Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Women 2023-24 - 7 months ago
Cornell was picked to finish 4th in the preseason coaches' poll. Colgate was the unanimous pick to finish on top, with their exception of the Colgate coach, who was prohibited from voting for his own team, giving us a bone by voting for Cornell for No. 1. Rory Guilday was voted the preseason All-ECAC team.by dbilmes - Hockey
Re: Season Tickets (now with booze?) - 7 months ago
RichH arugula upprdeck so if you went to that site you would have no idea which game is which night.. Funny that we make fun of Harvard for jacking up the tickets for the Cornell game when we are doing the same thing. Wrong. We expect a higher single-game ticket price for their Cornell game. Most league opponents have done that for years, knowing we actually show up and will pay. It’s the facby dbilmes - Hockey

I just got an email from Harvard telling me there is a presale on tickets for the Cornell game, which has sold out seven years in a row.by dbilmes - Hockey

billhoward Early 1980s I was at some quasi-sports, quasi-political event in Boston. Talked to Bobby Orr. He lists at 6-0 in NHL bios. I am 5-7. I looked him pretty much straight in the eyes. Orr made the most of whatever height he really was. Maybe 5-9 or 5-10. Maybe the height was how tall he was when he was in his skates!by dbilmes - Hockey

Re: Cornell football 2023 - 8 months ago
This press release sums up the expectations for the Archer years. As long as we finish higher in the standings than was predicted, the season will be a success. If Cornell finishes in 6th place in the Ivies, we can consider it another successful season! Our opening Ivy opponent, Yale, received 13 of 16 first-place votes. "The Big Red football team will be in position to prove the experts wrby dbilmes - Other Sports

Not much activity among Ivies in transfer portal. Interesting to see that lacrosse players aren't as eager to transfer to Q as hockey players are!by dbilmes - Other Sports

underskill Four of this school's last five captains have (or will be going to) played for Cornell. That's a good pipeline for us.by dbilmes - Hockey

scoop85 Potential star goalie Annalise Bergmann posted the other day that she’s accelerating her matriculation and will be in Ithaca this fall. She’ll almost certainly be the starter from day 1. That's good news since that was our weakest position last season.by dbilmes - Hockey

Dartmouth is getting an upgrade to its athletic facilities with a record-setting gift, although the article in the student paper doesn't say exactly how much the gift is for.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Chase Ierlan is going to be the goalie for Hopkins next season. He ends up playing again for Millman, who recruited him and coached him at Cornell for the start of his career.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Sean Kirwan, the offensive coordinator for Virgina, is the new head coach at Dartmouth. It's interesting that Dartmouth fired Brendan Callahan as coach even though Dartmouth just had its first .500 season in 15 years. By those standards, Archer, our football coach, is lucky he's not coaching at Dartmouth! Kirwan was an assistant coach at Brown for two years, during which Brown won two Ivy titlesby dbilmes - Other Sports

Who are we rooting for? Or rooting against? Or do we just not care? Meanwhile, two Princeton middies have transferred to Syracuse for next season. They were both seniors this season.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Unless Princeton rallies in the final period, the Ivies are going to be 0-3 in this year's tourney. Quite a contrast from last year.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Watching the Yale-Georgetown game, the ESPN announcers must be broadcasting from somewhere off-site. It's pouring and the weather looks miserable every time they show the fans in the stands, and they haven't mentioned anything at all about the wet conditions. You have to believe that if they were there in person they would at least acknowledge it. I was watching the Mets game in Washington beforeby dbilmes - Other Sports

CU77 Massey gives Cornell a 61% chance of winning, by a most-likely score of 14-13: And Massey has Princeton beating Penn, 12-11. So basically the Ivy games are both toss-ups.by dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - 11 months ago
Swampy CU77 Looking too far ahead, Cornell will need to play as well as possible, and wish a dash of luck, to have a chance against any of the top 4 in the quarterfinals. Fortunately, one can say the same thing about the top 4 teams. They're all good enough to win the whole shebang. So a team that plays up to its ability and has a bit of luck has a great chance of winning. Unlike last year, wheby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2023 - 11 months ago
Yale is going to be a tough foe on Friday. Even though Cornell beat Yale easily during the regular season, that was six weeks ago. Yale has a 5-game winning streak during which it has outscored its opponents 88-52. I've seen them play in person twice and their offense is explosive, especially in transition.by dbilmes - Other Sports

Al DeFlorio woodpile So much for predictions, though I doubt many could have forseen the throttling that Adler laid on young Coulter. It will be interesting to see what the Princetonian clairvoyants will say should there be a rematch next Sunday. You would have to believe that Adler has taken up residence in the poor kid's head rent-free. Princetonian has yet to print an article on last Saturdaby dbilmes - Other Sports

Re: Winningest Ivy schools: Princeton, Harvard, Penn, Cornell - 1 year ago
Trotsky Princeton and Harvard together account for almost half of all titles. Money buys titles, indeed. Not necessarily. If we're talking about wealth related to athletic achievement, Yale is an under-achiever. It has the second-highest endowment, behind only Harvard, yet ranks 5th, one spot behind Cornell, in Ivy titles since 1973.by dbilmes - Other Sports

mike1960 One of the things I loved about DeLuca's defenses is that the slides were vicious. They landed like hammers, and the ball usually found the ground. Sometimes I think we hesitate with the slides, but they seemed to come stronger in the second half (what I saw of the second half) in the Army game. That's something I'm going to be watching for against Brown. What will you be looking for? Brby dbilmes - Other Sports
Re: Cornell Lacrosse at Army 4/15/23 - 1 year ago
Attendance figures at a lot of these events is suspect. Yale lacrosse, for example, encourages you to buy your tickets online. When I got to the game Saturday, the scanner couldn't pick up the code for my ticket off my phone, so the attendant just had me show him the date on the ticket and then waved me in. So my presence was never acknowledged in the official attendance, unless Yale was just traby dbilmes - Other Sports

billhoward As with the Masters, A Tradition Like No Other -- Screwing North Schools (Army Excluded) Generally, Cornell Specifically, and Bowing to Hopkins, the Lax World Holy of Holies. As was documented in the book We Showed Baltimore, that type of favoritism is exactly what led to the formation of the NCAA Tournament.by dbilmes - Other Sports

upprdeck 2 games left In reg season. Brown who I hope we play on the RD better than we did vs Harvard. Princeton for the Ivy Reg season title most likely on SR day. They also lost 2 players for the season vs SU the other day. I watched Brown lose to Yale today 16-10. Brown jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but Yale led 9-8 at halftime and held Brown to 2 goals in the second half. Brown's faceby dbilmes - Other Sports
