This is going to mess up McKee's second place in goals against. (Seems as if we're more worried about LeNeveu's record being undone by Jim Howard than the current goalie being No. 2 in the nation in goals-against.)by billhoward - Hockey

Thanks for all the offers to send updates. It sure made the Nets' near-collapse then resurrection against the Bulls more palatable. BTW I saw someone 2 rows in from courtside wearing a Cornell hockey jersey. The man has his priorities straight. Re: Around the Rest of Hockey This Weekend - 20 years ago
Imagine Cornell meeting Maine in the playoffs and having the chance to push Howard's GAA average up above 1.20. My quick calculation says if Howard gives up 2 goals in his next start, that's 21 goals allowed in 1032:19 (approx 17.2 games) or 1.22GA. 3GA would push him to 1.28. Well, we still have most of Marinaro's records intact, the yards-per-game ones. Obviously not total yardage, nowby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Clarkson 1 @ Cornell 5: Post game - 20 years ago
Too bad the story didn't explain the "one incident with the goaltender" in enough detail for most readers to understand McKee got his mask knocked off by Clarkson. The story read, >>> The game started to get chippy in the second period as well, as frustration crept in for the Golden Knights and Cornell tried to stand up to it. But it never got completely out of hand. >&by billhoward - Hockey

There is no perfect Personal Video Recorder yet. Tivo is best but the new Replay 5500 series is not much different. You have to pay a monthly service fee of $10 or a lifetime fee of $300 and it's lifetime of that unit, not your lifetime. If the unit goes belly up after the warranty, you're hosed. You can upgrade to a bigger hard disk and keep the guide license intact. (see weakness.com for upgradby billhoward - Hockey

Tonight is my kid's school trip to the Meadowlands to see the Nets play. (They didn't get enough interest in the Devils so that trip was cancelled last month. Sheesh.) I would be grateful if some kind soul could send me scoring updates of the Cornell-Clarkson game, where I really should be. Pls reply to my email, billhoward at comcast.net, if you can help me set this up. - Billby billhoward - Hockey

Re: No Cornell on TV - 20 years ago
If you remember last year's ECACs and NCAAs on TV, you remember how precious few advertisers there were. You saw the same commercial for one bank and one beer, I think it was, maybe 20 times. That underscored how hard it was to find sponsors. Maybe the profile of CSTV will help lift up the minor majors such as hockey, lacrosse, maybe wrestling. Problem is, part of the year you need CSTV on foby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Cornell 16th in PWR after Fri night - 20 years ago
To host an NCAA regional means the school agrees to be the sponsor and do some of the background donkey-work. It does not mean you get to host it in your home rink. Thus Cornell could as easily be host of a regional in Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, or Albany as could Canisus or RPI. If as Michigan does you host them every couple years and your team qualifies for the NCAA say every other year, theby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Cornell 16th in PWR after Fri night - 20 years ago
Problem with Cornell playing in the ECAC is we have the easiest schedule year in, year out because Cornell doesn't don't have to play Cornell. The ECAC as a group did not do a lot against non-ECAC teams. Colgate could get an at large big losing to Cornell in the ECAC finals better, I think, than Cornell could losing to Colgate in the finals. Re: New Arena for Cornell - 20 years ago
This is the eLynah fans' plan to build a new rink, not Cornell's? I came back to Lynah for the Princeton-Yale weekend for the first time in a long while (last time, Dick Bertrand was still coach) and it seemed about the same raffishly charming and worn building, even down to Mike Teeter manning the goal judge booth. (And the same tattered hockey pants, but I mentioned that in a different thread.)by billhoward - Hockey
Re: New Arena for Cornell - 20 years ago
A number of press boxes are in the end zone - Princeton, BU's old (well, not that old) arena. Terrible place to watch the game. While it may not sadden you to see the media stuck in lousy seats, subconsciously they'll grouse about the place more. That's not good for the hockey program.by billhoward - Hockey
Re: All Ivy Teams Announced - 20 years ago
Ihnacak *could* have won ROTY without being first or second team All-Ivy (compared to McKee being second team All-Ivy and not ROTY) if the voters felt the depth of quality among forwards was so great that someone not among the first or second team of forwards was still better than a second-team goalie or defenseman. That's how it could have happened.by billhoward - Hockey

Re: LeNeveu's GAA record in jeopardy? - 20 years ago
1973: Murray, Cornell's huge All-America defenseman (talk about same-name deja vu in reverse) blasts in a slap shot from the point 40 seconds in the third period to make it 5-2 Cornll over Wisconsin and there's no way, no way, you're thinking, that Cornell won't go all the way. Basically, that was it for Cornell's glory in the NCAAs until McEneaney and French teamed up in 1976 and 1977 and brouby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Panoramic Photos of a Full Lynah? - 20 years ago
You've hit on an interesting question - who gets paid fees if you take pictures at a sporting event? Newspaper photographers in the past supplemented their incomes by selling prints for, say, $10 a pop, from sports events or fires or whatnot. That's small potatos. Now, the NY Times wants to sell prints by the hundreds of sporting events and Major League Baseball wants a cut of the action. Or Babeby billhoward - Hockey
Re: LeNeveu's GAA record in jeopardy? - 20 years ago
Heh! I'm off by about one year on every circa 1970 hockey event. Of couse, President Bush is having trouble accounting for a year of so of his life back then, also. I completely blanked on the BU - Cornell game. Shock does that to you. My partial recall is that year Cornell beat BU during the regular season, then BU turned the trick on Cornell come playoff time. Amazing how long that's been - whyby billhoward - Hockey
Re: LeNeveu's GAA record in jeopardy? - 20 years ago
You're right. I forgot that he ended his career as Dick Bertrand's player in the lost season of 1970-71, not as Dick Bertrand's teammate. At least he didn't have to suffer through 1972's horror of being up 5-2 on Wisconsin with 19 minutes to go in the NCAA semis and lose 6-5 in OT. I think that was the end of the Big Red dynasty.by billhoward - Hockey
Re: LeNeveu's GAA record in jeopardy? - 20 years ago
If Jim Howard, no relation, gives up 2 goals in his next game, the average goes up about .07 to 1.35. If he gets one shutout and plays no more during the year, he'd finish around 1.18. He's played 14.2 games (852.19, 18GA) counting OT and each one goal game he plays in a 60-minute game drops his average roughly to 1.25, 1.23, 1.22. In the playoffs, except maybe in an early round, I don't think yoby billhoward - Hockey

Very impressive display of school spirit. I think if you made the lettering bolder still it would show up even better on TV or in Sports Illustrated. Is there a small Cornell Big Red Bear decal you could apply, too? You don't want someone to think it's Nebraska Big Red.
