Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
Hmmm... now if Dadswell had stayed for another year... (?!) (I still think Paul was "robbed" (in '87) when the NCAA gave 1st-team/G.O.T.Y. ("Kelly award"??) to that Maryland guy (my guesses: regional bias, Maryland bias, the Terrapins were ranked #1 throughout the season (Cornell was #2), the Beardmore name, the T(w)erp was a senior & Paul was only a sophomore... ???))by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
> ...Cornell in '67 and '68: Butch Hilliard in lacrosse and Ken Dryden in hockey... That was my initial reaction, too -- and it may just hold up. As far as Cornell is concerned, while we had some awesome lacrosse goalies (Rule, Mackesey, Schimoler) in the '70's & '80's, we didn't have the corresponding hockey goaltending during the same years (perhaps Rule/Cropper in '71??). Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
, indeed! Adding that newest autobid before expanding to 16 teams is just plain sick! Heh-heh... good 'ol Swami... I "see" that he's still got the <ahem!> "cool tunes" to entertain us whilst we browse his admittedly impressive site! (He's got us ranked #7! Wow! (Cornell's "official" ranking is #15.) And 6 of 10 "experts" on the site are prediby zg88 - Hockey
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
What a big game with which to open the season! Barring a 2000-style, "miraculous" upset of Syracuse (or a follow-through on last year's scare of Princeton), this pseudo-neutral-site clash with Georgetown will be the Big Red's only realistic shot at bagging a "W" over a Top-10 team this (regular) season. If we miss this opportunity to prove that we can play with the "bigby zg88 - Hockey
eLF is ONE MONTH OLD!!! - 22 years ago
CONGRATS, Age! With nearly 25,000 visitors and over 3,000 posts in its first month, I'd have to say that this forum has been a smashing success! With the long (but fun!) hours of reading necessary to keep current here, it sure seems like it's been a lot more than just one month! Thanks for the constant upgrades, tweakings, and refinements -- it just keeps getting better and better! Let'sby zg88 - Hockey
Re: polls 2/25/02 - 22 years ago
A sign of the apocalypse: Brown & Dartmouth got votes, Clarkson didn't... (P.S. -- It appears that, miraculously, we're still in a tie (5-way?) for 1st in the nation in "fewest overall losses", with 6).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: joe nieuwendyk - 22 years ago
But, man, ya gotta wonder... what if he HAD stayed?!?! The team went 11-16 during his final year, but the following year (with a new coach and an infusion of talent) they went 19-9. Add a returning Joey, and... well, ya never know... But, at least he went out with a bang: He had back-to-back hat tricks on the final weekend of the '87 season (including a goal on a penalty shot). That was swby zg88 - Hockey
Re: Everything But Anchovies - 22 years ago
WARNING: Skip this post if you don't give a crap about the history of the drinking age in New York. (Yes, when I'm in procrastinatory mode, you all suffer!) ) OK, Eric... I feel a bet comin' on... (Man, I never would've guessed, at the time (16 years ago), that I'd someday be having one of these "geezers-in-rocking-chairs" arguments (especially in a hockey forum (hell, therby zg88 - Hockey

> ...I think there is a rule that they have to drop the puck within 20 seconds of a stoppage. I heard it was only 15 seconds. I love it. Now if they'd only apply it to ALL sports -- especially baseball... heh-heh... BTW, I seem to remember Niewy getting caught by the 15(?)-second rule. It was during one of the earlier(?) games, and he failed to make it to the face-off circle in time. Theby zg88 - Hockey
Re: The Great One's Great Mistake - 22 years ago
Well, that just shows how much I pay attention to the groups 'n' brackets 'n' such. (Hell, I don't even have the schedule of games -- I just toon in and see what's on!)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: The Great One's Great Mistake - 22 years ago
Very well said, Eric! I'm with you almost 100%. My only difference is that I'd rather see U.S.-Russia for the gold, instead of U.S.-Finland (just as, I'm sure, everyone in '80 had wished that the victory over the Russians would've been for the gold).by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Everything But Anchovies - 22 years ago
Here I go again, chiming in with pointless statistics... (But first, I want to say that I've been trying to get caught up on this forum for over an hour-and-a-half now... this is insane!!) > ...the drinking age went from 18 to 20 in 1983, and then 21 in 1984... I know that just about no one's going to care, but, just for the record: The drinking age went from 18 to 19 in late '82,by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Vermont, Feb 16 - 22 years ago
A wild guess... Perhaps the team was upset that (on top of the loss to Dartmouth, of course), after building a 5-0 lead by the middle of the game, they "lost the 2nd half", 2-0. (???)by zg88 - Hockey
Re: Perspective (stats) - 22 years ago
I totally agree, littleredfan. The main purpose of my big, stat-laden post (above) was a selfish need for therapy following the loss. I am "hard-wired" (from the "good old days"?) to look upon Dartmouth as a "perennial ECAC doormat". Dammit, that's just where they belong! (Along with Brown and Union! So there!! What's happening to my world?!?) I have sharedby zg88 - Hockey
Re: Perspective (stats) - 22 years ago
On the whole, despite the loss, there is more positive news than negative -- on the statistical front: BAD: -- The longest-in-17-yrs. 8-game win streak has been ended. -- ...by Dartmouth! ...in a shut out!! -- Team Offense has plummeted to #20 in the nation. -- The power play unit continues to be unproductive. > ...Cornell has a 2-2-0 record against MIT, and the two teams haven't met since '59. I found that to be a disturbing piece of info., so I peeked into my ratty old media guide. I have the Cornell-MIT series as a slightly-more-palatable 3-2-1, with the last loss (3-5) coming during the infamous '40 season. Age -- hope the guts are better! (Cute smiley ("barfey"?)). Amazing: roughly 1,500 posts in the first 15 days of this forum (that's about 100 posts per day for you English majors) -- no wonder it's so tough to keep up!by zg88 - Hockey

> ...only one player -Sam Paolini tied for 6th- in the top fifteen league goal scorers It's slightly better than that: Paolini is tied for 5th, and Vesce's tied for 10th (with Mark McRae & Murray both supposedly tied for 16th -- although it seems that USCHO may be cheating McRae out of an assist (??) (so he may actually be tied for 15th, instead)). In any case, there are 4 Cornelliansby zg88 - Hockey
