Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
TrotskyI'd rather have Romano than Milo. I don't agree. Romano may be the flashier player but Milo contributes in all areas. Romano was a top notch offensive player at the college level but he didn't think the game well at all. Milo may not have put up the numbers this year, but his superior hockey sense was evident. Players like Milo win you championships. Players like Romano win scorinby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
redreduxIf it wasn't Milo's choice not to be on the team anymore, then he comes back only if he wants to and Schafer reverses course on a recent decision -- seems unlikely. Given Milo's success on the diamond, it's also unlikely he's going to decide now to give that up. The trend of players leaving early or not being asked back for whatever reason is a bit disturbing. I'd expect it if we wereby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
The idea behind him coming to Cornell was to round out his game and 'get him ready for the NHL.' Whether he has NHL talent is debatable IMO. There are a ton of smallish players with big time ability in Europe who play very similar hockey to Romano and never come close to the NHL. Some do make it obviously so I'm not saying Romano won't but going to London is not necessarily going to separate hby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Ryan O'Byrne Wins Calder Cup - 16 years ago
Markov resigned recently but I doubt that Souray will be back. Someone is going to pay Souray 6M to be a -20 defenseman with a booming shot and it isn't going to be Montreal after what they gave Markov. Plus Rivet moving out at the deadline and Niinimaa not likely to be back, I think there will be an opening for sure even if they sign one or two UFA's.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
ftyuvI mean, he was a freshman. A talented one, it sounds like, but you can't expect the frosh to come in and play both sides of the ice perfectly every night. There's a difference between making freshman mistakes in the defensive zone and being completely inept in the defensive zone. The good news for Romano is that he won't need to commit to defensive zone hockey in London - they play aby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
It was not Milo's choice to not be on the team anymore. Losing Romano will hurt but I don't think it'll be the difference in Cornell being good or not next season. When he was on, he was a spectacular offensive player with significant issues on the other side of the ice. When he was off, he contributed nothing.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Romano will not be back next year - 16 years ago
He'll be playing with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League alongside the probable #1 overall pick at the draft Patrick Kane (from Buffalo) and another definite top 10 pick, Sam Gagner. Maybe Milo will be back on the team now. Or they'll get someone else but it's pretty late. Regardless, 14 forwards isn't enough IMO.by calgARI '07 - Hockey

Graduation Day Reflections - 16 years ago
This is my final "column." Have appreciated the feedback over the last four years. As BillHoward said to me recently, "Now you get to join the long line of Cornell fans-now-alumni who thought one of the four years would include that magical NCAA trophy." I'm sure most if not all of you share in my sentiments. Pardon the delay, but it often takes time to properly reflecby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Milo - 17 years ago
ugarte Did he transfer somewhere else to play or settle for the academic life at Cornell? Stayed at Cornell, played club hockey, and will be graduating this weekend I think.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Milo - 17 years ago
Townie It's also very possible that he just didn't fit in personality-wise. Like Mike Stachurski a few years back, a tough, hard-nosed d-man who just couldn't blend with the team culture and personalities. At least that's what he told me..... Although the personality thing is true, Stachurski flat out just wasn't good enough. For some reason, the coaches brought him in after never seeingby calgARI '07 - Hockey

Re: OT: How to choose the team captain - 17 years ago
DILLIGAFThe captains should be Sawada, Seminoff and Greening. I like these choices though I'd probably include Scott in there as well.by calgARI '07 - Hockey

MINIteam8sFrom the same article - "(Senior Brendan) Byrne (was) unable to attend (the annual awards banquet) due to games for the Harvard baseball team" For the same reason, Milo was not at the Cornell thing.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: CHA Banquet - 17 years ago
How Seminoff didn't get an award is truly remarkable. He played in the playoffs with MONO. If that isn't worthy of "ironman" status, I don't know what is. I would have Seminoff as captain next year with Sawada and Scot as assistants. It'll probably be Scott as captain with Sawada and Krantz as assistants though. Outside shots for Kennedy over Sawada and Seminoff over Krantz.by calgARI '07 - Hockey

Re: Two more recruits. - 17 years ago
The WOHL is a Junior B league but Roezler's numbers are pretty exceptional and not all that different from what Moulson put up his last year in Junior B. The comparisons probably end there as they play different positions and Moulson is six inches taller but the numbers are impressive.by calgARI '07 - Hockey

Re: Alumni in the Pros - April 2007 - 17 years ago
FWIW, Ron Fournier said on a Montreal radio yesterday that Ryan O'Byrne is expected to compete for a roster spot in Montreal next season. Gainey plans on letting a lot of his veteran Dmen walk and giving some of the younger guys like O'Byrne an opportunity. This is all according to Fournier.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: TJ Galiardi - 17 years ago
Beeeej That he has hired an agent, I believe, prevents him from returning even if he doesn't get drafted. Or am I misunderstanding the rules? Probably just the "family advisor." USHR is pretty informal with their language and just cited him as his "agent." Many hockey players have "family advisors" from their early teens on. Pat Brisson, for example, became Cby calgARI '07 - Hockey

TrotskyithacatDartmouth loses Galiardi -- academics, according to USHR.Permanant drop or semester suspension? The article sure doesn't make it sound like he'll be returning to Dartmouth. His agent says that they'll see who drafts him this summer and take whatever path the organization chooses, whether it be the AHL or CHL.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Riley Nash commits to Cornell - 17 years ago
Roy 82 I am guessing that Riley, who according to the report, sided with management in the lockout, will not be joining the ILR school. Well Bettman speaks for the owners and he want to ILR. I go to ILR and certainly side with the owners.by calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Two more recruits. - 17 years ago
That makes 14 forwards and 8 defensemen (if Johnston is in their plans) for next season. I assume there is still one more forward coming and possibly still one more defenseman.by calgARI '07 - Hockey

Re: Riley Nash commits to Cornell - 17 years ago
evilnaturedrobotreally? I'd heard that he was primarily a center, I guess that's not true. Shame really, this team is awash in wingers, But with the exception of Topher, I don't see much in the way of skilled centermen. I would say Gallagher has exceptional upside and in some ways is more dynamic than Scott. The last month of the season, Gallagher was the team's best offensive player after Gby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Riley Nash commits to Cornell - 17 years ago
evilnaturedrobot you meen you're not? I couldn't resist the temptation to do so as I walked to class this morning. Right now I've got Nash taking Bitz's place between Sawada and Greening, though I think it might be a good idea to put someone more skilled on his left wing. Milo? Gallagher? It would be tempting to put Romano there, but I think Tony would be best suited on a line where he is tby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Riley Nash commits to Cornell - 17 years ago
redhair34 I was told that although the CSB midterm rankings are released sometime around the first of the year, they are pretty much put together in November. Riley's stock has risen significantly since then. So, I expect when the final rankings come out he will be better than 99th. Even though Turris is ranked very high, highly-regarded players from Junior A don't usually get high rankingsby calgARI '07 - Hockey
Re: Riley Nash commits to Cornell - 17 years ago
I think it is very realistic to expect Nash to go in the first round which will pretty much seal his fate as being at Cornell for no more than two years. As was mentioned, his stock has skyrocketed since the mid-term rankings came out which makes it all the more surprising that he didn't go the WHL route as many had speculated. I think that the worst case scenario for Nash based on what I kby calgARI '07 - Hockey
