Re: Cornell lacrosse 2024 - 2 days ago
Nah. The difference between fifth year COVID eligibility and other limitations that have burdened Ivy sports in the past is that this one is new, and it’s going away after next year. Cornell has managed to compete with the blue bloods of hockey and lacrosse despite the lack of scholarships and other historical limitations, but this is yet a new significant limitation placed on top of the existingby BearLover - Other Sports

Iceberg BearLover Nice to see Princeton get destroyed in the NCAA tournament. But it will be nice when COVID eligibility goes away and the Ivies can compete with the Marylands of the world again. Did you not see any of the 2022 championship game? Nevermind the fact that Cornell was very competitive this season against some of the teams (including the #1 overall) in the NCAA's this weekend.by BearLover - Other Sports

Re: Men's Lax Tournament 2024 - 9 days ago
Probably worth noting that Cornell would almost certainly have made the NCAAs if it were allowed to have grad students. Losses to Penn State, Denver, Notre Dame feel more frustrating given all the grad students and transfers on those teams. Cornell had a pretty nice season to finish 12 in RPI despite being at a massive disadvantage to almost every other team in the country.by BearLover - Other Sports
Re: Schoellkopf Field needs to be upgraded to Ivy standards. - 9 days ago
Trotsky No. We don't "need" anything in athletics. Ever. That's a cutesy luxury after you take care of academics. We need better salaries for professors and better packages to get better grad students, and we need to give Poors a free ride and charge the rich up the ass to reproduce their generational wealth in their idiot progeny. We need to burn every other building on campus tby BearLover - Other Sports

arugula We screwed ourselves over. Unlike hockey at least we blew it by playing a strong schedule. Harder to be too upset about some of the lacrosse losses versus hockey losing to Colgate etc. Funny that Kirst is the Award candidate when Long is the most important player. If my math is right is that 100 total seasons between hockey and lacrosse of being national contenders and never winby BearLover - Other Sports

CU77 We need Penn, PSU, and Georgetown all to win. If they do, Cornell has a decent shot at the last at-large. Current RPI: 1. Notre Dame 0.7000 2. Duke 0.6710 3. Johns Hopkins 0.6521 4. Syracuse 0.6440 5. Virginia 0.6364 6. Denver 0.6295 7. Maryland 0.6274 8. Penn State 0.6244 9. Penn 0.6142 10. Georgetown 0.6113 11. Princeton 0.6083 12. Cornell 0.6080 13. Yale 0.6038 14. Would anybody like to take a stab at predicting how this rumored settlement, which could include up to $20m of revenues per school being shared with athletes, would affects the Ivies’ ability to compete nationally? It can’t be good!by BearLover - Other Sports
Re: Bye-bye Ben - 16 days ago
upprdeck Think about it though. If he does well, why does he want to come back to a job at Cornell when Princeton has so many things going for it to help a coach? How old will he be in 2-3-4 yrs anyway to want to take over another program?? Because Cornell can compete at the national level? Also, why assume Schafer is retiring in 2-4 years? Syer is 49.by BearLover - Hockey

CU77 BearLover So, if margin of victory/loss isn’t part of the selection committee’s criteria, what *is* their criteria? And why in the world would it be preferable to going purely based off of RPI? Official criteria are pretty goofy (see below), and IMO they are not preferable to straight RPI. Also the committee usually seems to start with straight RPI anyway and then muck around from there, sinby BearLover - Other Sports

CU77 BearLover I’m having a hard time seeing how Cornell could miss the NCAAs at this point. We are 9th in RPI and there are 18 NCAA spots. We had one bad loss the entire season, vs Penn State; the other three losses were by one goal. We blew a lot of teams out. I don’t see how the committee could leave Cornell out even if we lose next week. How many autobids could go to teams who would not gby BearLover - Other Sports

upprdeck So a cornell win makes it Cornell Princeton Yale Penn Really need to beat Penn then because 2 losses to them and Penn perhaps winning the Ivy puts Cornell back on the bubble I don’t see how that would put Cornell on the bubble.by BearLover - Other Sports

abmarks BearLover Cornell hockey won the ECAC and qualified for the NCAAs this season in large part because they didn’t have to beat anybody especially good on their way to the title. So what. We'd have had a better shot at winning the whole thing if we'd learned from (and beat).much better teams. You want a lottery ticket. I'd rather have a much stronger chance of winning the rhing5 Huby BearLover - Other Sports

abmarks Bearlover: since he got the job, I think your question about why Princeton but not Cornell HC is a good, and relevant one. Be interesting to see if any info slips out on this over time. Or maybe when Adam said syer would not be a Cornell HC, he already knew just how likely syer was to land the Princeton job. That seems the most likely explanation of Adam's emphatic statement. Chris '03 Princeton, SLU, and Clarkson now all led by former Schafer assistants. Seems pretty remarkable. Yes, it’s nuts. Clarkson and SLU play similar styles to Cornell, and now you have to imagine Princeton will as well. So we end up with three Cornell-lites in the same league as Cornell. I guess Flanagan gets promoted to associate head coach, and Schafer brings in somebody new in Flanagan’by BearLover - Hockey

osorojo Anybody know about what percentage of current NHL hockey players are college graduates? I would like to see how this number compares to the percentage of college graduates playing in other major professional sports. Comparing hockey to other sports doesn’t make much sense. For example, almost 100% of NFL players are Americans who had no options besides playing NCAA football. Hockey isby BearLover - Hockey
Re: Attendance at Lynah - 24 days ago
Interesting to revisit some of these old threads. I think fan attendance and energy is clearly not as good as it was 15 years ago, but at least it’s mostly plateaued over the past 10 years. My general thoughts —winning doesn’t have much of an effect on attendance. There doesn’t seem to be any correlation between the two. I can imagine that, if you’re a marginal fan, Cornell winning the gameby BearLover - Hockey

adamw BearLover ugarte There is literally no information that indicates Syer might be the next Cornell head coach. adamw BearLover Dafatone pfibiger Dafatone BearLover adamw I should probably just shut up - but I'm not good at that. I think Ben Syer and Topher are great guys. Neither will be the next coach. Casey Jones is one of my favorite people in hockey, and I think he's a great coach. However, he's only 4 years younger than Coach Schafer - and so it won't be him either.
