Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Cornell at Clarkson Post-game - 17 years ago
ftyuvThe problem with comparing behavior at Lynah and behavior at Cheel is that it's apples and oranges. Cornell fans are allowed to do whatever we want, because Cornell rocks, wooo. Clarkson, on the other hand, sucks. And may I suggest you do all this in an AOL chatroom, where it belongs? How's this? AOL_ChatterRIGHT ON!!!1!!! OMG LOL CORNAL 2TALY RUL3S AND CLARKSON SUX!!1111! Re: 2007 Womens Hockey - 17 years ago
Trotsky1-7 in league so far. Looks like another long year. The talent pool of blue chip women players is very small, and there are maybe a half dozen teams nationally that get all the good players, and Cornell is not one of them. OK. But what is preventing the Red from skating at least .500 team? It's a storied program -- what is keeping it pinned to the bottom of the league? ursusminorIby Tom Lento - Other Sports

Al DeFlorio2For those who are a bit more experienced with living, how would one best describe Dryden? As someone else already posted, it's hard to describe Ken in today's goaltending vernacular. This very brief video won't show you much, but it's the only one I'm aware of. I'm not sure if this has much footage of Dryden, but it might give you some idea. Re: Jersey coming to NHL too - 17 years ago
evilnaturedrobotwhy can't they just use the new wicking material and keep the loose cut and traditional designs? why must the uniform be completely redesigned for the players to benefit from modern fabric technology? In most sports, that would be enough. In the case of hockey, the traditional cut increases wind drag by up to 15% over the tapered design(if you believe the marketing buzz - I susby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Jersey - 17 years ago
evilnaturedrobot 1. Yes I realize that: Sweden won so there is no improvement in performance is a week deduction. It was late at night and I was a bit worked up so I will admit to being a bit flippant here. However, the real question is: if everybody switches to these jerseys (which is what Nike and Reebok are pushing for) then doesn't it all cancel out anyway? In the end nobody will benefiby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Jersey - 17 years ago
RichHI'm all in favor of improved performance. But until they've been around for several years, I don't see the corporate branding breaking. I booed it, but when the puck dropped, I focused more on the players. That said, to re-stress the second sentence of my post, I'd rather not ditch the tradtional jerseys. Re: Cornell 3 Maine 6 Post-Game Discussion Thread - report from estero - 17 years ago
jtwcornell91DeltaOne81jtwcornell91 We did actually have a woman in a Blades jacket come up and praise us for being "real fans" even though she roots against us every year. Did she say why? No, but I assume she supported Maine for whatever irrational reason it is all the locals use. On the Maine broadcast they interviewed a Maine alum who plays for the Everblades, so that may haveby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: BU/Dartmouth - 17 years ago
Tom LentoEdit - SLU up 1-0 on an early PPG. Go Saints! And congrats to Clarkson a pair of big wins at the Badger Showdown! Probably my last update for the night. NoDak does "a good job of getting shots on goal" and scores when a shot misses the net, rebounds off the end boards, and is slammed home by a forward hanging out in the high slot. 1-1 after 15 minutes, and NoDak looks betterby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: BU/Dartmouth - 17 years ago
EricaThe BU/Dartmouth consolation game in Hanover just happens to be on channel CN8 in the DC area. I have no idea why. I think it's SLU and NoDak in the championship but I'm not sure. The game is just starting now. It's on in the Philadelphia area, too. NoDak/SLU on right now, 0-0 early. Apparently SLU came back from 2-0 down heading into the 3rd to beat BU, 3-2, with the GWG scored on a peby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Jersey - 17 years ago
evilnaturedrobotThese are hockey sweaters, not mid 80's mets uniforms. Loose, simple with horizontal stripes please! Does no one understand that one of things that makes a jersey classic is not constantly changing it? And the idea that these jerseys increase performance is absolute bullshit. The only team not to wear the swift jerseys at Torino? Sweden, who happened to win the whole thing.by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Happy holidays (even Andy and Rich S) - 17 years ago
TrotskyThis is why eLynah rules. A seasons greetings threads morphs within 3 posts into a dicussion on tax law. Happy "Holiday of Your Choice," everybody. The solstice is at 7:22 pm ET tonight, so everybody please join me in praying that the big fire ball beats back the wraiths of darkness yet again. It will. The Hogfather lives! Re: Cornell's ice-skating treadmill - 17 years ago
Roy 82Anyone know what the plastic ice-like surface is? How often does it need to be replaced? Can it be resurfaced with heat? Since I live here in beautiful Califonia, I am wondering if you could make an entire rink out of it and how differentit would be from ice (rollerblades just aren't the same). I suspect that it is much higher friction than ice. A quick online search supports this notionby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Other Games - Saturday 12/9/06 - 17 years ago
TrotskyUnion and Q trade ppg within 18 seconds in the final 3 minutes. 3-2, QU, late. Princeton 6 RPI 2, final. I just want to point out that with this loss RPI moved to 1-2-3 in the league and 4-5-6 overall. How weird is that?by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Continuing the philosophical discussion started in the "The ushers have gone TOO far" thread... - 17 years ago
First, thanks to Kyle and Keith for illustrating the difference. I'm not convinced that the privatized government system is better - I suspect it would be more cost-effective, but knowing as much as I do about social dilemmas and how people routinely fail to solve them, I also suspect the world would become a stupid, irritating, and probably more dangerous place to live. Not nearly as stupid andby Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: 2007 Womens Hockey - 17 years ago
KeithKJosh '99TrotskyIt's a storied program...No offense to the Cornell women's program, but that's just not true.Under .500 all time record, never advanced in the ECAC tournament, very little Ivy success since the initial stretch in the 70's. Unfortunately Josh is right. Cornell is an OLD program, with a long tradition of being there. The Big Red was one of the better of the original women'sby Tom Lento - Other Sports

kroseDeltaOne81Seems like insurance is an incredibly massive industry in this world. Insurance companies would replace police, fire protection, almost all agencies like the FDA, and the military. Of course, they probably contract out most of this rather than do it in-house. Kyle, you promote anarchy, but with all your talk of insurance companies it seems like this requires an enormous bureaucrby Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Continuing the philosophical discussion started in the "The ushers have gone TOO far" thread... - 17 years ago
RichHOh, and I was one of those who, after a layoff and my COBRA benefits went away, accepted the responsibility to live without health insurance. It was either food or insurance for me. The job I found to pay the bills didn't offer benefits. Somehow, I survived that period, but accepted the risk. The big stinker was that there exists inexpensive catastrophic insurance, but it was illegal inby Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: The ushers have gone TOO far - 17 years ago
kroseThere's no difference between food, water, shelter, and health care in my opinion: they are all needs that someone must either provide for him/herself or arrange to have provided for him or her. Health care exists primarily to provide for those "oh, shit!" scenarios when either something unexpected happens or another party responsible for some health-impacting action is unable toby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Jack-booted thugs - conceding - 17 years ago
krose Note the 600 total accidental gun deaths in 2000. Homicides in 2000 come out to 15,586 on their own, and this doesn't include the hundreds of thousands of maimings, rapes (over 90,000 instances reported), muggings, and other violent crimes. I would like to point out that both of you have abused statistical data in support of your respective positions, I'll pick on Kyle because I've knownby Tom Lento - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Cornell 3 RPI 3 Post-game Thread - 17 years ago
DafatoneScrivens made an incredible glove save in the OT. Dell sucked. We scored in the 2nd period, but Alford grabbed the puck and threw it out of the net (it was barely over the line) and Dell never blew the whistle. We looked good for the second two periods. That's about it. I had a clear view of the play (sitting up in H, totally unobstructed view) and it seemed like Dell got that one rby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Alumni in the Pros -- November 2006 - goalies in NHL - 17 years ago
billhowardWonder if any Cornell goaltenders besides McKee have been to the NHL without playing in a game. For instance Dave Elenbaas '73, who spent a half-dozen years in the AHL and several years had the lowest GAA. I'm reasonably sure Jason Elliott spent some time on the Detroit bench in a similar situation. I think he was even their third goaltender during one of their Stanley Cup runs, butby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: SHG?? - 17 years ago
CowbellGuyI'm not going to dig it up in the rulebook, but it's in there somewhere. It is, in fact a SHG. If there were a delayed call on a powerplay and a goal was scored, I'm pretty sure the man in the box would not release. There would be no additional 2 minute penalty to follow, but I'm thinking it would be a power play goal, and yes, I think it could theoretically be possible to get 2 PP goalby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: SHG?? - 17 years ago
Jim Hyla Think of the converse -- Cornell is on powerplay, the Harvard goalie throws his stick to block the puck, Cornell scores on the ensuing penalty shot. Is that a "power play goal"I'd buy that. But it shouldn't be a PPG. If it counts as a PPG, then the skater in the box will be released if the penalty shot results in a goal, thus ending the penalty. The rulebook says that theby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: RinkAtlas - 17 years ago
It even has The Rink out on East Shore Drive in Lansing (listed as Ithaca, but meh), and it's got Cass Park. That's just crazy. And now I have a map to a nearby rink. If only my skates weren't (still) in the sharpening room at Lynah. . . I should really get those. . .by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Cheel - 17 years ago
Rich S Anything that would replace Lynah would feel antiseptic too. In Clarkson's case, they HAD to replace Walker, not just to help recruiting but also because it had become prohibitively expensive to maintain anmong other reasons. Of notable mention also is that all the money to construct Cheel Campus Center, which also contains the Student Center, for those who have not been there, cameby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Princeton roll call - 17 years ago
Josh '99Rich SHaving made the trip many times, Route 1 can be as big a bottleneck on a Friday night. Saturday is a different story. Are you talking about Route 1 near NYC (which I'd definitely avoid) or Route 1 heading into Princeton (which is tougher to plan around)? He's talking about Route 1 through Princeton. All else equal, the fastest way to get there is to take the NJ Turnpike to Exitby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Butt-Ending! (and the box score is up) - 17 years ago
I feel bad for Brown's Todd Johnson, who spent 12 minutes in the penalty box and didn't commit a penalty in the game (he served two of the three Brown majors and the Brown too many men on the ice).by Tom Lento - Hockey
