Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Separated at birth? - 21 years ago
I don't think Matt has anything to worry about. Jacko won't look like that in a couple years...by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Jon Gleed - 21 years ago
(piling on, sorry...) Chris, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but if you really are "disappointed by how poorly we've done on man-advantages this season", I gotta say you're grading on an awfully tough curve. The Big Red is currently 27-of-110 on PP's, a 24.5% conversion rate, which is 9th in the NCAA. No, it's not as good as last year's 28% rate, and it drops to 21.3% ifby Give My Regards - Hockey

Guilty, I admit it. I was thinking, "oh god, did he go after the guy in the parking lot or something?" Don't DO that!by Give My Regards - Hockey

17 Dryden '68 (6 shutouts, 11 1 goal games) 14 Dryden '67 (4 shutouts, 10 1 goal games) 14 Cropper '70 (3 shutouts, 11 1 goal games) 12 Dryden '69 (4 shutouts, 8 1 goal games) Something ain't right here, because Dryden finished his Cornell career with 13 shutouts, and the above gives him 14. I'm going to guess that Cropper had one of the ones in '69. And one of the three shutouts in the 69-70by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Other Post Season Issues - 21 years ago
Greg and others, Check out . The regionals overlap, but the Northeast regional final starts at 8:00 pm on 3/29 in Worcester, while the East regional semis are scheduled for noon and 3:30 pm in Providence on the same day. So yes, assuming we don't have a bunch of OT's or dreadful weather, it will likely be possible to be at all six games.by Give My Regards - Hockey

Re: RULE ? - 21 years ago
There are tiebreaking procedures, listed here: As one who has wrestled with these for more years than I care to admit, I'd advise you to do yourself a favor: don't bother trying to apply them, as it gets very messy very quickly. John Whelan has/had an excellent "Hypothetical finish in the ECAC" page that showed the tiebreakers being applied. The link I have didn't work -- Johnby Give My Regards - Hockey

Well, this one's gotta be legit. Their name is spelled right in the headline.by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: - 21 years ago
Had me a bizarro moment during the speech and I'm hoping somebody might remember what was being talked about at that point. I had just finished watching a video (no, the speech wasn't my first priority, sorry), and in the process of switching the display/output/whatever from VCR to TV and then turning the TV off, I heard President George W. Bush speak a single word: "...mustard." Doby Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: OT: New ECAC Hockey Fans? - 21 years ago
Drat. I'm sure we could have gotten some good cheers/taunts out of that one, maybe reminiscient of Brooke Shields/Princeton or Jodie Foster/Yale eons ago...by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Caption Contest - 21 years ago
"The Power of PhotoShop: Note the clever way in which this image has been digitally altered, presumably by a Clarkson fan, by super-imposing a black disk-like object over a photograph of Cornell goaltender David LeNeveu reaching back to tap the post with his glove for luck..."by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Union, 1/17 - 21 years ago
Brian played Jason Vogel on defense for about half a season (92-93, ouch), not Ryan. Which actually wasn't all that bad a move, considering how few defensemen we had who were worthy of the name back then. Josh, please explain what the CENSORED is happy about that thought? I remember those days well and would rather notby Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: USA Today 1/13/2003 Poll - 21 years ago
If all you look at is overall record (and I'll bet at least a few voters do only that), well, Quinnipiac is 14-4-1, very similar to top-10 teams New Hampshire and Ohio State. And Q has actually won a couple of non-MAAC games this year! OK, they were over Bentley and AIC at their own tournament (Q Cup), but still... I am not saying I agree with this reasoning (far from it!) but I can see it.by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Coach Schafer on ESPN Radio Saturday - 21 years ago
Yeek, forgive me for trying to pretty up that link before. The article says Jeremy was a '91 grad. Now that you mention it, though, I thought he went to Yale.by Give My Regards - Hockey
Coach Schafer on ESPN Radio Saturday - 21 years ago
This may be common knowledge by now, but I haven't seen it posted here... Coach Schafer is slated to be on ESPN Radio's The Sporting Life with Jeremy Schaap this Saturday morning. More details at . I'm not familiar with The Sporting Life and don't know how often Schaap brings up college hockey, but with him being a former Cornellian, I suppose it was only a matter of time...by Give My Regards - Hockey

No surprise about Joey Harrington, but hey, I'd trade transcripts straight up with him if we could also trade salaries...by Give My Regards - Hockey

Re: Scoreboard - 21 years ago
Do they really have the "Make Some Noise" cheer in Lynah now? Please tell me its not true. Everything you've heard is true. The crowd, to its credit, ignored the prompts and continued to make noise whenever it damn well pleased. The only acknowledgement of the new scoreboard came in the second period, with a "scoooore-boooard" cheer (or prompt) when the operator was a bit lby Give My Regards - Hockey

Re: I love the ECAC... - 21 years ago
The article that it links to is factually correct, but the summary... well. Actually, from Vermont's point of view, the summary is probably accurate. Remember, they took most of the 1999-2000 season off (elephant walk), so they're a year behind the rest of the leagueby Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Three goals for 2002-03 - 21 years ago
#8, huh? To put this in a bit of a different perspective, Cornell was ranked 6th in the nation in at least one 1997-98 pre-season poll, after they had lost eight or nine players to graduation from the season before. In other words, ignore it. But we already knew that. On goals for the season: #1 Beat Harvard. That's a given, though I think you mean to say "Sweep Harvard." Aby Give My Regards - Hockey

Emergency preparedness - 21 years ago
Just heard on local radio that there's some sort of emergency preparedness seminar going on at Ithaca College. It's sort of a dry run for local emergency personnel; the instructors come up with some disaster scenarios and the students work through them. Today's scenario? A chemical attack at a Cornell hockey game...by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: The Mother of All Recruiting Classes - 21 years ago
Hmm, reminds me a bit of a team that had a similar recruiting class ten years ago. Not quite so many... 14 incoming players and one joining the team as a sophomore, having been ineligible the previous year. But I'm not particularly fond of reminiscing about that team that year, so let's just move on...by Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: TBRW? Awards - 22 years ago
The purist in me cringes at the idea of a potentially negative award for a member of our own team. Which is not to say that the accomplishments of players like Damian or Jiri aren't worth rememberingby Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: Hobey Baker - 22 years ago
On one hand, they're willing to give it to a defenseman, which is good; on the other hand, they might not want to give it to a defenseman two years in a row, which is bad. There's hope, though... defensemen have won the Hobey back-to-back once before, in 1983 (Harvard's Mark Fusco) and 1984 (Minnesota-Duluth's Tom Kurvers). Leopold was also a first-team All-American and a Hobey nominee last yeby Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: 1995 defeat of Princeton - 22 years ago
(And now, a potential stunner of another kind: It is quite conceivable that the once-again-defending-national-champion Princeton Tigers will miss the NCAA tournament this year! Not sure if a defending champ has ever done that before...) Just checked ovar at www.ncaachampionships.com, and only one NCAA men's lax champ has failed to make the tournament the following year. ... drum roll ... Cornby Give My Regards - Hockey
Re: April Fools! - 22 years ago
Reminds me of a particularly nasty one from the early '90s, back when the joke issue came out sometime in October. There was an article stating that major violations had been found in the Cornell hockey program and the NCAA had handed down the "death penalty", shutting the program down until the year 2000. I understand a couple of hockey players got hooked by that one and called the hby Give My Regards - Hockey

Re: All-Ivy Teams - 22 years ago
The stats on the Ivy League page are updated, except they still have LeNeveu with 6 goals allowed on the GAA page, rather than 8. Oh well, at least the GAA is right, and Lenny still leads the league. Wouldn't mind a single-malt scotch, especially if it were LeNeveu's age (and maybe even more so if it were mine ) And Beeeej... go away, or I'll smack you with my caneby Give My Regards - Hockey
