billhoward As with the Masters, A Tradition Like No Other -- Screwing North Schools (Army Excluded) Generally, Cornell Specifically, and Bowing to Hopkins, the Lax World Holy of Holies. As was documented in the book We Showed Baltimore, that type of favoritism is exactly what led to the formation of the NCAA Tournament.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Speaking of goalies, Brown's excellent goalie Caron is transferring to BU, so we'll most likely see him again at MSG.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - 1 year ago
upprdeck 2 games left In reg season. Brown who I hope we play on the RD better than we did vs Harvard. Princeton for the Ivy Reg season title most likely on SR day. They also lost 2 players for the season vs SU the other day. I watched Brown lose to Yale today 16-10. Brown jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but Yale led 9-8 at halftime and held Brown to 2 goals in the second half. Brown's faceby dbilmes - Other Sports

I don't know how good any of these players are, but Q has already landed 4 players from the transfer portal.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Wrestling 2022-23 - 1 year ago
Deadspin just published this long article about how Princeton is becoming a wrestling powerhouse, without a single mention of Cornell in the entire story. The article makes it sound like no Ivy team has ever become a national contender in wrestling. In any case, with an ambitious coach and big bucks backing from Wall Street, it sounds like Princeton will be our toughest rivals in the Ivies in theby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Who deserves 2023 D1 championship - 1 year ago
I posted this a few days ago in the Opponents thread, but it didn't get any reaction, so I'll post it here, since it ties in to this thread. This story from Forbes about Q's rise to a hockey powerhouse ends on this final note: The Bobcats aren’t satisfied with the status quo, though. Quinnipiac is set to begin a renovation of the hockey locker room and lounges, and alumni and donors are planby dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 @ Harvard 4/8/23 - 1 year ago
I was at the Yale-BU lacrosse game earlier this week and was chatting with the parent of a BU player. BU defeated Harvard earlier this season, and lost to Yale Tuesday 17-14 in a game which wasn't as close as the score indicated. In any case, he told me that Yale is definitely a better team than Harvard, and that Cornell shouldn't have any trouble against Harvard itself. Of course we know that doby dbilmes - Other Sports

Big article in Forbes about how Quinnipiac became a college hockey powerhouse. The bad news, but not a surprise, is that Q is going to be working on ways to get NILs for its players. Maybe the college hockey version of the University of Miami?by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Big Ed Marinaro memories - 1 year ago
A friend who collects baseball card, but also has some other sports cards from his childhood, gave me an Ed Marino card from 1974, his second season with the Vikings. He is listed as being 6-2, 210 pounds. The card says that he majored in Hotel Administration, and set 17 NCAA records at Cornell, including most yards gained in a career (4,715). It also notes that he had 40 carries for 281 yards anby dbilmes - Other Sports

Our game against Brown will be tougher than it looks if just go by won-loss records. Brown had suspended four seniors for a noise violation, and they returned this week to lead Brown to a victory over No. 6 Villanova.by dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: New athletic director Nicki Moore - 1 year ago
Here's another challenge for Cornell's first woman to serve as athletic director. Cornell is supposedly a progressive institution with a $9.8 billion endowment. Why should any members of our D1 women’s varsity sports teams have to train and live in school athletic apparel made for men?by dbilmes - Other Sports

BearLover Quinnipiac has now made the frozen four three times since the last time Cornell did. What a disgrace. Maybe we should get cheerleaders for our team, too.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: 2023 NCAA QF: Cornell vs BU - 1 year ago
In the big games late in the season, our lack of elite offensive talent showed up. We were shut out in 8 of the last 10 periods we played. Perhaps we would have done better if Steinburg had time to work himself back into the lineup. Our power-play also fizzled once the post-season began. We didn't have any 5-minute majors against Union to get it back on track.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Men's Basketball 22-23 - 1 year ago
With Miami advancing to the Elite Eight in the men's tournament, it's worth noting that back in December Cornell nearly beat Miami in Miami. The final score was 107-105 and the main reason Miami escaped with a win was due to Isiah Wong scoring a career-high 35 points.by dbilmes - Other Sports

ESPN announcers are as confused as Harvard. First they said Gibson had been pulled, then they said he hadn't. Apparently, he is still in game.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Harvard hockey in the news - 1 year ago
Harvard finally forced to do something, as reported by Boston Globe: Harvard has commissioned an independent review of the school’s women’s hockey program, after the Boston Globe in January reported wide-ranging abuse allegations, including hazing, under longtime coach Katey Stone. The review will be conducted by Katya Jestin, a former federal prosecutor who is co-managing partner of the lawby dbilmes - Hockey

Here's a list of ECAC players in Transfer Portal that was posted on Twitter earlier today. Michael Hodge (F, Union) Reid Leibold (F, RPI) James McIsaac (F, RPI) Henri Schreifels (F, RPI) Matthew Hubbarde (F, Dartmouth) Greg Japchen (D, Union)by dbilmes - Hockey

The continued success at a national level of the Cornell wrestling program is a truly impressive feat. To finish third in a sport dominated by big-time athletic powerhouses is a great accomplishment. And it's not like this year was a fluke. Thanks to the program Koll built up and Grey has inherited, Cornell is a national wrestling power nearly every year.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Re: Harvard hockey in the news - 1 year ago
There are a lot of causes for concern in this story. Obviously, the 200-page report on the investigation into the problem didn't shed the coach in a favorable light. Yet Colgate, whose AD at the time is now Cornell's AD, stood by the coach by refusing to fire her. In response, the university hired a Buffalo law firm that specializes in equality issues in women’s athletics to interview players, cby dbilmes - Hockey

adamw dbilmes Besides the fact that Yale's 5 SOG were the fewest by a team in a D-1 game in 20 years, things got nasty toward the end of the Yale-Q game. A Q player and a Yale player (Allain's son) received game misconducts (for kneeing and cross-checking), and Allain was given a 10-minute major for "abuse of officials." Re: New athletic director Nicki Moore - 1 year ago
Besides turning around the football program, our new AD has plenty of other challenges. This column in The Sun by a student-athlete paints a depressing picture of Cornell's sports facilities and blasts the relocation of the baeball field from central campus. "Collapsing pools. Broken and molding locker rooms. A legacy team being pushed from central campus. These are just some of the milby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: ECAC QF Game 1: Clarkson at Cornell - 1 year ago
Cornell blocked 8 shots in the first period. Hopefully, Cornell can possess the puck more at even strength the rest of the game. And you know Clarkson is going to get some power play chances before the night is over.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Harvard hockey in the news - 1 year ago
Now The Athletic has a long article (paywall) about problems in the Harvard women's hockey program. It will be interesting to see if Harvard continues to stand by the coach. This type of publicity won't hurt the overall image of Harvard, but it's going to make recruiting players for the women's hockey program more of a challenge. Here's an excerpt: Over the last month, The Athletic spoke to morby dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Women 2023-24 and beyond - 1 year ago
ESPN just wrote about how there are only 37 D-1 women's hockey teams, while there are 62 men's teams. Most of the Michigan schools, for example, which have men's teams don't have women's teams. That helps explain why the women's D-1 tournament only has 11 teams. As it is, that's nearly one-third of the teams.by dbilmes - Hockey

Trotsky You could fix basketball by giving extra foul shots for multiple fouls within a certain interval. Also, basketball should get one time out per half, period. The TV networks rely on the timeouts for commercial breaks, especially in the NCAA Tournament when the timeouts seem to last forever.by dbilmes - Hockey
