Re: PWR Today, 2-17-02 - 22 years ago
Jordan, The way I understand it (someone please correct me!) is that the PWR is a model of the real selection process, which occurs behind closed doors. However, the committee has (intentionally) leaked enough information over the years for laymen to construct the PWR statistical model that mimics the behavior of the actual committee. As best as I can recall, the PWR process has correctly predby Robb - Hockey

One more thought: if we have to win at Placid to get in, don't you think the rest of the ECAC should let us win, just so we put a team the NCAAs who has a resonable chance at a respectable showing?by Robb - Hockey

PWR Today, 2-17-02 - 22 years ago
Well, we moved up to #9 again. I'm a little surprised how much movement there still is at this point in the season. In any case, here is how we stack up against the teams around us: we are just behind: Colorado College vs Cornell RPI 0.5989 1 0.5700 0 L16 11- 3- 2 0 12- 4- 0 0 TUC 8- 6- 0 0 7- 5- 0 1 H2Hby Robb - Hockey

Re: Own Horn - 22 years ago
It also depends which side of the Atlantic you're on. Americans nearly always refer to companies in singular form ("Bell Atlantic is going to lay off 10,000 workers today", whereas Brits consistently say "British Telecom are kicking Bell Atlantic's butt." This holds true with sports teams as well, and they don't even have plural-named sports teams - "Arsenal are runningby Robb - Hockey
Re: 2 NCAA bids for the MAAC - 22 years ago
Wait. Let's assume that Mercyhurst wins out the RS and makes it to the conference final, which they then lose. I really can't see them finishing above about 10th or so in PWR anyway. Their RPI won't improve that much, since their opponents all suck. Their last 16 record is about as good as it gets, etc. Therefore, even if all the other tourneys are all won by teams above them in PWR, they woby Robb - Hockey
Re: Ivy Magic Numbers - 22 years ago
Yeah - I'm not even sure if the ECAC tiebreakers are fully defined. I seem to remember that there can be cases that are ambiguous and/or definitely unresolvable with the official tie-breaking procedure. Thank goodness we've never seen one arise. Which is a worse system: the electoral college or the ECAC tiebreakers? You make the call!by Robb - Hockey
Re: Question about Chris Higgins - 22 years ago
Rich, I really doubt that you can't see the difference in the way I phrased the statement and the way you did. A good communicator considers his audience. If you wanted to get across the message that Schafer overreacted, you should have said that he overreacted. Instead, you said it precisely as you did for the sole purpose of pissing people off. Your intent was not to communicate, but to iby Robb - Hockey
Re: Lighten up - 22 years ago
No problem. I think this is a case of the blind men and the elephant. I was standing with many fans who *were* explicitly saying, "Boy, I hope SLU rips that banner down so we can rip theirs down." I admit that I made a generalization when I said that all Cornell fans (including the banner hanger) were feeling this way. I don't even know if the people who ripped down the SLU banner wby Robb - Hockey
Re: Ivy Magic Numbers - 22 years ago
Keith, Does your script just do an exhaustive search of the possibilities? I've been working on some tools of my own, but it gets harder when you look at the ECAC as a whole. E.g. with only two weekends left, there are 3^24 = 282,429,536,481 cases to check. If you could check 100 cases per second, that's about 89.49 years to run all the combinations (yes, accounting for leap years ). Anywayby Robb - Hockey

My God, RichS. You have to be one of the most annoying people I've ever encountered. I agree 100% with the content of many of your posts, yet I still end up being annoyed by the way that you say things. Conversely, there are other posters with whom I disagree vehemently, yet still respect. In the name of good natured ribbing and friendly competition, will you please try to consider the tone oby Robb - Hockey

Re: the LP banner ripping. Here's the real deal: Someone (I believe Ray DiLaureo;s (sp?) mother) had made a beautiful banner by cutting out colored construction paper letters and pasting them on brown butcher paper. Twice. Each letter was in white with a red shadow. The banner read (and I kid you not): "Ahh - Springtime in Lake Placid. The snow is melting, the birds are singing, and Raby Robb - Hockey

Re: What has to happen for Cornell to end up in Ann Arbor as opposed to Worcester? - 22 years ago
You ask this question as if you hope we end up in Ann Arbor. I'd say we have a better shot being one of the two teams left standing in Worcester than Ann Arbor. Even if the NCAA decides not to consider travel considerations, UNH will probably be one of the top teams in the East. I would definitely feel better about facing UNH in Worcester than being in SCSU, Denver, or Michigan's bracket in Anby Robb - Hockey
Re: Letter to Harvard Coach - 22 years ago
Wow. When I saw the title to the thread, I thought, "Good - someone is going to write a letter to Harvard apologizing for the Cornell fans' behavior during and after the game." Boy, was I in for a shock. Your letter disgusts me. Cornell fans ought to be ashamed of each and every fish, bottle, and cup thrown after the national anthems. Even Schafer was able to recognize the vilenessby Robb - Hockey
Re: Strength of Schedule - 22 years ago
Keith, I think you are right in terms of RPI - losses will balance out wins in the opponents' (and opps' opps') win percentage. However, it does matter who is a TUC and who is not. IF we beat HU and DC next time out, we will have at least a .500 record against all ECAC teams, so we'd like them ALL to end up as TUCs. If we lose to HU/DC, we'd like them to end up below .500 so that our losses tby Robb - Hockey
