Lax Game vs. UMass/Pton winner on ESPN 360 - 15 years ago
For those of you who won't be able to make the game out on Strong Island and live in an area without ESPNU, the game will be available on ESPN360 and ESPN360.com Also check espn360.com for more details. Works out well for us since Sunday's games are not on 360.by CUontheslopes - Other Sports
Re: MLax NCAAs 2009: Hofstra 8 @ Cornell 11 (final) - 15 years ago
I was there yesterday (of course!), but a few things worked against a large student turnout: 1. Exams 2. The weather - it was raining/lightning/etc. for the hours leading up to the game. The sun only came out about 10 minutes before the game. I think a lot of people assumed it would be raining. I know of a few people who watched it on tv (embarrassing - get out there in a poncho) 3. Re: New Recruit for '09 - Greg Miller - 15 years ago
Wow sounds like this guy is the real deal. Also, I wouldn't take it as a negative AT ALL that he's older. That's a huge positive. Air Force has built its recent success on getting older guys because they're bigger, stronger and more mature. Quick question for the uneducated? I thought the BCHL was a really top flight league. Is the OJHL considered to be better?by CUontheslopes - Hockey

Not watching the game, but noticed on the boxscore that Bitz scored an assist in the second period on Thorton's goal.by CUontheslopes - Hockey
Cornell Lax Video vs. UVA - 15 years ago
Not sure if anyone's seen this on youtube, but it really shows a few difference between the pton game. The close in defense looked MUCH better against pton. The defense seems to be coming together nicely...by CUontheslopes - Other Sports
Re: MLax: Princeton 7 @ Cornell 10 (Final) - 15 years ago
It's absolutely the right strategy. You can score so quickly in lacrosse off faceoffs that the right play is to run the clock. No doubt about it. The Maryland incident isn't anecdotal. Running out the clock up a couple goals is the safer play. No guarantee of course, but a much smarter play.by CUontheslopes - Other Sports
Re: MLax: Princeton 7 @ Cornell 10 (Final) - 15 years ago
Al DeFlorioJim Hylabillhoward My question as a non-expert is: If you've got an open net to shoot at ... And your faceoff guy is winning better than 2 of 3 faceoffs ... Why not build your lead? ... Bill, I'm a non-expert, but the reason for doing it is, if you've got the ball they can't score, if they can't score they can't win. If you score you give them a chance to get the ball back andby CUontheslopes - Other Sports

Do you think Jones will help pull in different talent? better talent? I vaguely remember someone saying he would help in Quebec because he spoke French? Sorry, I just am not sure what effect you think he'll have if you wouldn't mind elaborating.by CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Scrivens inability in big games - 15 years ago
I'm not saying he's bad, merely that he's not clutch. However, there's a difference between being good and being clutch. Give me the guy who wants to be at the plate with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, the guy who wants the ball in his hand with 3 seconds on the clock. It's an intangible thing and unfortunately I don't think Scrivens (as of yet) has it. He started off the year so promisinglyby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: I hate to say this, but... - 15 years ago
Having watched almost every game this season, I can tell you Scrivens is certainls <50% on breakaways. He gets beat a lot. Northeastern game was a classic example.by CUontheslopes - Hockey
Scrivens inability in big games - 15 years ago
I have to agree. Scrivens just has not been good in big games. In fact, he hasn't been serviceable on many occasions. This season alone we had a number of big big games and he really let us down in many of them. Of course, he had some good games, but all of them seemed to come against lesser opponents. For example: BU@MSG - terrible North Dakota - absolutely awful Yale ECAC Finals - abysmalby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Bemidji NCAA regionals postgame - 15 years ago
I'm convinced that's the difference maker...the PP was just so much better in 03...seems like it's been getting progressively weaker.by CUontheslopes - Hockey

50something now I think? 39th won't get it done. In previous successful seasons we were much better (at least it seemed)by CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Bemidji NCAA regionals postgame - 15 years ago
Let's not forget how good our special teams were. It seems to me the biggest problem is our PP. We were something like 39th in the country. You can get away with being a great defensive team if you score 2-3 pp goals a game. When you don't...you struggle. I'm sorry, but the 03 team would be a beast no matter who they played. Of course, had a puck bounced our way in 05 or 06 we'd probably think Scby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Bemidji NCAA regionals postgame - 15 years ago
Yeah...I really just think anyone's who's been to Lynah in the last few years and could compare to 03-05/06 would tell you we're not physical. We're big, but we're not imposing the way we used to be. I'll always miss the line of Sawada, Bitz, O'Byrne, Pokulok and I forget the third forward, but everyone 6-2/3" plus and over 215 lbs. That's Cornell hockey. They hit people. Take that back...thby CUontheslopes - Hockey
Re: Cornell-Bemidji NCAA regionals postgame - 15 years ago
This one just one of those games where you could feel it slipping away and knew Cornell wasn't going to claw it back. It's funny, I couldn't tell you where things really went wrong. After that first Cornell goal the whole room had a feeling we were going to put our foot on their throat and take it to DC. They're fast for sure, but more fast and out of control/wild. Re: How about 3 in DC?? - 15 years ago
Screw 3 ECAC teams...it'd be 3 IVY teams. That would make people's heads explode! Smart kids...good at sports? Three Ivies in the tournament is quite an impressive feat. If the Ivies had this level of competition year in and year out, we'd be better off as a conference of 6. We'd get our autobid and a chance to play a better out of conference schedule. Of course, we don't get that level of coby CUontheslopes - Hockey
