Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Boston U. here!! ... Fish?? - 21 years ago
Actually, I'm not too worried about firing up the other team -- I think this is usually outweighed by the benefits of psyching up our team and the crowd. I'm just saying that I think we can be a little more inventive and clever than just throwing different objects on the ice. If, for example, the entire crowd chose to dress like Jack Parker, that would be scary, but kinda cool. (Clearly I'mby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Boston U. here!! ... Fish?? - 21 years ago
Regarding a "tradition" for BU, keep in mind that they are already featured in a cheer that is performed at practically every game. In addition, there is a special version of that cheer for games against BU. I'm not sure we should get into the "rut" of needing to throw things on the ice for it to be a tradition. Especially when you consider the risk of penalties to the teamby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Boston U. here!! ... Fish?? - 21 years ago
Fish should be reserved for Harvard. It is a school-specific tradition and shouldn't be applied to all opponents from Boston. And I agree that the pause after a single chant of "Screw BU" can be very effective. But it may be difficult to achieve this effect if we can't convince the majority of the crowd to give it a try. I've been thinking about the crowd/ticket situation. I woulby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Tickets for Games at Lynah - 21 years ago
According to the season ticket renewal form: Single game tickets go on sale Oct. 16. So, if you know in October which games you'll want to attend over the winter, you can give it a shot. The letter doesn't say what time tickets go on sale, or whether there's usually a long line, etc. Good luck!by Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Alert--Season ticket renewal - 21 years ago
Anne and I have gotten our tix that way for about a decade. Did you have to say it like that? Sheesh. I believe that becoming a CHA member is the only way to get season tickets if you're not a student or affiliated with the university in some way (unless, of course, you have a friend who is willing and able to get tickets for you). The basic CHA membership is $35/year, plus the cost of tickby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Alert--Season ticket renewal - 21 years ago
I found my copy of the May 2002 newsletter, and it only gives the PO box for sending the membership form. However, it does give phone numbers for the CHA president, VPs, and treasurer (I'm not sure whether it's okay to post the numbers here, so send me an e-mail if you need them). The treasurer is listed as Sue Detzer, who also runs the Cornell hockey office. Personally, I'd just skip straigby Anne 85 - Hockey
Alert--Season ticket renewal - 21 years ago
FYI, I just received my season ticket renewal form in the mail. The deadline for renewing tickets is Sept 6, and the ticket upgrade date is Sept 18. Single game tickets go on sale Oct. 16. Can the regular season be far behind?by Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Alumni game - 21 years ago
I have to get to one of these games. I'd love to see Coach play again. Who was in goal (especially if Duffus wasn't)?by Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: NHL draft - 21 years ago
I don't think leaving early has really helped JMP any... Depends how you figure it. JMP did get the money, and he has had at least a "cup of coffee" in the majors, so he may not be too unhappy with his choice. Who knows what would have happened if he had stayed at Cornell. And Cornell's not going anywhere, so he can always come back and get the degree if he wants to. I am not, ofby Anne 85 - Hockey

Re: ECAC Reportedly Considering Moving Tournament to Albany - 22 years ago
I'd say "creepy" is the perfect adjective for Albany. Especially the area around the arena. I think the only defense will be to set up our own little "Cornell hockey town" -- preferably at a decent hotel not too far from the rink and near a nice bar -- and hope that some decent movies are out in March. Drat -- you mean we might NEVER get back to Mudpuddles?by Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Official article on recruits - 22 years ago
5 months until I start living a meaningful life once again. That's sad (but so true). I wonder if the new goalie pronounces his name in the French manner -- it could make for some fun cheering. Has anyone mentioned whether the new twins are identical? The heights and weights are the same....by Anne 85 - Hockey

I know, I know. WSoS = wet sack of sh*t As in the late night WFAN caller who thinks the Mets should trade Darryl Strawberry for a WSoS. (Sorry I couldn't think of a more current example. I don't listen to sports call-in shows of my own free will.)by Anne 85 - Hockey
Damian Rocke Award - 22 years ago
Sorry, John. I didn't mean to step on your toes. I don't think you need to worry about competition for the name, though. Greg hasn't shown any interest in adding the Rocke award to TBRW. And Bill, I don't think of the proposed award as negative. Rocke single-handedly made an otherwise dreadful game somewhat entertaining (and fortunately no-one was injured). As for Jiri, the point isn't thaby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: TBRW? Awards - 22 years ago
Certainly Hornby's name springs to mind when you think about "scrappiness and effort" or perhaps "determination in a supporting role." The "problem" is there were too many players who deserved recognition this season. I'm not sure a Dan (penalty-box) Dufresne award is the answer, however. I for one felt that Hornby was much more selective with his hitting this yeaby Anne 85 - Hockey

Re: Alumni - 22 years ago
A post on the Red vs. White thread says that "The alumni game is July 12." The March issue of Faceoff! (the newsletter for the Cornell Hockey Association) does not give a date for this event, but it does state that the Awards banquet will be Friday, April 12, in case anyone is interested.by Anne 85 - Hockey

Re: 1st round: Quinnipiac - 22 years ago
> KRACH's odds scale has them as 27:1 underdogs You think that if we played them 28 times we would go 27-1? Realistically? I absolutely state that whatever rating system puts us on top is the one that makes the most sense to me -- since all the ratings systems are equally silly. Re: RPI/Union - 22 years ago
Section 1 at RPI is essentially like being seated in Section H at Lynah. But the view is worse. There's a walkway between the boards and the first row of seats, and the incline isn't sufficient to give everyone a decent view of the ice. In addition, the whole section looks like the temporary risers you put up in the elementary school gym for graduation and assemblies. All in all, not my fby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Cornell VS Clarkson , Saturday Feb 23rd - 22 years ago
FWIW, from Section C, the "blatant hit from behind" by Murray didn't look so blatant, but it occurred in the dangerous area within a foot or two of the boards (and in front of the Clarkson bench), so I don't have a problem with the call. I am a little surprised, however, that the play could be seen so clearly from Section O. I would have called the "stay down" cross-check,by Anne 85 - Hockey

Re: joe nieuwendyk - 22 years ago
Okay, I can't resist. I don't really remember much about Cullen's play, but I have very vivid memories of my friend Sarah, who played hockey herself, constantly exhorting him to move his ass. One of my all-time favorite players was Randy MacFarlane (#15). As I recall, he skated beautifully and was a terrific stick-handler. My favorite part was watching him skate circles around the other teamby Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Perspective - 22 years ago
RE Murray -- if you will recall, he had a knee injury last season that kept him out of a bunch of games late in the season. He occasionally looks pretty gimpy on the ice, and often seems to be favoring one leg as he skates to the bench, so my guess would be that he aggravated the old injury but is unwilling to miss any games.by Anne 85 - Hockey
Re: Best time and place to buy ECAC tourny tix - 22 years ago
I think there's some confusion here. Some people seem to be talking about tickets for the ECAC Tournament at Lake Placid, while others are discussing tickets for the ECAC Q-finals. Cornell season ticket holders were allowed to pre-order tickets for any Q-final games at Lynah. The tickets were $1.00 off the regular price and could be returned if Cornell did not host the Q-finals. A block ofby Anne 85 - Hockey

Re: Dartmouth - 22 years ago
To answer your questions anyway (even though I understand you may not be able to make the Friday game), the best way to ensure getting a ticket in the Cornell section is to call the Cornell ticket office. If you don't live in Ithaca, you can order tickets over the phone. They will mail the tickets to you or, if necessary, have them held for you at will-call at the rink.
