Re: Way, Way OT: personal update - 18 years ago
Best of luck. It was good seeing you at the ECAC's and at UVM games when you were in VT. I have always been impressed at your willingness to continually travel so far since you moved to Texas. I am still in Vermont and probably will be for a long time if you are ever back around. Chrisby cth95 - Hockey

Re: OT: Watching TdF in Ithaca area - 18 years ago
IMHO, the Tour is far more exciting than NASCAR. First of all, the scenery is spectacular whether you are interested in the sport or not. On the surface, it is admittedly boring, but if you watch a few stages and listen to the commentary, the combination of strategy, strength, and endurance is pretty fascinating. This is particularly true of the mountains. It is amazing, for example, to watchby cth95 - Hockey
Re: Lehman to step down - 18 years ago
You've got that right that rankings don't move much. Cornell has been ranked between 10 and 14 almost every year since I applied in '89. I am pretty sure that the schools in front of it have not changed much, either. I certainly don't expect a jump to #5 in a year or two.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: Curious quote from NYT - 18 years ago
Class size may affect the rankings, but I don't think it is really that big of a deal. One of the best classes I have ever taken was Psych 101 with about 2,000 fellow Cornellians. In high school I took a Calc class with all of 2 other people and I couldn't figure out much at all because the teacher sucked. A year later I got an A in college with a far better instructor. My point is, tby cth95 - Hockey
Re: Redbud - Does size matter? - 18 years ago
This article confirms my memory that the Redbud area is no special forest. With large need for parking near campus more needs to go somewhere, and this area seems as good as any. The overlay in the link actually looks less intrusive than I had envisioned.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: Curious quote from NYT - 18 years ago
Definitely, thanks for the link so we could get a better idea of what is going on. It sounds like "David" on the adjoining Sun forum has a good head on his shoulders and is a very rational thinker. I am as much for open space and forest preservation as anyone (I live in Vermont so I can spend a lot of time in the mountains and have green space all around me), but if I remember correctby cth95 - Hockey
Re: Absolutely... - 19 years ago
I saw that, too. Apparently players who ended their careers pre-1965 were not technically employed by the league and therefore do not legally qualify for the benefits that players since then are able to get (or something like that). Of course, with the large amount of money players are making now and the relatively small amount of players left from the pre-1965 era, I don't think it would be toby cth95 - Hockey

Re: Attendance: lacrosse vs. hockey at Cornell - 19 years ago
Ok, I should have said one of the only relatively mainstream sports that I know almost nothing about (am actually learning a lot from these posts); i.e. never learned it in gym class like volleyball or badminton, for example, and it wasn't a common school sport or televised much like baseball, hockey, football, soccer, and basketball or even golf or tennis (which I have played at least a little oby cth95 - Hockey
Re: Attendance: lacrosse vs. hockey at Cornell - 19 years ago
One thing with Cornell sports attendance in general is definitely the unfortunate number of study nerds who think they will not get good enough grades if they ever leave a library except for class, eating, and sleeping. However, despite being a very big sports fan, I saw many hockey, basketball, and football games but only one lacrosse game when I was in school. One reason was a lack of publiciby cth95 - Hockey

Is INCH based on the east coast and USCHO in the midwest? We consistently have gotten more love and attention from INCH this year and I was just wondering if anyone knew why that is.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: [OT] VoIP experiences anyone? - 19 years ago
I don't have many details, but my mother seems happy with hers through Time Warner Cable Central New York. From the perspective of some one calling in, however, it often sounds echo-like, as if she was talking to me on a speaker phone. I have actually asked her a couple of times if she was on one. Apparently the connection sounds fine from her end.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: [OT LAX] Cornell lacrosse vs. Princeton - 19 years ago
All I can say is "Wow". Thank you for posting that insightful and inspirational article. I do not know much about lacrosse and have only followed Cornell because it is my alma mater. Now I will follow and root for them for much deeper reasons.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
Sorry guys, didn't mean to be so literal. I was just having some fun before things begin to even out. I would like to see some newer, creative slogans, however. Any ideas?by cth95 - Hockey
Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
Don't worry, every one can lighten up. I am just having fun doing a little trash talking and the Yankees numbers are so bad right now I had to post them. I am pretty sure they won't stay that way for long. On a side note, I have always thought that the "(insert big rival here) sucks" cheers are stale and often used at dumb times like when the favored team is tied or losinby cth95 - Hockey

Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
Agreed. Look at the success the Sox and Yanks have against almost everyone. This was also the Yanks' method of dealing with Pedro and getting to the bullpen even on days when Pedro was pitching very well.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
Certainly talent is almost always the number one key to success, with the exception of one-time deals such as when a more talented team takes an underdog too lightly. I think team "chemistry" is just one of many factors that leads to winning. I am not saying that it is the only ingredient (although it is probably a key in extreme cases like last year's ALCS), just that a positive attiby cth95 - Hockey
Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
Talent is definitely key and the Sox have plenty, but you can't tell me that the loose atmosphere created by guys like Millar and Ortiz wasn't crucial for the Sox to stay relaxed and thus comeback in the ALCS. Just look at the results of many big name players in their first few games with big media teams like Boston and New York. Most of them put too much pressure on themselves to be immediate sby cth95 - Hockey

Kudos (despite the award name and actual prize): Rubbermaid Player Of The Year Josh Gorges and Doug Murray were awarded the co-Rubbermaid Player of the Year for the 2004-05 season. The Barons introduced the “Rubbermaid Player of the Game†this season. At the end of each game, the player who provided the most durable and dependable performance was named the Rubbermaid Player of the Game.by cth95 - Hockey
Re: Knoepfli - 19 years ago
Cornell is becoming widely known. A Swiss friend of mine who is a big hockey fan asked me about Knoepfli before the playoffs were even over. He had heard his team was looking at Mike. Unfortunately, I think his team is SCB so he doesn't get to root for a Cornellian like I had hoped. I hadn't thought about a jersey. That would be pretty cool to get a Swiss Knoepfli jersey to wear in my drop-iby cth95 - Hockey
Re: OT: The Yankees - 19 years ago
It all comes down to management being smart enough to get good pitching and team players. After years of egotistical supersluggers with no team chemistry and mediocre pitching we finally have owners and management who know it takes some pitching and defense as well- not to mention having a bunch of decent players who together keep themselves focused yet light-hearted to make a great team on theby cth95 - Hockey
