Re: Fish - 16 years ago
If I remember correctly, the 2003 Harvard game was highlighted by an octopus and a large walleye. You have to give the octopus respect. I have always felt that a rather entertaining animal to end up on the ice would be a live lobster or crab...by mnagowski - Hockey
Re: Harvard's new aid plan - 16 years ago
I think if you limit your population to households with college-aged children, $50k is a pretty good threshold for "lower income" and $50-150k works as middle income. $50k happens to be the rough threshold for students on Pell Grants. Typically, at all of the top private schools you would be hard pressed to find any "lower income" students paying more than $5k out of pocketby mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

That's very much a debatable proposition and fundamentally a subjective question. I certainly don't disagree.by mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Harvard's new aid plan - 16 years ago
The Pell Grant figures are pretty widely distributed. The big question is the distribution of students from families with incomes between $50k and $150k at these schools.by mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

Jim HylaIn fact while I'm posting this, CNN is doing a story about a patient whose insurance company canceled her policy once she had the diagnosis of cancer made. It's easy to find terrible examples in any system, but there must be some reason why the rest of the world has a different system than we do. Because the rest of the world is a little bit more reasonable and rational than the U.S.?by mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

Did he select an alternate college by any chance? While he may have gotten rejected by Arts, he may have been accepted by AAP or ILR (both of which have very strong history programs and typically a slightly weaker applicant pool). This is the first year the University has had the primary/alternate admissions scheme, and I am surprised by the number of applicants who haven't taken advantage of it.by mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: Harvard's new aid plan - 16 years ago
Last year Cornell spent around $115 million on undergraduate aid... around $40 million from the endowment and dedicated gifts and another $70 million (this is the $69 million Harding refers to) in "general fund" expenses (read: from other student's tuition dollars). The math here is a little fuzzy, but hear me out: I think to reach a Harvard or Princeton no tuition policy, Cornellby mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: Recruiting and Financial Aid - 16 years ago
Josh '99Sounds like an open admission of the already-existing unspoken reality. Has there ever been anything documenting the sort of practices you allude to? I find it hard to believe that the word wouldn't get out if there was some sort of gross evasion of policies going on. There's an excellent discussion of the various ramifications of these policy changes taking place here:by mnagowski - Hockey

In the final installment in the series, Perlin suggests that some of the other Ivies may be moving to a more "merit-based" system of financial aid. Noel agreed, and offered another reason why other schools can offer better packages. “I fear that the more attractive the candidate, the more creative and generous the schools may be in packaging aid for the student,” he said. Part II in the series: By providing its own broader and more generous standard of “financial need,” Cornell coaches, Noel and Bilsky agree the “Big Three” are establishing an athletic superiority in violation the Ivy Statement of Principles that mandate competitive balance. Re: Recruiting and Financial Aid - CU lowest per capita Ivy endowment - 16 years ago
BillCharltonBased on these data, it appears that the "poorer" schools will have a hard time competing with the richer schools. After you factor in Cornell's support from the State of New York as 'quasi-endowment', the disparities remain. Princeton, Harvard, and Yale are really an order of magnitude richer than Brown, Penn, Cornell, and Columbia. Dartmouth is sui generis, somewhere inby mnagowski - Hockey

RichHCool. So we can vote for Cornell this November, right? Looks like it will either be Columbia or the Naval Academy. Turning the conversation back to athletics, but not necessarily hockey, it's interesting to note that the director of the Ivy League is going to retire next year. This, combined with all of the recent financial-aid changes and its impact on athletics, suggests that it mayby mnagowski - Hockey

Jacob 03There's something to be said for having a beautiful campus, but it's expensive. The apples and flowers part wasn't far off. Hockey teams are expensive too. But I suspect a lot of us wouldn't have such an allegiance to Cornell if there wasn't a hockey team. It's easy to quantify a return on investment for Notre Dame or Michigan football, but when it comes to Ivy athletics, there are a lby mnagowski - Hockey

Jim HylaTrotskymetaezraIt's become pretty evident that antitrust laws are certainly posing a big problem for those who want to see parity in the league.? The problem came about when the group of (whatever number of schools) was taken to court and told they could not continue to agree to offer the same package to all accepted applicants. The group used to get together, once all applicants werby mnagowski - Hockey
Recruiting and Financial Aid - 16 years ago
The Sun is running an excellent article on the impact that the recent sea change in financial aid policies at certain institutions will have on Ivy recruiting. Many coaches note that these changes in aid packages have been occurring slowly over the years, but became far more drastic in the past year as the financial aid offerings improved. “How they’re packaging all their students — notby mnagowski - Hockey
