Re: Tampa Bay wins the cup - 19 years ago
Adam: Are you suggesting that the NHL should contract some cities here, and start a few franchises in Europe (like Stockholm, Helsinki , Prague and Moscow), It would be a bitch for TV coverage, but I think that would be a great idea. Can you just picture them parading the Cup through Red Square? I don't think it'll happen in my lifetime, but it would be neat to see. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: [OT] What Is the Rarest Single-Game Feat in Sports? - 19 years ago
The word "nationally" eliminates the 1989 football game. You can be sure that was regional coverage. But what about last years' NCAA semi vs UHN? Wasn't that on ESPN? Or was it tape delayed? JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Speaking for Philly, I disagree, too. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: Article on schools applying for ECAC membership - 19 years ago
But you could start an "Ivy League....knew better...Ivy League...knew better" cheer if we beat an Ivy school. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: Article on schools applying for ECAC membership - 19 years ago
I don't care who's in the conference as long as that confernce is as competitive as the current conference or preferably more so. And yes, that means if the Ivy league forces the ECAC to be non-competitive, I fully support Cornell leaving the Ivy League. Always have. Always will. It is possible for a college to maintain academic standards and competitive teams. Just not in the self indulgeby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: Article on schools applying for ECAC membership - 19 years ago
Under no circumstances should we have the Ivy League as a separate conference. It would make hockey the same as basketball. Sorry, Penn and Princeton may win the Ivy League on a regular basis, but there ain't no way they're ever going to win more than one game in the NCAA's in a given year. And what would you rather: an Ivy autobid followed by a crushing loss in the first round, because theby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Then there's Lou Lamoriello. An asshole of a coach at Providence in the 70's, but a hell of GM with jersey.by Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: Cornell pre-season rank 2004-2005 - 20 years ago
If the Leafs win tonight, and I hope they do, I will be rooting for Joe to do well against the Flyers. However, I will be rooting for his team to lose. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

You said it, John. It's a long time until fall. Enjoy your summer, and for those of us whose team in still alive, the NHL playoffs. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: "The Wayne Gretzky of lacrosse" - 20 years ago
Sorry, Roy. Most NHLers usse the composite sticks. I think a lot of college players use them too. A co-worker of mine who coaches high school and midget hockey says you're even seeing them at that level. Why anyone else who doesn't make NHL kind of money would spend a few hundred bucks on a stick that will break so easily is beyond me, but you see them doing it. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Don't forget in last year's stats the games he played at the juniors. That narrows the difference even more. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: [Slightly OT] MIT's got our back - 20 years ago
Not entirely true. I know for a fact that GPA is used as an initial filter in recruiting new college grads by some at my company. Same at my company. Unless of course you belong to some desired minority group they're actively recruiting. Then, standards be damned. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
Re: [Slightly OT] MIT's got our back - 20 years ago
Wow. 45% get A's and 65% get B+ or better. I hope it's not like that at Cornell now (it sure wasn't when I was there). JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

That's just Bob Clarke's pro-Canadian, anti-anywhere else bias. Personally, if I was getting 1.2 million to play more games that I would in college, I'd take it, too. JHby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey
OT: Clarke's Stupidity - 20 years ago
I've tried for several years to get a "Clarke must go!" cheer going at the last game of the playoffs for the Flyers. For some reason, it doesn't catch on, despite most of the fans acknowledging that Clarke is the problem. I'm going to tommorrow night's game, and I can tell you if Esche gives up some of those cream puffs he's been letting in the past few games, he will get seriouslyby Jeff Hopkins '82 - Hockey

Re: mouthpiece rule - 20 years ago
The mouthpiece stories remind me of Rob Gemmel '79. Robbie was missing his four front teeth already and saw no point in using a mouthpiece, but was required by the ECAC to have one. He used to play with one side of his mouthpiece tucked into his cheek and the other sticking backward outside his mouth. Completely non-functional, but he did have a mouthpiece.
