Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Bracketology Starts - 6 years ago
KGR11 BearLover KGR11 I checked your math, 88% for a single game is correct. But if we're the #1 team in the ECAC, we wouldn't be playing against the middle of the pack; we'd be playing against the worst team left, so the highest team we'd play is #8. On average, we're probably playing #9. Sorry, I meant "middle of the pack" as in the PWR, not the ECAC, because I was talking about us bby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Opponents News 2: Hockey's the Reason for the Season - 6 years ago
Iceberg Q didn't look very good on Tuesday but they were good enough to wallop Clarkson tonight apparently. Q sounds like a dangerous team. They've got terrible goaltending numbers and one of the worst shooting percentages in the NCAA to go along with it, but they're among the best on close possession metrics. I've heard really mixed reviews of their play from people on this board, so I suspectby Tom Lento - Hockey

I clearly missed that part of your post. I blame Twitter for my inability to pay attention to more than one sentence. I don’t use Twitter, but I’m going to blame it anyway.by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Colgate vs. Cornell home-and-home 1/19-20 - 6 years ago
I’m pretty sure Cornell was #1 in PWR at the start of the 2003 NCAA tournament. Not sure if there’s a reliable week by week history anywhere, but you could probably dig up end of season ratings from USCHO or something. If the links are relatively consistent you might be able to use archive.org to get some of that data.by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Yet another collegetown bar bites the dust - 6 years ago
French Rage And while the Dutch Goose is a nice place to grab burgers and beer and watch Stanford beat USC at The Coliseum, it's not really a bar in the classic sense (more of a bar and grill) and it's more of a local place that college students happen to go to occasionally rather than a student place. The Dutch Goose is clearly deserving, if only because of the deviled eggs...by Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead

BearLover If someone ever has the time, it'd be awesome to learn how big an advantage home ice is in college hockey. Someone tried to do this at some point years back and I think it was a measurable fraction of a goal in the men's game and neutral in the women's game. This was for all games, though, not neutral-site, so it's not clear how much of the advantage has to do with getting the last liby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Union @ Lake Placid 03/17/17 - 7 years ago
marty JasonN95 How was the Lake Placid crowd? Certainly looked fuller on tv than the Joe for the Big 10 tournament. Crowd in the evening was good, not great. I'd estimate 60+% full. Seemed like few Union fans until they scored. They roared for a bit and then went back into their funk. Sounded like they didn't have a lot to cheer about. :D Go Red!by Tom Lento - Hockey

Swampy But since such considerations have been absent from the discussion thus far, I have the impression that the predictions are essentially point estimates rather than interval estimates (with some plausibly associated probability distribution) -- the famous "margin of error" routinely misrepresented and misunderstood by the media when reporting survey data. Re: Clarkson @ Cornell 03/10-3/12?/17 - 7 years ago
As usual I didn't get to watch the game. Looked like Clarkson was firing a lot more shots, both on goal and otherwise, and not just on the PP (where Cornell had the advantage). Was that indicative of the run of play?by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
adamw Tom LentoNow, that doesn't mean the model would be better, and how to adjust it correctly is the hard part - there are whole bodies of literature about this. One way is to do it empirically - you've got a lot of college hockey playoff history to use, and you can simulate all manner of different models and test their predictions against the observed distributions. Even just 10 years * N teamby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
adamw BearLover I don't know enough about the model/KRACH/etc. to say anything especially productive, but I will say that, as a casual observer, the 98% number, the 91% number from a different model, and the 85% number from the Matrix before the RPI game all failed the eye test. If I had to guess why, it's because KRACH, as adamw said, is meant to be descriptive of what has occurred rather thanby Tom Lento - Hockey

Re: Looking Ahead - 7 years ago
Trotsky Presumably it is still possible to have a 4-way tie for first. Yes, there are several paths, although of course at least one tie is required. Here's one that involves the current top 4 winning all but one game against teams 5-12 (the one exception being a Union draw, potentially vs. QC): Cornell and SLU tie, Cornell beats Clarkson, Union, and RPI. Chris '03 Trotsky Kozier got seriously hurt; I didn't recall that Ladouceur did. I remember him busting up his knee against a Canadian school. Thought it happened two years in a row too. Google tells me (via the Cornell archives) Ladouceur's injury was definitely an ankle injury during his junior year, probably during an exhibition: Not sure what Kozier's injury was, but he played almostby Tom Lento - Hockey

Trotsky Apropos I just read the following quote of an Italian coach on a USCHO soccer thread. "One night, I went to a bar, I was with a woman. We talked all night. We laughed, we flirted, I paid for several drinks of hers. At around 5:00 AM, a guy came in, grabbed her by the arm and took her to the bathroom. He made love to her and she left with him. KeithK css228 When the difference between a goal, a save, and a blocked shot is a few inches either direction, and the shooter is under pressure, the truth is that random chance is usually the determining factor at whether or not the puck gets through (some guys are better at this than others but the difference is negligible). This is clearly untrue in the extreme case (put me out there and seeby Tom Lento - Hockey

Trotsky Jim HylaThere's no way we are yet one of the top 10 programs in the country. "You are what your record says you are." We're 7th in PWR. Consider that Providence (Win) is 4th, SLU (Win) is 9th, and BU and Yale (Ties) are tied for 11th. I think we actually are one of the top 10 teams in the country. Re: CU vs Providence 12/28/15 - 8 years ago
Jim Hyla RichH The win puts Cornell at #2 in the KRACH, trailing the team they trail in the ECAC standings. #6 in the PWR, just ahead of Providence, for what it's worth (we're almost to the point where it's useful to look at it). Does anybody know how CHN and USCHO differ in their calculation of KRACH? We're 3 at USCHO. It looks like the difference might be how SOS is calculated, but then I doby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: What's going on with this year's team? - 8 years ago
ugarte css228 css228 I'm not going to lie I'm incredibly skeptical of this team. Before the BU game we looked like a good possession team, but we had only played 2 teams with decent possession stats (Yale and Q, who is ) and we went 0-1-1 in those matchups. The rest of the teams were in the bottom 3rd in both CF% and CF% close (which is a better metric by far than PWR or KRACH to compare a team).by Tom Lento - Hockey

Dafatone I've spent the last few years listening to a lot more games than I've watched, but from what I can tell, we were REALLY bad at finishing our chances the last two years. I was a huge Bardreau fan, but he was constantly getting to the doorstep and not scoring. This year, we're scoring on a lot of our chances. David Harding Robb Swampy Jim Hyla Okay, our season is over, but there is still news. The question is will anyone read this? Four lacrosse players are AAs. Towerroad CU77 First of all, Tambroni is not ever returning to Cornell. Why would he leave PSU, which will let him stay until he retires as long as the results are not truly miserable, to return to a school that has many more restrictions on recruiting, and that fired his hand-picked successor a few years later, just after he'd gotten the team to the Final Four?
