Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: RPI and Union - 16 years ago
lynah80I think the Big Red will collect at least 3 points next weekend with at least a tie at RPI and a win at Union. Someone obviously hasn't paid any attention to Cornell's history against Union.by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: RPI over Miami - for 20 minutes - 16 years ago
ursusminorThe RPI release stated that it will be shown on a tape-delay basis on the Syracuse and Rochester Time Warner Channels: . RPI seems to play well against top teams this year until the other teams adjust between periods. Hopefully these games and the CC and UMass or Notre Dame games in Tampa should prepare the team for the ECAC grind. Watch out next season. Another killer OOC schedulby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Alumni in the Pros - Leneveu - 16 years ago
nyiballsIt's a tough prospect getting into and stayin in the NHL as a goaltender. There are only 60 spots for the entire world to fill. No argument with that, but I don't think LeNeveu is out based on age or past performance at this point. He's done well enough in the AHL, and played well in some of his 21 NHL games (although he was awful in some of them). His NHL time seems more like a few cuby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Alumni in the Pros - Leneveu - 16 years ago
scoop85nyiballsHate to say it, but I think Lenny's days as a bonafide NHL prospect are over. I don't think any team is going to pick up on an aging career AHLer who hasn't shown once that he can handle the NHL game, even given many opportunities. I think that's a bit premature. Look how Tim Thomas has flourished after years of seemingly going nowhere. When Ryan Miller was 25 he was just getby Tom Lento - Hockey

ursusminoramerks127Don't forget that according to the commentators, Matt Devin plays for us. Perhaps they would have found the correct Devins if they had used a devining rod. Age, can we revoke ursusminor's posting privileges until further notice?by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: BU Postgame - 16 years ago
DrewithacatDrewEDIT: It was always my contention McKee benefitted from an outstanding D-corps. Are there goalies that haven't? Ok let me rephrase, would scrivens and davenport be more successful if they had the same defense that McKee had in front of him? That is why I asked if the goalies were only a symptom to the problem, the real problem being the defense. I can't comment about this yby Tom Lento - Hockey
4 point road weekend for Women's Hockey - 16 years ago
Cornell edged the Lady Deer Ticks 4-3 on Saturday, after beating No. 10 Princeton 7-4 on Friday night. Cornell was down 3-0 to the Tigers in the second period before scoring 4 goals in the final 6:23 of the second and adding two more in the third before Princeton could respond. Rebecca Johnston scored Cornell's seventh goal to give the Big Red some more breathing room with a little over ten miby Tom Lento - Other Sports

ugarteYou should also check with the Cornell Clubs around the area. They may not be sold out. PM me if you want the contact person at the Cornell Club of NYC (I don't want to publicly post her name/direct dial). If you call and she says that she is sold out, either tell me or post it to the board so that she doesn't keep getting calls from Forum readers. Cornell Club of NYC is sold out. Re: Cornell 1 at Yale 0 (2nd intermission) - 16 years ago
RichHActually...thanks, Tom. I've missed your women's team updates. Johnston is definitely a key player. Well, I'm glad someone likes them. I missed the Brown game, which is too bad since it seems Cornell pulled out a point with a last second PPG. Brown's struggling early this year, and may have a tough time making the playoffs. Historically, Brown's had an excellent team under Cornell alum Dby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Cornell 1 at Yale 0 (2nd intermission) - 16 years ago
TrotskyCornell women leading Yale 2-0 after 2. Sounds like they may have improved this year. Cornell's women's team is much improved over 3 years ago. I can't really compare them to more recent squads, since I haven't been to a women's game in 2-3 years. Improvement or not, Yale was a much better team, and it showed - Yale got 4 goals in about a 10 minute span in the third plus an empty netby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: RIT tix - 16 years ago
dietlbomb It's a nice 90-minute drive up the lakes in the fall (and is a shorter trip than it is to go to Colgate). Rt. 96 -> Thruway -> I490 is pretty quick. I'd take route 89 -> Thruway -> I490 instead. There's less traffic and no small towns to slow you down. That, and 96 is under construction, so those who don't believe that 89 is faster (I think it is - and it's certainlyby Tom Lento - Hockey

RichH Quick! Where's the first KRACH calculation?? I demand a chart. SLU (Infinity) >>> Everyone Else (100) >>> Clarkson (0) (I probably didn't get that right, but hey - it's kind of like a chart. And doesn't it make you feel all warm and fuzzy to know that Everyone Else is Much Greater Than Clarkson?)by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: TSN Ranks Riley Nash #33 for the upcoming draft - 16 years ago
Robb To rate the leagues' ability to develop players, you'd have to do something like: ignore the 1st and 2nd round picks - those guys are probably going to make the dance regardless. I think it was DILLIGAF who said that first round picks aren't long-term projects, which I thought was a stretch at best. This comment is along the same lines, and I don't buy it either, although I do agree withby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: TSN Ranks Riley Nash #33 for the upcoming draft - 16 years ago
DILLIGAFIf he goes that high the pressure for him to play major junior instead of cornell will be huge. Not necessarily - I think that largely depends on the team that drafts him, how far down the depth chart he is, what they want him to work on, and whether or not they offer him a contract of some kind to jump ship - but if he goes that high, plays well, and stays healthy, it's all but guarantby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
Jacob '06 Or they certainly believed there was a good chance. We were actively recruiting goalies to replace him during that recruiting season. Isn't that pretty normal regardless of the odds of losing your junior goaltender to the pros? I think coaches generally like to bring in a freshman goaltender while the established starter is a senior, so the freshman gets a chance to adjust to the collby Tom Lento - Hockey

RichHAnd lets not forget that the Cornell Ultimate team has been one of the more successful club teams on a national level for years. They occassionally make the national finals, IIRC. The last time the Buds made the finals was in either 91 or 92, where they eventually lost to Oregon. One of the guys on my club team is a fellow Cornell alum who played in that game. Re: WHY CORNELL WILL NO LONGER DOMINATE THE ECAC - 17 years ago
bandrews37 Anyway, regarding Schafer... I'll agree four titles in 12 years is pretty good. His playoff record, though, is inflated over coaches in the past because of the format of the postseason. In the old days, you had to only win three games - that changed to six in Schafer's early years, then to as few again as four now. Also, the NCAA tournament was smaller back in the day. Is he probably oby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: WHY CORNELL WILL NO LONGER DOMINATE THE ECAC - 17 years ago
I'm not 100% convinced that Schafer is changing Cornell's style of play, which is what everyone seems to believe is happening. I see him changing his recruiting style, and I believe that if necessary he'll shift Cornell's style of play. It's not actually necessary yet. The style of play that made Cornell successful was a style ideally suited to the big, physical players that Cornell brought inby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: HARVARD SUCKS - 17 years ago
kroseoceanst41The same is true of the Big Johnson: from the outside, it's hideous, but from the inside, it gives some of the best views of Ithaca, Cornell, and Cayuga Lake. The Johnson Museum is hideous from the outside if you're close to it. From downtown, it's pretty amazing. Re: Retired Number - 17 years ago
KeithKI think it's pretty clear why Nieuwendyk is getting a retired number when other guys have not. Joe finished his Hall of Fame caliber hockey career at a time when retiring numbers is very much in vogue. Dryden retired at a time when it much less common and probably was unheard of in college athletics. Another possible reason: Have Dryden et al volunteered their time to help the team dby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Post Game! - 17 years ago
RobbIsn't hitting from behind an automatic major these days? The ref definitely made the hitting from behind signal, and as soon as he does that, it's 5 (I think). Sort of. It's possible to get hitting from behind as a minor penalty, but according to the rulebook hitting from behind into the side boards or end boards is a flagrant violation and results in a major penalty. Re: Cornell at Colgate postgame - 17 years ago
sah67Just a strategy question for the players/coaches out there: when Bitz took the dumb penalty with Scrivens pulled, is it normal to leave the goalie pulled even though the attackers are 5x5 (or 4x4 in tonight's case). In other words, is it better to be down an attacker and push hard for a SHG, but have a goalie in there to prevent an ENG, or is it more effective to leave the goalie pulled andby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Colgate postgame - 17 years ago
evilnaturedrobotthe thing is that Davenport's looked shakey more times than not when he's come out of the net all year. Sooner or later somthing bad was going to happen, maybe this convinces him to stay within the pipes. Unless your a Brodeur, Turco, or Dipietroesque puck handler, you really can't be coming out of the net with two forecheckers in the near vicinity and your team down a man.by Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Jersey - 17 years ago
KeithKAnyone who thinks the new jerseys are going to make any significant difference in on ice performance is kidding himself. Maybe there is a 9% decrease in drag under certain conditions. That does not translate into a 9% increase in speed. I'm talking out of my rear end here, but I feel like it's more likely to result in roughly the same speed with less work, or slightly faster speeds withby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Richards's pile of ice - 17 years ago
DeltaOne81I'm not so sure its incorrect. It might not be in the rules, but that doesn't mean its not what actually happened. Obviously I'm not privy to what was going on in Feola's head, but from where I was sitting, that's not what actually happened. Based on the end of the play, the only two outcomes which could be correct under the rules were 1) Cornell goal or 2) Cornell with the option toby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: Richards's pile of ice - 17 years ago
sah67From the Ithaca Journal re: Romano's penalty shot: "While Feola was doing his mulling, Richards was constructing a mound of ice shavings in front of his goal in an effort to slow down Romano's upcoming penalty shot. The Big Red's Mark McCutcheon then skated over and flipped the ice shavings away, to the roar of the crowd." I totally missed this, but did glance over when Richardby Tom Lento - Hockey
Re: All Access complaints - 17 years ago
jtwcornell91ebilmesWould this be the place to bring up Mac compatibility / being able to purchase All-Access with a Canadian credit card? Preferably if you phrase it in such a way that doesn't imply that all they have to do to fix the problem is make the feed viewable on IE for Mac. Yikes. That'd be a disaster for Mac users, too.
